Chrome DevTools Recorder lets you record a browser workflow, replay it, inspect and repair its steps, add checks, and export it for reuse. To make a flow more dependable, replay it early, use stable selectors, add assertions for important outcomes, and adjust waits where pages need more time. Recorder is a useful starting point for browser-flow automation, but recordings can still need maintenance as a site changes.

Open Chrome DevTools Recorder

  1. Open Chrome DevTools.
  2. Open the Command menu with Command+Shift+P on macOS, or Control+Shift+P on Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS.
  3. Type Recorder panel, select Show Recorder panel, and press Enter.

You can also open it from More options > More tools > Recorder panel. Recorder supports recording, replaying, editing, and debugging flows, creating performance profiles, and sharing or exporting flows. See Chrome DevTools Recorder.

Record and stabilize a user flow

Capture a representative journey

Start a new recording and perform the workflow you want to automate on the site or app. Use a representative journey rather than clicking through an unusual or incomplete path. Recorder tracks interactions, and its replay lets you repeat the sequence and inspect its steps.

Replay before polishing

Replay the recording soon after capturing it. Recorder runs a flow as quickly as it can by default; slower replay modes, breakpoints, and step-by-step execution help show where a step diverges from what you expect. Fixing problems early is easier than debugging a long flow after exporting it.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Edit the steps and check the result

Remove accidental actions, correct step parameters, and add missing actions. The code view updates as you edit the steps, but the code view itself is not editable. For an important result, add an assertion: Recorder creates a configurable waitForElement step. Assertions can check selectors, HTML attributes, JavaScript properties, visibility, and related values. If the expected condition is not met before the timeout, the assertion fails.

Choose stable selectors

Recorder can detect common test attributes such as data-testid, data-test, data-qa, and data-cy. Prefer stable test attributes where available, and coordinate them with the application team if needed. Classes and IDs used for styling or generated dynamically may change, which can break a recorded selector. No selector strategy makes a flow immune to application changes. See Chrome’s Recorder guidance.

Account for navigation and hover

Every recording begins with viewport and navigation steps. The navigation step sets the URL and refreshes the page on replay. Remove it if the automation should act within the current page without reloading.

Hover-dependent menus are an important capture edge case: Recorder may not automatically capture the hover action needed to reveal them. If replay cannot reach a menu that appears only on hover, add a hover step manually and configure it with an appropriate selector. Chrome documents this case in its Recorder features reference.

Set timeouts to match the page

The documented default step timeout is 5000 milliseconds. A slow request, delayed content, or long animation may take longer. Increase the global replay timeout when the flow consistently needs more time, or override the timeout on the specific step that is slow. Use assertions to wait for meaningful page conditions rather than relying on an arbitrary delay when a condition can be checked directly.

Choose an export that fits the next step

Export Best fit Can import back into Recorder?
JSON Keep human-readable flow data editable, share it, and import it into Recorder again. Yes
@puppeteer/replay Replay JSON flows with the Puppeteer Replay library, including command-line and CI workflows while retaining the flow data. Yes, as JSON flow data
Puppeteer script Get generated JavaScript for direct customization, such as adding loops. No
Puppeteer for Firefox Use the export option documented in connection with WebDriver BiDi support for Chrome and Firefox. Not stated by the reference
Puppeteer with Lighthouse analysis Generate code that adds Lighthouse analysis. Not stated by the reference

Use Recorder’s Export menu to choose an option. The choice depends on whether you need an importable flow, custom JavaScript, or a particular replay integration. The Chrome reference also lists converters for Cypress, Nightwatch, and CodeceptJS, plus replay options involving TestCafe and Sauce Labs. These are integrations, not a guarantee of current maintenance or compatibility; check their current status before adopting one. See the Recorder documentation.

Import or extend a flow

Recorder can import JSON recordings and replay them in the panel. Third-party Recorder extensions can add custom export and replay options: install an extension from the collection, open DevTools in a new tab, and check Recorder for its custom options. Extensions may be limited to certain web pages or blocked by administrator policy. Verify that an extension supports your browser and workflow before depending on it. See Chrome’s Recorder extensions instructions.

Troubleshoot common replay failures

Symptom Likely cause What to try
A step fails before content appears The page or request takes longer than the step timeout. Replay slowly to identify the failing step; increase the global timeout or override that step’s timeout. Add an assertion for the expected content where appropriate.
The flow reloads unexpectedly The recording’s initial navigation step sets a URL and refreshes the page. Remove the navigation step if the flow should operate in the already-open page.
A hover-only menu cannot be opened The hover action may not have been captured. Insert and configure a hover step with a selector for the relevant element.
A click cannot find its target after an app update The selector may rely on a class or ID that changed. Inspect and repair the step; use a stable test attribute such as data-testid where the application provides one.
You cannot edit exported script code in Recorder The code view reflects the steps but is not itself editable; generated Puppeteer JavaScript is also not importable into Recorder. Edit the flow’s steps or return to its JSON source when you need a Recorder-importable flow.

Or skip the browser setup

If you only need a clean screenshot or PDF of a page—not a replayable interaction flow—ScreenshotNeo can capture it with one GET request. It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
