Use Selenium WebDriver to open an authorized school website page, wait until the content you need is ready, then call save_screenshot() to save the browser’s current window as a PNG. That standard method captures the visible window, not necessarily the full page. Selenium’s Python Firefox API separately documents full-page screenshot methods, but those are browser-specific.
The example below uses Python and Chrome as a practical starting point. Replace the sample URL with a page you are allowed to access, and adjust the wait condition to match that site. For UDISE+ school information, check whether the official API is the appropriate route rather than treating a secure account page as a public target.
What this Selenium script captures
Selenium’s common Python WebDriver method, save_screenshot(), saves a PNG image of the current browser window. It does not promise to capture all content below the fold. Use it when the desired output is the viewport as currently rendered; choose a browser-specific full-page method if the entire document must appear in one image.

Prepare the target and output
- Choose the exact page URL, browser, screenshot scope, and output path.
- Confirm that you are authorized to access the page and that automated visits are permitted. No single permission rule applies to every independent school website.
- Create the output directory before running the script; Selenium reports an I/O problem by returning
Falsefromsave_screenshot(). - Decide whether you need a window-sized PNG or a full-document capture. The code below is for the current browser window.
Selenium’s API recommends using a full path ending in .png for the screenshot filename. See the Python WebDriver API documentation.
Install Selenium and run the Python example
Install Selenium in the Python environment that will run the script:
python -m pip install seleniumSave the following as capture_school_page.py. This example uses Chrome, sets a desktop viewport, waits for the document ready state, and checks the Boolean result of the screenshot call.

Selenium may use an installed browser driver or its supported driver management behavior depending on the local setup; if browser startup fails, verify that Chrome is installed and update Selenium and the browser to compatible versions.
Wait for the content you actually need
The document-ready check is a useful baseline, not a universal guarantee. If a school page inserts important content after initial navigation, wait for a stable element that identifies that content. For example, after importing By, you can wait for a heading with a site-specific selector:

)Choose a selector that exists on the target site and represents the part you need in the image. A selector copied from this example may not exist on another school’s website. If the page loads content only after scrolling, interact or scroll deliberately before capturing rather than assuming the initial viewport contains it.
Set the capture dimensions
The example asks Chrome for a 1440-by-1000 window size. Browser chrome and operating-system behavior can affect the actual screenshot dimensions, so inspect the saved PNG when exact pixel dimensions matter. Use a consistent browser, viewport, and device scale across a batch if the images will be compared.
Capture a full page in Firefox
Selenium’s Python Firefox WebDriver API documents save_full_page_screenshot(filename) for full-document capture. This is not a portable replacement for save_screenshot() across every browser. Use Firefox for this method and test it against the Selenium and Firefox versions deployed in your environment.

Run captures for multiple school pages
For a repeatable batch, keep the URL list explicit, save a separate file for each page, and always close the WebDriver—even when a navigation or file write fails. This simple pattern captures one current-window PNG per URL:

Handle UDISE+ pages carefully
UDISE+ is the Government of India’s Unified District Information System for Education Plus. Its homepage reported 14.67 lakh schools, 10.05 lakh government schools, 24.72 crore students, and 1.02 crore teachers for academic year 2025–26; these are portal figures for that academic year, not counts of websites or proof that all school information is public. The UDISE+ School Directory Management entry page asks users to continue securely with a UDISE+ account. If your task concerns UDISE+, establish that you have authorized access and consider whether the official UDISE+ API portal provides the data you need. Do not build an automation workflow around bypassing account controls.
Troubleshoot common capture failures

Performance, reliability, and storage
Each Selenium capture starts or reuses a real browser session and waits for the page to load, so the total time depends on the target site, network conditions, browser startup, and your wait logic. Keep batches moderate, use explicit timeouts, and handle failures per URL so one unavailable page does not prevent later captures. Do not increase request frequency beyond what the site and your authorization allow.
PNG output is lossless but can consume substantial storage for long pages or high-resolution pages. Use predictable naming, monitor disk space, and retain only the images your workflow needs. Selenium’s documented screenshot method writes PNG; it does not by itself provide a PDF or alternative image format through that call.
