For screenshots that repeat without you present, use a capture script and Windows Task Scheduler. Snipping Tool can delay a capture by one to five seconds, but it is not a recurring scheduler. A packaged Windows app can invoke Microsoft’s ms-screenclip protocol, while a PowerShell or .NET script can save image files on a schedule.
Choose the right Windows 10 screenshot method
Your choice depends on whether a person is operating the desktop and whether the capture must repeat.

A scheduled screenshot of a visible desktop generally requires an interactive, unlocked session. A task configured to run whether or not a user is logged on may not have a usable desktop to copy. Test the account and lock-screen behavior before relying on the files for monitoring or evidence.
Take a normal or delayed screenshot with Snipping Tool
Microsoft describes Snipping Tool as a way to “Take a snapshot to copy words or images from all or part of your PC screen.” It supports rectangular, freeform, window and full-screen snips on Windows 10.

- Open Start, type Snipping Tool, and open it.
- Select Mode, then choose Free-form Snip, Rectangular Snip, Window Snip or Full-screen Snip.
- For a transient menu or tooltip, open Delay and select one, two, three, four or five seconds.
- Choose New, compose the screen during the countdown, and complete the selection.
- Edit if needed, then select File > Save As or press Ctrl+S.
Alt+D is the documented shortcut for the delay control. Delay is a countdown for one capture; it does not create a repeating job.
Use the keyboard for an immediate capture
Windows logo key + Shift + S
Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The snipping overlay appears. Select a mode, capture the area, and Windows copies the result to the clipboard. Open an image editor or document and press Ctrl+V to paste it, then save the file.
Print Screen
Press Print Screen to copy the full screen to the clipboard. Paste it into Paint or another editor and save it. This shortcut is manual and has no filename or folder policy, so it is unsuitable for unattended collection.
Request a capture from a packaged Windows app
Microsoft Learn documents the ms-screenclip URI protocol for rectangle, freeform and window image capture. A packaged app that meets Microsoft’s protocol and supported-API requirements can request, for example:

ms-screenclip://capture/image?rectangle&auto-saveThe auto-save flag is not an unconditional file-write command. Microsoft states that it respects the user’s automatic-save setting in Snipping Tool. If that setting is disabled, the app should not assume a file will appear. This route is intended for app integration, not as a general-purpose Windows 10 scheduler.
Automatically save recurring screenshots with PowerShell and Task Scheduler
For a repeating series, use a script that captures the current desktop and writes a uniquely named image, then register that script with Task Scheduler. The following example uses .NET’s System.Drawing APIs, saves PNG files, and captures the primary display. It is a practical starting point rather than a universal policy: choose the interval, folder, retention and account that fit your environment.
1. Create the capture script
Create C:ScriptsCapture-Desktop.ps1 with this content:

}Change $output to a folder where the task account has write permission. The timestamp includes milliseconds, reducing collisions when captures are close together. This example captures only the primary monitor. Extending it to every monitor requires enumerating [System.Windows.Forms.Screen]::AllScreens and combining their bounds; test the coordinate layout if a monitor is positioned to the left or above the primary display.

2. Test it interactively
- Open PowerShell in the signed-in desktop session.
- Run
powershell.exe -NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File C:ScriptsCapture-Desktop.ps1. - Open
C:Screenshotsand verify that the PNG shows the intended screen and that its timestamp is unique.
If your organization’s execution-policy rules prohibit Bypass, sign the script or use the policy approved by your administrator instead. Do not weaken policy merely to hide an error.
3. Create a scheduled task in Task Scheduler
- Open Start, search for Task Scheduler, and open it.
- Choose Create Task… (not only Create Basic Task if you need detailed conditions).
- On General, give the task a name such as
Recurring desktop screenshot. Select the account that owns the desktop you intend to capture. Use Run only when user is logged on for a visible interactive desktop. - On Triggers, select New…, choose a start time, and set Repeat task every to your interval. Set a duration or choose Indefinitely where that is appropriate.
- On Actions, select New…. Set Program/script to
powershell.exe. In Add arguments, enter-NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File "C:ScriptsCapture-Desktop.ps1". Set Start in toC:Scripts. - On Conditions, clear power or idle restrictions that would unexpectedly prevent captures, while considering battery and privacy requirements.
- On Settings, enable Run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed only if a catch-up image is useful. Decide what should happen when an instance is already running; overlapping jobs can create unnecessary load.
- Select OK, provide credentials if requested, and use Run to test the task immediately.
Microsoft’s New-ScheduledTask documentation makes an important distinction: it creates a task object, but does not automatically register that object with the Task Scheduler service. If you build the task in PowerShell instead of the GUI, registration is a separate step, such as Register-ScheduledTask. Always confirm the task appears in Task Scheduler and inspect History after a test run.
PowerShell registration example
This example creates a task that starts at the next 10-minute boundary and repeats every 10 minutes for one day. Run it in an elevated PowerShell window only when the chosen account and policy permit it:

If this registration form is rejected, use the Task Scheduler GUI, which exposes the same trigger fields directly, or create and register the task with the cmdlets supported by your Windows 10 build.

Storage, interval and privacy decisions
Prevent unbounded disk growth
A 1-minute schedule creates 1,440 files per day before compression or cleanup. Add a retention step that deletes files older than your policy, or schedule a separate cleanup task. Keep the screenshot directory access-controlled because images may contain passwords, private messages or personal data.
Select an interval that answers the question
- Use seconds or a few minutes only for a short-lived diagnostic session.
- Use 10–30 minutes for periodic status evidence.
- Use event-triggered logging instead of screenshots when exact application events matter.
More frequent captures increase CPU, disk and review costs. PNG preserves text sharply; JPEG uses less space but introduces compression artifacts.
Understand desktop state
CopyFromScreen captures what is rendered in the selected session. A locked workstation, disconnected remote session, secure desktop prompt or minimized/occluded content can produce an image that does not represent the screen a human would see. Never treat a successful task exit code as proof that the intended pixels were captured.
Troubleshoot common failures

Can Snipping Tool take screenshots every minute by itself?
No. Its Delay control schedules one capture up to five seconds ahead. Repeating captures require a script, an application integration or another scheduler.
Will Print Screen automatically create image files?
No. Print Screen copies the full screen to the clipboard. Paste the result into an editor and save it, or use a file-writing script for automation.
