Short answer: build a scheduled, authorized browser workflow that opens each platform’s ad preview or campaign view, captures the rendered creative, and stores the image with its timestamp and campaign identifiers. Use platform reporting APIs alongside the images, because delivery metrics and a screenshot answer different questions. A preview is not proof that a specific person saw a particular auction placement.
Decide what evidence you actually need
“A screenshot of a running ad” can mean three different things:
- Creative review: an image of the ad as rendered in an account preview or campaign interface.
- Placement evidence: a capture of a public page where an ad happened to render for a particular viewer and context.
- Delivery reporting: impressions, clicks, spend, reach and other structured metrics from the advertising platform.
These are not interchangeable. Google Ads reporting can retrieve performance data for resources from campaigns to keywords through Search or SearchStream, but the result is structured data, not a picture. TikTok’s documented Campaign Previewing workflow can show an ad on a phone through a QR code or user ID; it does not describe an automatic archive of live placements. Plan your capture and retention policy around the evidence type your team must defend.
What the major platforms provide
Google Ads
Google for Developers lists the Google Ads API and Google Ads scripts among its advertising tools. Google describes the API as intended for developers serving larger or technically capable advertisers and third parties; common uses include campaign interaction and custom reports. Use that API to enumerate campaigns, ads, status and performance, then hand each ad to a visual capture step. The reporting interface alone will not create screenshots.

TikTok Ads
TikTok Ads Manager’s documented phone preview lets an operator display an ad using a QR code or user ID. Treat that as an account-authorized preview. It may differ from what a person receives in the auction because targeting, device, geography, feed context and dynamic rendering can change. TikTok’s Commercial Content API exposes public ad and advertiser metadata, including publication and last-seen information, for research; it is not documented as an endpoint that captures screenshots from your authenticated advertiser account.
Policy and authorization
Google Ads policies list reporting and monitoring services that improve campaign or management experiences among approved developer-service use cases in relevant contexts. That does not approve every capture design, and it says nothing about another platform’s rules. Obtain the account owner’s permission, use the platform’s supported authentication flow, and re-check current policies before production.
A repeatable capture architecture
- Define scope. Record platforms, accounts, campaigns, ad IDs, placements, countries, devices, languages and capture frequency. Decide whether you need a preview, an account UI view or a public placement.
- Collect identifiers and metrics. Use the platform API or an approved export to build a queue containing campaign, ad, creative, status and the reporting interval. Keep this metadata even when a capture fails.
- Authenticate safely. Run browser automation with an authorized service account, delegated user or isolated operator profile. Store secrets in a secret manager; never put passwords in scripts or screenshots.
- Open the supported view. Navigate to the platform’s preview or campaign page. Select the intended placement, device and locale where the UI permits it. Wait for the creative and any lazy-loaded assets to finish rendering.
- Capture and label. Save PNG, JPEG or WebP with an immutable filename such as platform_account_campaign_ad_2026-09-29T14-05-00Z.webp. Store capture time, timezone, URL, placement, viewport, account and ad IDs, and a success/failure reason in a database.
- Retain an audit trail. Keep the API response that selected the ad, the screenshot hash, automation version and policy decision. Restrict access because previews can contain confidential targeting or creative information.
- Compare over time. A scheduled job can flag missing ads, unexpected creative changes, expired sessions or a preview that no longer loads. Do not label a preview “served to users” unless you have separate delivery evidence.
Scheduling and reliability
Cadence
Capture at the cadence your decision requires: before launch, after creative edits, and at regular intervals while an ad is active. A high frequency does not compensate for an unauthorised or unstable view. Use a queue with retry limits and exponential backoff so a platform outage does not create a burst of requests.

Session and interface failures
Authenticated pages commonly fail when a session expires, multi-factor authentication is required, a consent dialog blocks the preview, or the platform changes its DOM. Detect these states explicitly and alert an operator instead of saving a misleading blank image. Pin browser versions where practical, but expect selectors and labels to change.

Record viewport dimensions, device emulation, pixel ratio, locale, timezone and user agent. A screenshot without those fields cannot establish the context in which it was rendered. Hash files on write and make stored objects immutable if they may be used for compliance or dispute review.

There is no universal cross-platform mechanism established for automatically archiving every live placement. Select the narrowest method that answers your question and document what the image does—and does not—prove.

The image is blank
Check that the page completed navigation, wait for a known creative selector or network idle, and inspect whether a bot check, login wall or iframe prevented rendering. Save the failure status rather than treating the blank file as evidence.

The wrong creative appears
Verify account, campaign, ad and placement IDs immediately before capture. Fix locale, timezone, device and viewport settings, and avoid relying on a remembered URL when the platform creates dynamic preview links.
Automation is redirected to login
Refresh the authorized session through the platform’s supported method. Do not bypass MFA, CAPTCHA or access controls. Alert on repeated expiry and rotate credentials through your secret-management process.
Captures are inconsistent
Wait for lazy-loaded media, block unnecessary third-party resources only when that cannot alter the creative, and record browser and viewport details. Retry transient network errors with a bounded backoff; keep the first failure and final outcome in the audit record.

Costs or request volume are rising
Capture only active ads, use a deliberate cadence, choose an appropriate image format and dimensions, and set a cache TTL when a repeat capture is genuinely identical. Bulk jobs can reduce orchestration overhead, but do not cache when evidence of a new render is required.
Operational checklist
- Written permission and current platform-policy review
- Defined distinction between preview, public placement and reporting evidence
- Stable campaign/ad identifiers and a documented placement scope
- Secure authentication and secret rotation
- Timestamp, timezone, viewport, locale and source URL stored with every image
- Explicit handling for bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and expired sessions
- Immutable storage, access controls and retention period
- Monitoring for selector, browser and platform-interface changes
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot prove an ad was served to a specific user?
No. A preview or test capture shows one rendered context. Establishing delivery to a particular viewer requires separate platform delivery records and, where applicable, lawful user-level evidence.
Should screenshots replace Google Ads or TikTok reporting?
No. Keep structured reporting for delivery and performance, and use screenshots for visual and contextual evidence.
Is TikTok’s Commercial Content API an advertiser screenshot API?
It is documented as a source of public commercial-content metadata for research, not as an authenticated endpoint for archiving your account’s rendered previews.
