Generate all slides consistently before you upload.
Choose the canvas before you design
A cover template is easiest to automate when its dimensions never change. Adobe Express documents an “Instagram carousel post” preset at 1,080 × 1,080 pixels. Square files are a practical default because they leave equal space for text and avoid unexpected cropping when a scheduler or API normalizes the carousel.
Instagram business publishing documentation cited by Adobe allows image aspect ratios from 4:5 to 1.91:1, widths from 320 to 1,440 pixels, and image files up to 8MB. Portrait 4:5 images can provide more vertical room, but every slide should use the same ratio. The publishing API guide cited by Oliver Ames says Instagram crops carousel images to the first image’s aspect ratio, so mixing square and portrait artwork is unsafe.

Keep important text inside a generous inner margin rather than touching the edges. A 1,080-pixel square with a 72-pixel margin on each side leaves a 936-pixel working area. Treat that margin as a design rule in your template, not as a last-minute adjustment.

Design one reusable cover template
Automation works when the variable data is separated from the visual system. Lock the brand elements once, then inject only the fields that change for each post.
Fixed elements
- Logo position and size.
- Brand colors and background treatment.
- Headline and subtitle typefaces, weights, and line spacing.
- Text alignment, safe margins, and maximum line lengths.
- Slide number or series label, if your format uses one.
- Optional image frame, gradient, or decorative shape.
Variable fields
- Cover title.
- Short subtitle or promise.
- Background color or image.
- Subject photograph or illustration.
- Series number and publication date.
Set a maximum character count for titles before generation. A design that looks good with “Five ways to automate reports” may fail when a title is twice as long. Your generator should wrap text, reduce the font within a defined range, or reject the record for manual review; it should not silently place text outside the safe area.
Generate covers in bulk with Python
The following local example uses Pillow to render a square set from a CSV file. It creates a colored background, wraps a title and subtitle, and writes one JPEG per row. Replace the fonts and colors with your brand assets. Install Pillow first with python -m pip install pillow.

This script deliberately fails when a file exceeds 8MB instead of silently producing an invalid upload. For a production pipeline, add a font-availability check, a title-length rule, and a review folder for rows that cannot be rendered safely.

Use a design API when non-developers edit the template
Canva’s documented design API supports custom height and width, and its asset APIs upload image files for use in designs. That makes it suitable when a content team needs to maintain the template in a design editor while a service supplies titles, photos, and colors. Keep the API payload limited to the variable fields and preserve the template’s dimensions in one source of truth.
Adobe Express documents the “Instagram carousel post” canvas type and an Instagram business Content Scheduler specification in which carousel publishing is available. It also documents a maximum of 10 images and/or videos for an Instagram business carousel. Confirm that your account, scheduler, and region expose the same publishing option before building an unattended job.
Validate every generated carousel before upload
Validation should happen before authentication or publishing. Check the complete set, not just the cover.
- Count: keep the attachment set at 10 images and/or videos or fewer, matching Adobe’s documented business-carousel maximum.
- Dimensions: verify that every file has the same width, height, and aspect ratio.
- Format: use JPEG or PNG for image slides, with a consistent color mode.
- Size: reject any image larger than 8MB under the cited Adobe documentation.
- Text: render a contact sheet and inspect line breaks, contrast, logo placement, and safe margins.
- Ordering: sort by an explicit sequence field; never rely on filesystem order.
- Content: confirm that the title, subtitle, background, and optional subject image belong to the same post.

Publish manually or automate the media-container flow
A no-code scheduler is the quickest route when a person should approve the visual set and caption. Upload the validated files, place the cover first, preview the crop, and schedule the post. This route reduces authentication work but leaves batch size, ordering, and file checks partly in the scheduler’s interface.

Direct API automation gives you deterministic ordering and repeatable validation. The Instagram API guide cited by Oliver Ames describes a two-stage pattern: create a media container, then publish it. A robust job should therefore:
- Upload or make each image reachable to the publishing service.
- Create child media containers for the slides in their final order.
- Create the carousel container with the first image’s intended aspect ratio.
- Wait for processing status rather than assuming an upload is immediately ready.
- Publish only after all children are accepted and your validation record is complete.
- Store the returned identifiers, timestamp, and source filenames for recovery.
Authentication is the main trade-off. A scheduler hides token management but offers less control. Direct automation requires secure token storage, refresh or expiration handling, retry logic, and a way to stop a job when one child upload fails.
Handle failures without publishing a broken set
Unexpected crop
Cause: slides use different aspect ratios, or the first image was generated at a different size. Fix: regenerate the complete set from one canvas definition and make the intended cover the first item.
Upload rejected for size
Cause: a PNG with photographic content or an unoptimized image exceeds 8MB. Fix: resize to the approved canvas, remove unnecessary metadata, or export photographic slides as high-quality JPEG while retaining PNG for artwork that needs transparency.

Text is clipped
Cause: a title exceeds the template’s available width or font metrics differ between machines. Fix: bundle the exact font, measure rendered text, wrap by pixel width, and fail the row when it cannot fit within the approved font range.
Carousel has the wrong order
Cause: filenames were sorted alphabetically or jobs completed out of order. Fix: include a numeric sequence in your data and submit children in that explicit order.
Only some media containers are ready
Cause: processing is asynchronous. Fix: poll the documented status endpoint, use bounded retries with backoff, and do not publish until every child reports success. Keep failed children for inspection rather than silently skipping them.
Scheduler cannot publish to Instagram
Cause: account type, permissions, region, or scheduler support differs from the documented specification. Fix: verify that the account is eligible for Instagram business publishing, reconnect the account, and use a manual approval step while you investigate.

Plan for repeatable, recoverable runs
- Keep the template, font files, and generator version under source control.
- Save the input row, rendered files, validation report, and publishing identifiers together.
- Use deterministic filenames such as
2026-09-series-03-01.jpg. - Generate a contact sheet for human approval before publishing large batches.
- Retry network operations, but never retry a publish call blindly without checking whether it succeeded.
- Archive the exact first image used, because it controls the carousel crop.

What is the best size for an Instagram carousel cover?
Use 1,080 × 1,080 pixels as the safest general-purpose preset. A 1,080 × 1,350 portrait canvas is also within the documented 4:5–1.91:1 range, but every slide must share the first image’s ratio.
Can a carousel contain both images and videos?
