Use the built-in Screenshot app for a one-time delayed capture, Automator imported into Shortcuts for a repeatable visual workflow, or the screencapture command for scripts that specify a file, display, region, format, or delay. The Screenshot app timer is not documented as a recurring scheduler, so unattended snapshots on a schedule require a saved workflow, a script launched by a scheduler, or a web screenshot service.
Choose the right Mac screenshot method

macOS Mojave 10.14 and later include the Screenshot app. On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, its format choices include SDR PNG and HDR HEIF. Confirm your installed version before depending on a particular option.
Take a timed screenshot with the Screenshot app
- Press Shift-Command-5, or open Applications > Utilities > Screenshot.
- Choose full-screen, window, or selected-area capture. For a direct shortcut, Shift-Command-3 captures the entire screen; Shift-Command-4 starts area selection. After Shift-Command-4, press Space to switch to window capture.
- Open Options.
- Under Timer, choose the delay you need, then set Save to to the destination folder.
- Use the same menu to show or hide the floating thumbnail and include or exclude the mouse pointer.
- Start the capture and perform the action that must occur before the delay expires.
Holding Control while using a screenshot shortcut routes the result to the clipboard instead of creating the normal file. Some applications, including Apple TV, may prevent window screenshots.
Automatically save captures to a folder
In Screenshot’s Options > Save to menu, select a listed folder or another available destination. This changes where subsequent captures are written; it does not create a recurring job. If you need dated filenames, file conversion, or another follow-up action, use Automator or a shell script.

What the timer does—and does not do
The documented timer delays one capture. Apple does not describe it as a repeating scheduler. For a screenshot every minute, hour, or day, create a workflow or script and launch it with a scheduling mechanism such as a calendar, Shortcuts automation, or another scheduler available on your Mac. Test the complete unattended path before relying on it.
Build a repeatable workflow with Automator and Shortcuts
Automator is useful when a screenshot is one step in a larger process: capture, rename, move, convert, upload, or notify. Apple documents importing Automator workflows into Shortcuts, and Automator provides Run Shell Script, Run AppleScript, and Run JavaScript actions.
- Open Automator and choose a workflow type appropriate to how you will launch it.
- Add Run Shell Script, Run AppleScript, or Run JavaScript. Use the script below when you want a deterministic output path.
- Add any file-handling or notification actions that are available on your macOS version.
- Run the workflow manually and inspect the output before saving it.
- Save the workflow, then import it into Shortcuts if you want a shortcut tile or an automation trigger.
Do not assume that every Mac exposes a particular built-in “take screenshot” action with identical behavior. The reliable part of Apple’s guidance is workflow import and scripting support; verify the actions shown on your own system.

Automate screenshots from the command line
The macOS screencapture utility can write an image to a file or the clipboard. Its manual lists controls for display selection (-D), delay (-T), rectangular capture (-R), format (-t), and sound suppression (-x), along with interactive selection and window modes.

Basic delayed file capture

Choose a display
screencapture -x -D 2 "$HOME/Desktop/display-2.png"Display numbering and supported combinations should be checked in the local manual. Multi-monitor layouts, Spaces, and Retina scaling can make coordinates or display selection surprising.
Select an output format

Use a shell loop carefully

doneThis example takes a local screenshot hourly until the process is stopped. It is intentionally simple: it does not survive logout or reboot, and it can create many files. For a durable schedule, launch a tested script through the scheduling facility you already administer on that Mac, and add retention or disk-space controls.
Quote every path
Always quote paths. Spaces, apostrophes, cloud-synced folders, and shell metacharacters can otherwise send output somewhere unexpected or make the command fail.

Schedule unattended captures responsibly
A recurring job has different failure modes from a timed manual capture. Before enabling it, decide:
- What is captured: the active display, a specific display, a window, or a fixed rectangle.
- When it runs: account for sleep, locked sessions, changing Spaces, and monitors that are disconnected.
- Where files go: use a dedicated directory and a filename containing date and time.
- How long files remain: delete or archive old images to avoid filling the startup disk.
- How failure is noticed: log exit status and verify that a non-empty file was created.
Run the command interactively first. Then test the scheduler with a short interval, confirm permissions and output, and only afterward move to the intended cadence. Do not treat the Screenshot app’s timer as proof that recurring scheduling is configured.

No file appears
Check the destination path, quoting, and write permissions. Run ls -l on the folder and try a simple path such as "$HOME/Desktop/test.png".
The wrong display or region is captured
Recheck display numbering, coordinate origin, Retina scaling, monitor arrangement, and whether the intended window is in the active Space. Test without a scheduler first.
The command works manually but not unattended
The scheduled process may run in a different user session, lack screen-recording permission, or run while the Mac is asleep or locked. Test under the same account and session used by the scheduler, then inspect its logs.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Wait for the application or page to finish rendering. For websites, use ScreenshotNeo’s selector, delay, or network-idle waits; for local apps, increase the script delay and verify that the target window is visible.

A window cannot be captured
Some applications, including Apple TV, restrict window screenshots. Capture the full display or use an application-supported export instead.
