You can automate Astro-to-DEV.to cross-posting by having a CI job or other automation read selected Astro posts and call DEV’s POST /api/articles endpoint. Send the post as Markdown, set canonical_url to its live Astro URL, and start with published: false so you can review the DEV draft before publishing.

How the workflow fits together

Astro organizes and builds your content; it does not automatically publish collection entries to DEV.to. A separate automation step must select a post, prepare the API payload, and send it to DEV. Astro content collections can help define and query posts with validated metadata, but an item in a collection is not automatically a route. Your public source URL must match the route your site actually serves, not simply the Markdown file path. See Astro’s content collections documentation.

The DEV API supports article creation with a title and Markdown body, along with fields such as tags, description, main image, and canonical URL. The DEV API v0 reference documents POST /api/articles; the Forem API v1 reference also documents creating and updating articles.

Choose when and what to cross-post

Run the automation only after the Astro post is ready and its public URL is available. The right trigger depends on your deployment setup; the official documentation does not prescribe a particular CI provider or trigger.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Trigger Useful when Consideration
Manual CI dispatch You want an explicit action for each cross-post. A person must start the job; prevent repeat dispatches from creating extra articles.
Publish label or commit Your editorial workflow marks posts ready for distribution. One post may trigger more than once, so the job needs a stable record of what it has already submitted.
Post-deploy job The original article must be live before its URL is sent to DEV. Confirm that deployment completed successfully before creating the DEV article.

In your Astro content metadata, add a project-specific opt-in such as crosspost: true if only some posts should be sent. Exclude drafts. Map only fields DEV needs—such as title, description, tags, image, and body—instead of forwarding Astro-specific front matter wholesale. The schema and field names are your project’s choice.

Prepare the article and canonical URL

Read the source Markdown and its front matter, then construct the API article object deliberately. Derive the original URL from your configured site origin and the post’s actual route or slug. Set canonical_url to that original Astro URL; this tells search engines where the article first appeared. Forem’s API v1 reference describes the field as the canonical URL for a post originally published elsewhere, to maintain SEO integrity.

The DEV API documentation notes that Markdown front matter takes precedence over equivalent payload parameters. Avoid carrying Astro-only front matter into the body unless you intend DEV to interpret it as article metadata.

Send a draft to DEV.to first

Store the DEV API key in your automation environment’s secret store, not in source code or a committed configuration file. Send it in the api-key header, include a User-Agent header, and submit JSON. The v0 documentation says published defaults to false, but setting it explicitly makes your intended behavior clear.

Replace the example values with the real post data and your site’s public URL. Treat the API key as a secret and do not print it in logs. Review the resulting DEV draft for formatting, links, metadata, and images before switching to automatic publication.

Choose draft review or immediate publishing

Mode API setting Trade-off
Draft-first published: false Lets an editor inspect the DEV rendering before publication; requires a separate review and publish step.
Immediate published: true Publishes when the API request succeeds, reducing manual work but risking publication of unfinished or incorrectly formatted content.

Both modes use the documented published field. Start with drafts until the content mapping and retry behavior are reliable; make immediate publishing an explicit choice rather than an accidental default.

Prevent duplicate articles and handle API failures

Article creation is not documented as idempotent: repeating a create request after an uncertain timeout may create a duplicate. Keep a durable mapping from the source post’s stable identifier—such as its slug or content ID—to the DEV article ID returned on creation. On later runs, update that DEV article by ID rather than creating another one. Forem API v1 documents updates through PUT /api/articles/{id}.

  • Record the source identifier and returned DEV article ID after a successful create.
  • For an uncertain timeout, check whether the article was created before retrying; do not blindly repeat the create request.
  • Handle HTTP errors explicitly. The v0 reference lists 201 for success and 400, 401, 403, 422, and 429 responses.
  • For a 429 rate-limit response, wait and retry with backoff. The v0 article-creation limit is 10 requests per 30 seconds.
  • Log status codes and safe diagnostic details, but do not log the API key or unnecessarily expose private post content.

These safeguards are implementation practices, not a guarantee that the API will deduplicate requests. Check the current DEV API documentation when implementing because endpoint behavior and limits may change.

Implementation checklist

  1. Choose a trigger: use a manual dispatch, editorial signal, or post-deploy job suited to your deployment, and ensure the Astro article is ready first.
  2. Select eligible content: exclude drafts and optionally require an explicit cross-post flag.
  3. Build the payload: map the title and Markdown body, then add only intended metadata and the real public Astro URL as canonical_url.
  4. Create a DEV draft: send POST /api/articles with the API key, a User-Agent, and published: false.
  5. Review and publish: inspect the draft, then decide whether future articles remain draft-first or should publish immediately.
  6. Persist the mapping: save the DEV article ID against the source post so subsequent runs can update instead of recreate.
  7. Make failures safe: handle rate limits with backoff and check the result after uncertain timeouts before attempting another create.
