To make a featured image open its post when clicked, either wrap the thumbnail in a permalink anchor in the theme template, use WordPress’s post_thumbnail_html filter, or configure a plugin. First decide whether you are changing archive cards, Query Loops, single-post images, or all of them, and check that the theme or block does not already add a link.

Choose the destination and page context first

A featured image can point to several different destinations. A post permalink opens the article; a full-size image is normally used for a lightbox or image viewer; an attachment page opens WordPress’s attachment view; and no link leaves the image decorative. Archive cards and Query Loops commonly need the post permalink, while a single-post hero image may be intended for the full-size file.

Where the image appears Typical destination Best control
Archive, category, search or custom card Current post permalink Template anchor or a carefully scoped filter
Query Loop block Current post permalink Block settings or a compatible plugin
Single post or page hero image Full-size image, attachment page, post permalink or no link Single-image setting or template-specific code

Option 1: wrap the thumbnail in the theme loop

Use this when you control the theme and want the behavior in one archive, card, or template. WordPress calls featured images “Post Thumbnails” in theme development. The post type must support featured images before the editor displays the Featured Image control.

  1. Open the template that outputs the card or loop (for example, an archive or custom listing template).
  2. Locate the existing the_post_thumbnail() call.
  3. Replace it with this conditional wrapper:
<?php if ( has_post_thumbnail() ) : ?>
  <a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>">
    <?php the_post_thumbnail(); ?>
  </a>
<?php endif; ?>

The anchor is created only when the post has a thumbnail, and the_permalink() supplies the current loop item’s URL. Keep this change limited to the loop where you want linked images. WordPress’s theme documentation presents separate approaches for linking to the post and linking to a larger image; do not combine those alternatives in the same markup.

Option 2: use the post_thumbnail_html filter

The filter lets you wrap generated thumbnail HTML centrally. WordPress passes the thumbnail HTML, post ID and attachment ID to the callback. This is useful when several templates use the standard thumbnail function, but it can affect more contexts than intended.

add_filter( 'post_thumbnail_html', 'my_post_image_html', 10, 3 );
function my_post_image_html( $html, $post_id, $post_image_id ) {
    $html = '<a href="' . get_permalink( $post_id ) . '">' . $html . '</a>';
    return $html;
}

Scope the filter before enabling it

  • Check whether the theme already emits an anchor around the thumbnail.
  • Inspect block output, especially Query Loop markup, for an existing link.
  • Confirm that every context receiving the filter should open the post rather than the image file.
  • Test posts, pages and custom post types separately when they use different templates.

If a thumbnail is already inside an anchor, adding another wrapper creates invalid nested links and unpredictable clicks. A template-level anchor is usually safer when only one archive or card design needs the behavior.

Option 3: configure a plugin without editing theme files

The WordPress.org plugin Clickable Featured Image provides settings for single posts/pages and for archives or Query Loops. It can target supported post types and lets you choose whether an image links to the full-size file, an attachment page, the post permalink or nowhere, depending on context.

Important default behavior

  • Single-post featured images link to the full-size image by default.
  • Query Loop featured images link to their posts by default.
  • The plugin says it leaves images that are already linked by the theme or block unchanged.

Therefore, open the plugin’s single-post setting if your requirement is specifically “click the image to open this post”; do not assume the single-image default has that destination. The listing says it works with the core Featured Image and Query Loop blocks and reports testing with GeneratePress and Twenty Twenty-Four. Those are publisher-reported compatibility claims, not a guarantee for every theme.

About the similarly named plugin

Make featured image link to blog post describes a post_thumbnail_html-based solution and warns that the theme may already provide the behavior. Its older, sparse listing makes current maintenance and theme fit worth checking before installation; it is not necessary when a template change or the better-documented settings route meets your needs.

Theme code, filter or plugin: which should you use?

Approach Scope Advantages Risks or limits
Template anchor One loop or template Precise destination and minimal side effects Must be reapplied if the theme is replaced; requires theme-file access
post_thumbnail_html filter Any output passing through the filter Centralized and reusable May alter single posts, archives or custom contexts unintentionally; can duplicate existing anchors
Clickable Featured Image plugin Configured single, archive and Query Loop contexts UI settings, post-type selection and duplicate-link avoidance Behavior depends on theme/block compatibility; defaults differ by context

Verify the result and troubleshoot failures

  1. Open an archive or Query Loop containing a featured image and click it. Confirm that the browser opens that post’s permalink.
  2. Open a single post and test its featured image separately; it may intentionally use a full-size-image destination.
  3. Inspect the rendered HTML in your browser’s developer tools. There should be one appropriate <a> around the image, not nested anchors.
  4. Test a post without a featured image, a page, and each custom post type that should be covered.
  5. Clear any page, object or CDN cache after changing templates, filters or plugin settings.

If the image still is not clickable

  • Confirm the theme declares featured-image support and that the template actually calls the_post_thumbnail().
  • Check whether a block’s link setting is set to “None” or whether a custom card component uses different markup.
  • Verify that the plugin’s affected post types include the content you are testing.
  • Look for a JavaScript overlay or CSS layer intercepting clicks after confirming the anchor exists.

If the wrong target opens

  • For a plugin, review single-post and archive/Query Loop destinations independently.
  • For a filter, confirm that get_permalink( $post_id ) is receiving the intended post ID.
  • Remove the filter or wrapper from contexts where a lightbox or full-size image is the desired destination.

Compatibility and version qualifications

WordPress’s “Featured Images & Post Thumbnails” developer documentation was last updated October 27, 2022, so theme APIs and examples should be checked against the WordPress version you run. The WordPress.com directory snapshot for Clickable Featured Image reported version 1.1.3, updated July 6, 2026, and tested up to WordPress 7.0.2. That directory information is dated and is not an independent compatibility test; verify the current plugin listing and test on your own theme before deploying.
