Snagit has two different “automatic save” outcomes: keeping every capture in the Snagit Library, or sending each capture to a normal image file such as PNG or JPEG. On Windows, leave Automatically save new image captures in the Library enabled under Edit > Editor Preferences > Library for automatic Library retention. For automatic file output, create a capture preset that uses File in the Share section, choose the extension and filename, and reuse that preset. The exact menus and storage locations vary by Snagit release and operating system.

Decide what “automatically save” should do

A capture can be retained inside Snagit for later editing, or exported as a standalone file that other applications can open. Those are separate workflows, so choose the one that matches what you need.

Goal Snagit workflow What you get
Keep captures available in Snagit Leave automatic Library saving enabled Captures remain organized and editable in the Snagit Library
Create PNG, JPEG, WebP or another standard file Use File output in a capture preset A file in the extension and location selected in the preset
Choose a location and format one capture at a time Turn off automatic Library saving and save manually Manual control over each capture’s destination and format

TechSmith’s current Windows instructions describe the first preference and the File-output preset in How to Default to a File Type Other Than SNAGX. The support article was updated August 19, 2025; labels can differ in another release.

Keep every capture automatically in the Snagit Library (Windows)

If your priority is not losing captures and being able to find them in Snagit later, use the Library workflow.

  1. Open Snagit Editor.
  2. Choose Edit > Editor Preferences.
  3. Open the Library tab.
  4. Make sure Automatically save new image captures in the Library is checked.
  5. Close the preferences window and make a test capture.

A checked box keeps new image captures in the Library automatically. Unchecking it does the opposite: Snagit stops placing new image captures in the Library automatically, allowing you to choose a format and location yourself. It is not a setting that improves automatic Library retention.

After testing, open the Library and confirm that the new item appears. If it does not, check whether the capture was sent to another Share destination or whether the preference was changed in a different Snagit installation.

Save captures directly as a standard image file

Use a capture preset when you repeatedly need a file rather than an item retained only for Snagit use. A preset stores the capture settings and the File-output choice so you can reuse the same setup.

  1. Open Snagit Capture.
  2. Set the capture type and other options you want to reuse.
  3. In the Share section, select File.
  4. Open the File gear control.
  5. Choose the standard file extension you need, such as PNG or JPEG, and optionally specify a filename.
  6. Save the configured setup as a capture preset.
  7. Use that preset for later captures and verify the first result in the selected location.

This gives you repeatable direct-to-file output, but it should not be described as completely unattended in every configuration. TechSmith notes that when Preview in the Editor is enabled, the capture opens in the Editor and you must click Finish to finalize the file in the selected format.

Handle the Editor preview and Finish step

The preview setting determines whether a capture pauses in Snagit Editor before the File share completes.

  • Preview enabled: the capture opens in Editor; click Finish to complete the configured File output.
  • Preview disabled: the capture can follow the preset’s output path without that Editor review step, subject to the options in your release.

Make one test capture after creating or changing a preset. Confirm both the extension and the destination before using it for a large series of captures. The support instructions establish the Finish requirement when preview is enabled, but do not promise that every preset combination runs without any user action.

Windows, macOS and version differences

Current Windows preference path

The located current Windows path is Edit > Editor Preferences > Library. If your menus do not match, check the help for your installed Snagit release rather than applying an older path blindly.

Snagit 2022 and later Library folders

For Snagit 2022 and later, TechSmith’s transfer guidance describes copying the Library folder and then selecting that folder from Editor Preferences on the new installation. Follow the displayed folder location in your installation before copying anything. See Move Unsaved Captures to a Different Computer; Back-up & Restore Library in Snagit.

macOS Library locations

TechSmith says Snagit 2022 or newer on Mac defaults the Library to ~/Pictures/Snagit. Snagit 2021 and earlier used ~/Pictures/Snagit/Autosaved Captures or ~/Documents/Snagit/Autosaved Captures. Check the actual location under Snagit > Settings > Advanced before backing up or moving files. These paths come from TechSmith’s Apple-computer transfer guide, not from a complete current macOS guide to the automatic-save preference: Moving Your Snagit Library to Another Apple Computer.

Legacy Snagit 2021 and earlier terminology

For Snagit 2021 and earlier, TechSmith distinguishes an “unsaved capture” from a “saved capture.” An unsaved capture is already visible in the Library and is stored as a .SNAG file in the Datastore. A saved capture is written in a user-selected format and location. Under the legacy default behavior, the Library keeps those captures until you delete them. Do not apply the .SNAG/Datastore description to newer releases without checking their documentation: Snagit Library, Saved Captures Versus Unsaved Captures (Snagit 2021 and Earlier).

Move or back up a Library without losing captures

Automatic saving is useful only if the resulting Library can be reopened. Treat a move or restore as a separate operation from changing the save preference.

  1. Record the Library location currently shown in Snagit’s preferences.
  2. Close Snagit before copying the Library folder.
  3. Copy the folder to the backup location or the new computer, preserving its contents.
  4. On the new installation, use Snagit’s Editor Preferences to select the copied Library folder as described in TechSmith’s transfer instructions.
  5. Open Snagit and verify several captures before removing the original copy.

Do not casually move an old Datastore folder with file-manager commands. TechSmith warns that moving it without exporting through Snagit can prevent captures from reopening in the Library. For legacy Datastore restoration, the restore procedure replaces the current captures; it does not merge two Datastores. Make a separate backup first and review Manually Backup and Restore a Snagit Datastore.

Troubleshoot automatic saving

The capture is not in the Library

  • On Windows, revisit Edit > Editor Preferences > Library and confirm Automatically save new image captures in the Library is enabled.
  • Check whether the capture used a File share or another Share destination instead of Library retention.
  • Confirm that you are viewing the Library in the same Snagit installation and user profile that made the capture.

The file has the wrong extension

  • Open the preset’s File gear control.
  • Select the required standard extension and save the preset again.
  • Make a test capture before relying on the revised preset.

Nothing appears in the destination until you click something

If Preview in the Editor is on, the capture requires Finish to finalize the File output. Either complete that step or adjust the preview behavior in the preset, then test the result.

The Mac folder is empty or different from the one you expected

Do not assume that a path from an older release still applies. Check Snagit > Settings > Advanced for the displayed Library location and use the path that belongs to your installed version.

A restored Library replaced newer captures

That is consistent with TechSmith’s Datastore restore warning: restoration replaces the current Library rather than merging it. Stop using the restored copy as your only backup, preserve the pre-restore copy, and recover the needed captures through Snagit’s supported export or transfer process.

The preference names do not match

TechSmith’s current step-by-step path is Windows-specific and tied to the support article updated August 19, 2025. Release and platform differences can change labels. Use the equivalent Library and File-output controls in your version instead of changing unrelated settings.

Choose a reliable workflow for your workload

  • Need annotations and later Snagit editing: keep automatic Library saving enabled.
  • Need files for another application or upload: create a File-output preset with the required extension.
  • Need both: test whether your release and preset can retain the capture in the Library while also sharing to File; if the result is not what you expect, keep a Library workflow for the master capture and use a separate export step.
  • Need a repeatable unattended process: verify the preset with a small test batch first. The documented Finish behavior means Editor preview can still require a human completion step.

Keep a backup before changing Library locations, migrating between versions, or restoring a Datastore. Verify the actual displayed folder and open representative captures after any move.

If what you really need is automated screenshots of public web pages rather than Snagit desktop captures, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one request. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options and authentication. A direct cURL request is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
