To capture the same screen setup repeatedly, save a Snagit preset and assign it a hotkey. For temporary menus or tooltips, use a delayed capture. On Windows, Snagit also supports scheduled and recurring interval captures; on Windows and Mac, scrolling capture can grab content beyond the visible screen. The right method depends on whether you need a repeatable keypress, a timed capture, an unattended schedule, or a long page.

Choose the Snagit capture method that fits the job

What you need Snagit method Platform and behavior
Repeat the same capture settings with one key Saved preset plus preset hotkey Windows workflow is documented directly; Snagit generally supports shortcuts.
Capture a dropdown, tooltip, hover state, or pop-up Delayed screenshot Core delayed capture works on Windows and Mac; delay can be set up to one minute.
Capture at a date and time or at regular intervals Scheduled or continuous capture Windows only in current TechSmith documentation.
Capture an entire webpage or long table Scrolling capture Vertical and horizontal scrolling are supported; manual scrolling is available if automatic arrows do not appear.

Snagit’s capture window, presets, and capture mode control what gets captured and what happens next. Decide first whether the target is a visible region, a transient interface state, a recurring time-based event, or content outside the screen.

Set up repeatable one-key captures with a preset

A preset stores a capture configuration so repeated images use the same input, capture type, preview, cursor, delay, effects, and output settings. A preset is more reliable than relying on OneClick when exact settings matter: OneClick’s default button uses All-in-One capture with preview and cursor capture, and no delay; it does not simply inherit every setting currently displayed in the Capture window.

  1. Open Snagit’s Capture window and choose the input and image capture type you need.
  2. Set preview, cursor, delay, effects, and share or output options as required.
  3. Save those settings as a preset.
  4. Open the Presets button, choose the saved preset, and select Add Hotkey.
  5. Assign an unused key combination. Press that preset hotkey whenever you need the same configuration.

The global Print Screen hotkey starts a capture using the settings currently selected in the Capture window. Use a specific preset hotkey instead when you need a named, repeatable configuration rather than whatever settings happen to be selected. TechSmith’s Capture Modes in Snagit Windows documentation was updated August 23, 2024.

Resolve hotkey conflicts

If another application already uses your chosen combination, Snagit may not receive the shortcut as expected. Pick a different combination in Snagit’s hotkey settings or allow Snagit to override the conflict, as appropriate for your setup. Be deliberate about overriding: a key combination that another application relies on may stop invoking that application’s action.

Use a delay to capture a menu or temporary screen state

A delayed capture gives you time to prepare the screen after starting the capture. It is useful for dropdown menus that close when focus changes, hover states, tooltips, timed pop-ups, or an auto-advancing slide. Snagit allows a custom delay of up to one minute, and you can choose the capture type before the timer starts. Delay settings can be saved for repeat use.

  1. In Snagit’s Capture window, select the desired capture type and set a delay of up to one minute.
  2. Start the capture so the timer begins.
  3. Before the timer expires, open the dropdown, hover over the target, trigger the tooltip or pop-up, or position the screen as needed.
  4. Let the timer finish; Snagit captures the prepared state.

For a menu, position the pointer and open the menu in the order that works for the target application. If opening the menu requires a click that starts capture only after the menu has already disappeared, start the delayed capture first, then perform the interaction during the countdown. TechSmith describes delayed screenshots for “dropdowns, hover states, tooltips, and timed pop-ups.” Its delayed screenshot instructions cover the feature on Windows and Mac.

Schedule or repeat captures on Windows

Snagit for Windows documents scheduled capture at a specific date and time and continuous capture at regular intervals. These options are for unattended time-based workflows such as documenting auto-advancing slides, creating time-lapse material, or tracking changes. Set the capture type and region before choosing the scheduled or continuous option and defining the timing.

  1. In the Capture window, choose the capture type and select the screen region or target input.
  2. Choose the scheduled capture option to set a date and time, or the continuous capture option for recurring captures.
  3. Set the requested timing and start the capture workflow.
  4. Confirm that the capture is running as intended and that the selected output settings suit the resulting files.

The exact labels and placement may vary by Snagit release. TechSmith’s current documentation describes scheduled and continuous capture as unavailable on Mac, so do not assume an equivalent unattended interval feature exists there. If you need recurring capture on a Mac, use another workflow rather than following Windows instructions.

Capture a full webpage or long table with scrolling capture

Scrolling capture extends beyond what is visible on screen, making it appropriate for a full webpage or long data table. In Snagit, launch All-in-One capture, open the target content, and click the orange scrolling arrow. Choose vertical or horizontal scrolling and let Snagit collect the content outside the visible area. The result opens in Snagit Editor, where it can be edited, copied, saved, or shared.

  1. Select All-in-One capture in Snagit and open the webpage or long content.
  2. Start the capture and click the orange scrolling arrow when it appears.
  3. Choose vertical or horizontal scrolling, as appropriate.
  4. Allow Snagit to collect the page or document, then review the result in Snagit Editor.

TechSmith Support confirms that Snagit supports scrolling capture “(vertically and horizontally!).” The support article was updated June 11, 2026: Snagit Capture Modes.

When the scrolling arrows are missing

Automatic scrolling is not available on every page or window. If the orange arrows do not appear, use manual scrolling capture: select the region, start scrolling capture, then use the window’s scroll bars or mouse wheel to control the movement. Scroll slowly on dynamic pages so content has time to load and is less likely to be missed or captured out of order.

What happens after an automatic capture?

The trigger and the destination are separate decisions. A preset or delayed capture determines when and how Snagit captures; the selected preview, share, or output settings determine what happens next. Scrolling capture opens its result in Snagit Editor, where you can edit, copy, save, or share it. Before a scheduled or continuous run, confirm the output configuration so repeated images go where you intend.

For repeatable work, standardize both the capture settings and the output. A preset reduces setup variation; a sensible output choice prevents a successful unattended capture from becoming difficult to locate or process.

Performance, reliability, and practical limits

  • Transient UI: A delay is more dependable than trying to race a disappearing menu with a manual capture hotkey.
  • Exact repetition: A saved preset and dedicated hotkey reduce variation in capture type, cursor, delay, and output options.
  • Unattended timing: Scheduled and continuous workflows are documented for Windows, not Mac.
  • Long pages: Scroll slowly through dynamic content; lazy or changing page elements may need time to settle during capture.
  • Platform changes: Feature names and availability can change between Snagit releases. Check the documentation for the installed version before basing a permanent workflow on a particular menu label.

Troubleshoot common Snagit automatic-capture problems

Symptom Likely cause What to do
The hotkey does nothing or starts another action Another application owns the same key combination. Assign a different Snagit hotkey, or allow Snagit to override the conflicting assignment if that is acceptable.
OneClick does not use the settings you expected OneClick’s default button uses its own All-in-One configuration and does not inherit every visible Capture-window setting. Save the required configuration as a preset and launch that preset with its own hotkey.
The dropdown or tooltip is missing from the image The transient state was not open or active when capture occurred. Set a delay, start capture, then open the menu or hover over the target during the countdown.
No orange scrolling arrows appear The target window or page may not expose automatic scrolling capture. Use manual scrolling capture with the window scroll bars or mouse wheel.
Parts of a dynamic page are absent or misaligned Content may still be loading or changing while Snagit scrolls. Scroll more slowly and allow the page to settle before continuing.
Scheduled or interval controls cannot be found on Mac Those unattended features are documented as Windows-only. Use delayed capture or another Mac-compatible workflow; do not assume Windows scheduling instructions apply.

Or skip the browser setup: capture a webpage with ScreenshotNeo

Snagit is useful when the capture must come from your desktop. For an automated website screenshot from code, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server: one GET request with a URL returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client.

Create an API key, then use the request below. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response behavior.
