The most reliable way to share old WordPress posts automatically is to use a tool that explicitly supports evergreen-content recycling, not just automatic sharing of newly published posts. Connect your social accounts, define which posts are eligible, set a cautious interval, vary the copy where possible, and review the queue and logs before letting the workflow run unattended.

Old-post recycling is different from sharing new posts

WordPress-to-social integrations often perform one of two distinct jobs:

  • New-post queueing: a newly published article is added to a social queue. Buffer describes this function in its WordPress integration.
  • Old-post recycling: previously published, eligible articles are selected repeatedly according to age, taxonomy and scheduling rules. Revive Social documents recurring sharing in its documentation, while Evergreen Content Poster describes an evergreen workflow that can work with Buffer.

Installing a new-post integration alone will not normally create a recurring archive-reposting system. Choose a product whose documentation explicitly mentions old posts, evergreen content, recurring reposts or bulk reposting.

Choose a workflow that matches your needs

Approach What it is suited for Controls to verify
Revive Social WordPress-centered recurring sharing of eligible older posts. Supported networks and account types, taxonomy filters, maximum age, repeat behavior, message formatting, exclusions, logs and current plan boundaries. See the product documentation and settings reference.
Social Post Flow Bulk publishing of old posts plus recurring repost rules. Minimum age, repost interval, post types, repost status and the per-post opt-out. The current WordPress.org listing is the authority for availability: Social Post Flow.
Evergreen Content Poster with Buffer A separated workflow in which an old-content plugin handles recycling and Buffer handles the social queue. Message variations, UTM tagging, account types, queue visibility and compatibility. Do not treat Buffer’s WordPress integration as proof that Buffer independently recycles old posts; its page documents newly published posts entering a queue. See Evergreen Content Poster and Buffer’s integration page.

Before choosing, compare old-post support, supported networks and account types, age and category/tag filters, per-post exclusions, bulk actions, message variation, queue visibility, logs, analytics or UTM support, and current pricing or plan limits. Those details change, so confirm them in the current product interface and documentation.

Set up automatic sharing step by step

  1. Back up and audit your archive. Make sure the site and its content database can be restored. Mark posts that contain expired offers, event dates, discontinued products or obsolete instructions.
  2. Install an old-content tool. Select a plugin or connected service that states it can recycle existing posts. Product screens differ; use the current setup guide for the exact installation path.
  3. Connect each social account. Authorize only the pages, profiles or other account types you intend to use. Network rules and API access can change. For example, Revive Social’s documentation says that, as of April 22, 2024, third-party apps could no longer access Facebook Groups and its integration shared to Pages rather than Groups; verify the current Facebook policy and plugin behavior before relying on that distinction.
  4. Restrict the eligible content. Select post types and use categories or tags as allowlists or exclusions. Revive Social documents taxonomy filters with an exclude mode. Social Post Flow documents selecting post types and assigning repost statuses.
  5. Set an age window. Define a minimum age so a new article is not immediately recycled, and a maximum age when the tool supports one. An age rule is a content-safety control as well as a scheduling setting.
  6. Choose a conservative cadence. Start with a low frequency appropriate to your archive and audience. A timer cannot publish anything if no post matches the filters, and an aggressive interval can make the same article appear repetitive.
  7. Write varied social copy. Use different introductions, angles or calls to action when the tool supports multiple messages. Keep the wording accurate to the article and avoid implying that an old fact is current.
  8. Exclude individual posts. Use the per-post opt-out where available. Social Post Flow lists a “Do NOT Post to Social Post Flow” option; comparable exclusion controls are documented for Revive Social.
  9. Review the eligible pool and queue. Confirm that the posts you expect to see are actually selected, that links resolve, and that the message fits each network’s limits. Inspect queue entries and sharing logs after saving settings.
  10. Run a controlled test. Let one scheduled item publish, confirm the destination account and link, then check the log before increasing frequency or adding more taxonomies.

Apply an editorial safety check before recycling

Automation can repeat a technically valid post whose advice is no longer valid. Review every candidate—or maintain a clearly managed evergreen category—for:

  • Prices, discounts, free-trial terms and product availability.
  • Event dates, deadlines, opening hours and seasonal references.
  • Software interfaces, commands, compatibility statements and security guidance.
  • Company names, ownership, legal requirements and other time-sensitive claims.
  • Links, images, downloads and embedded media that may have moved or expired.

Exclude a post until it is updated when any of these elements could mislead readers. A recurring scheduler should enforce your editorial policy, not replace it.

Why nothing is posting: troubleshoot in this order

1. Confirm that an eligible post exists

Start with the content pool, not the timer. Revive Social states: “Revive Social only queues posts that match your sharing filters from Revive Social > Dashboard > General Settings.” If the selected post type, category, tag or age window matches nothing, a correct schedule still produces no share. Check the filters and temporarily broaden them with one known-safe post.

2. Check the age and taxonomy rules

A minimum age may exclude newer articles, while a maximum age may exclude older ones. An exclusion taxonomy or per-post opt-out can also remove the only matching item. Review each rule together rather than changing the interval first.

3. Inspect the queue and logs

If eligible posts exist, verify that they were queued, that the intended account is connected, and that the log records an attempt or an API error. Reauthorize an account only after checking whether the destination account type is supported.

4. Check WordPress background processing

When items remain queued without being sent, inspect WordPress Cron and, where the plugin uses it, Action Scheduler. Revive Social’s troubleshooting guide covers these checks in How to fix Revive Social not posting. Hosting cron restrictions, paused scheduled events or failed background jobs can prevent an otherwise valid queue from running.

A practical decision checklist

  • Need a WordPress-first recurring system? Start by evaluating Revive Social’s filters, account support and current plan limits.
  • Need to seed a backlog and then repeat posts with explicit rules? Examine Social Post Flow’s bulk and recurring controls.
  • Already manage social publishing in Buffer? Pair it with an old-content tool only when that tool documents the recycling workflow and the connected account types you need.
  • Need reporting? Confirm whether analytics or UTM tagging is built in, supported by the connected service, or absent.
  • Need strict editorial control? Prioritize per-post exclusions, taxonomy allowlists and a visible queue over a fully hands-off schedule.

An automatic old-post program works best as a small, supervised publishing system: a narrow eligible pool, varied copy, a measured cadence and routine review of what actually went out.
