Start with one browser test for a user journey that matters: open the page, interact with it using a user-visible control, and assert the result the user should see. Then run that same test locally and in continuous integration (CI). This guide uses Playwright for the walkthrough and explains when Cypress or a different test level may fit better.

What UI automation should prove

A UI test drives an application through its rendered interface and checks an outcome. For a sign-in flow, that might mean submitting valid credentials and confirming that an account page appears. The useful question is not whether a test can click through a page, but whether it catches a failure in a task users rely on.

Playwright’s guidance is to interact with the output a user sees. A first test can navigate to a page, find a link by its accessible role and name, click it, and check that a heading becomes visible. That pattern keeps the test tied to recognizable interface behavior rather than implementation details. See Playwright’s Best Practices.

Choose the right first test

Pick one important journey

Choose a task whose failure would matter, such as signing in, completing a purchase, or submitting a core form. Define the expected visible outcome before writing code: a confirmation message, a changed page heading, or an enabled control. Keep the first test narrow enough to diagnose when it fails.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use the test level that fits the risk

End-to-end (E2E) tests exercise a broader integrated journey through the browser. That coverage is useful when you need confidence that interface, application logic, and connected services work together, but it also brings browser setup and maintenance. A unit, API, or component test may be a more direct and less costly check for isolated behavior. Accessibility checks complement these test types rather than replacing them. Cypress describes E2E, component, API, and accessibility testing as serving different purposes in its testing-types guide.

Install Playwright for your project

Use the current installation instructions for your existing language, package manager, and operating system; the exact setup differs by project. For a Node.js project, the CI sequence documented by Playwright is to install project dependencies, install Playwright browsers and system dependencies, and then run the test runner. Consult Playwright’s CI guide for the commands and platform details that match your environment. Avoid copying a setup command without checking that it agrees with the package manager and lockfile the project uses.

Write and run one action-and-assertion test

Start from a user-visible interaction

This Playwright documentation example demonstrates the basic shape. It uses Playwright’s sample site; replace the URL and expected page state with your own application’s journey.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('get started link', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://playwright.dev/');
  await page.getByRole('link', { name: 'Get started' }).click();
  await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Installation' })).toBeVisible();
});

The test visits a page, locates a link by role and accessible name, performs an action, and asserts that the expected heading is visible. Playwright’s Writing tests guide explains this pattern, actionability checks, and retried assertions.

Use locators that reflect the interface

Prefer a role and accessible name for controls users can identify, such as getByRole('button', { name: 'Sign in' }). This makes the test’s intent easier to read and can expose a missing or unclear accessible label. Use other locator strategies when the interface gives no suitable user-facing identifier, but avoid selectors coupled to incidental layout or generated styling.

Wait for a meaningful state, not an arbitrary delay

Playwright waits for actionability conditions before performing actions, and its web-first assertions retry while the expected condition is not yet true. Assert the state that matters, such as a confirmation heading becoming visible. Routine fixed sleeps can slow the suite without making it more reliable. If a wait is genuinely necessary, connect it to an application state or a deliberately controlled network condition rather than an unexplained number of milliseconds.

Run locally, then move the same test into CI

Establish a reliable local run

Run the test using the command for the framework and project configuration. Confirm that it passes against the intended environment and that failures provide enough context to diagnose the problem. Keep the test independent of leftover browser state or data from an earlier run.

Make CI reproducible

In CI, start from a clean dependency install, install the browser binaries and required system dependencies, and invoke the test runner. Playwright recommends beginning with one worker to favor stability and reproducibility. If the available machine or CI job setup can support it, consider parallel workers or sharding later. Preserve useful failure diagnostics and investigate repeat failures instead of repeatedly rerunning them until they pass. Follow the provider-specific details in the official CI documentation.

Choose a framework against your team’s constraints

Playwright is a practical starting point when its runner, language support, and CI workflow suit the project. Cypress is also a real option, with a local app and an interactive workflow; its documentation also describes Cypress Cloud and other offerings. Cypress documents automatic waiting and debugging capabilities on its Why Cypress? page. Neither tool is a universal winner based on those descriptions alone. Check current official documentation for the exact browser and operating-system support your project requires.

Authoring workflow Whether the team prefers Playwright’s async/await style and integrated runner or Cypress’s command-chaining and interactive local workflow.
Locators and synchronization Whether tests can identify user-visible controls and wait for the application state that actually matters.
CI requirements Browser installation, system dependencies, worker limits, and whether parallel jobs or sharding are practical.
Debugging and reporting Which local debugging tools, artifacts, and team reporting are needed; check current terms if considering a hosted service.
Project fit The application’s language and frontend framework, team experience, and existing CI constraints.

Expand the suite by risk

Add browser tests for journeys where integrated user-visible behavior warrants the setup and maintenance cost. Do not treat test count as the goal. Use unit, API, or component checks where they provide a more direct signal, and layer accessibility checks where they address the risk. A green result is meaningful only if the test covers an important outcome and can be trusted; brittle selectors, shared state, and unexplained waits can weaken that trust.

Or skip the browser setup

If your immediate need is a screenshot rather than an interactive test, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is not a replacement for browser tests that need to perform actions and assert application behavior.

For a screenshot, the cURL example below captures Stripe as WebP. Replace the URL with the page you need and provide your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

Troubleshoot common failures

An element cannot be found

Check that the intended page loaded and that the control’s accessible role and name match the rendered interface. If the name or role changed, update the expectation to match the user-facing behavior rather than reaching for a fragile layout selector.

An action fails because the control is not ready

Check whether an overlay, navigation transition, or application state is preventing interaction. Prefer the framework’s actionability waiting and assert the relevant state; do not add a fixed delay as the first fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A test passes locally but fails in CI

Compare the installed dependencies, browser binaries, system dependencies, and environment configuration. Follow the same clean install and browser-install sequence in CI, and begin with one worker while diagnosing reproducibility.

A test fails intermittently

Look for shared data or browser state, a selector tied to unstable details, an assertion made before the meaningful state appears, or an uncontrolled external dependency. Fix the cause and retain useful diagnostics rather than masking repeat failures with retries alone.

The suite is slow or costly to maintain

Review whether each browser test protects an important integrated journey. Move isolated behavior to a more appropriate test level where possible, and consider parallel execution or sharding only when the CI resources and setup support it.
