To reduce copyright claims on a YouTube gaming VOD, check the game publisher’s current streaming and music rules, disable or control licensed in-game music, and use outside music only when its license covers the livestream and the archived public video. If licensed content may match Content ID, ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel before you go live. A clean broadcast does not guarantee a clean archive: YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches, and claims on archived live streams can be made after the stream ends.
Why a livestream can be interrupted or its VOD claimed
Live checks and archived-video claims happen at different times
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you; if the matched content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Separately, YouTube says Content ID claims on a live stream’s archived video are made after the stream ends if you choose to archive it. A broadcast that finished without interruption may therefore still receive a claim on its VOD. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
A license may not prevent a live interruption by itself
If you have licensed third-party content, YouTube advises asking the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Without that operational step, a live stream can still be interrupted—even if you have restricted the stream to territories where you hold the necessary rights. Before you go live: a copyright-risk checklist
- Identify the exact game. Check the publisher’s current creator, streaming, and music guidance for that title. YouTube’s general policies do not grant permission to stream every game or its soundtrack.
- Review the game’s audio settings and documentation. Use streamer mode, radio controls, or separate licensed-music toggles when the game provides them. Do not assume streamer mode removes every restricted sound or that a soundtrack is cleared for public VODs.
- Keep unlicensed outside music out. A license needs to cover the actual uses involved: livestreaming, an archived public VOD, the platform, relevant territories, and monetization if you plan to monetize.
- Request Content ID allowlisting when needed. If licensed third-party material may match Content ID, ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel before the stream. Save the license and written confirmation.
- Check the archive after the stream. If a claim appears, inspect the claimant, matched segment, timestamps, and territories in YouTube Studio before choosing what to do. An unfamiliar claimant alone does not prove a claim is invalid.
What to do if YouTube claims your gaming VOD
Inspect the claim before editing or disputing
Review the claimed material and the policy shown in YouTube Studio. Depending on the claim, it may block, monetize, or track the video, and policies can vary by geography. A Content ID claim typically is not itself a copyright strike; an active livestream removed for copyright can result in a strike and a seven-day livestream restriction. Choose a remedy that matches the situation
- Leave the claim in place if you accept its effect on the video.
- Remove the matched material using the available Studio editing option: trim the claimed segment, erase claimed audio, or replace it with audio from the YouTube Audio Library.
- Dispute only when you have a valid basis, such as the necessary rights, an applicable copyright exception, or a mistaken match. The claimant is notified and has 30 days to respond. YouTube does not mediate copyright disputes.
Giving credit, buying a copy, or choosing not to monetize does not by itself give you permission or provide a valid reason to dispute a claim. An unsuccessful dispute can prompt the rights owner to seek removal; a valid copyright removal request can result in a strike. Preserve what you need before saving edits
Make a copy or preserve any material you need for records before saving changes in YouTube Studio. Since June 2025, saved changes in YouTube Studio Editor cannot be reverted. YouTube Help: Edit your video settings.

Game soundtrack rules are not the same as Content ID reference rules
YouTube’s Content Manager guidance about gameplay and original game soundtrack references concerns who can submit reference material to Content ID. It does not establish universal permission for creators to livestream every game or keep every soundtrack in an archived VOD. Confirm permissions with the relevant publisher and, for licensed music, the rights owner. Compare terms for live use, public archives, monetization, territories, Content ID expectations, allowlisting, duration, and revocation.
