Use Selenium WebDriver to open an authorized exam-results page, wait for the result content you need, and save a PNG. A standard browser screenshot captures the visible viewport—not necessarily the whole page—so choose a viewport or element capture based on what needs to appear in the image.
Before automating an exam-results page
Confirm that the page belongs to the relevant exam authority or an authorized results platform. Read that portal’s current notices, terms, and access requirements before running automation. The NIC exam-results platform is maintained by NIC’s e-Counselling Division, MeitY, Government of India; its terms apply to that platform, not automatically to every state board, university, recruitment body, or third-party results site. NIC says its web contents may change without notice, and its terms page was last updated on 16 November 2021. Check the authority for current, authoritative exam information: NIC exam results portal.
Do not try to automate CAPTCHA solving or bypass another access control. Indian government website guidance describes CAPTCHA as a human-access check and discusses alternatives for different sensory modes. If a portal blocks automation, stop and use an authorized human or official route.
What Selenium captures
Viewport screenshot
A normal WebDriver screenshot captures the current visual viewport. It does not guarantee that content below the visible browser area will be included.

Element screenshot
An element screenshot captures the visible region of a selected element’s bounding rectangle after WebDriver scrolls it into view. This can be useful when a result table or notice is the only material you need, but it does not turn a long element into a full-document capture.
Choose the capture for the result
- Use a viewport screenshot when the visible browser view is the intended record.
- Use an element screenshot when one identified result block is sufficient.
- If relevant content extends below the viewport, plan multiple captures or use a separately verified full-page method. Do not assume the standard screenshot method captures the full document.
Set up a Selenium screenshot script
The example below uses Python with Selenium’s Chrome WebDriver. Selenium’s documentation describes WebDriver browser automation and Selenium Manager’s role in managing browsers and drivers for Selenium bindings. Install Selenium in your Python environment, make sure a supported browser is available, and follow Selenium’s current setup guidance if browser or driver management fails: Selenium documentation.
Python: wait for the result table and save a viewport PNG
Replace the example URL and CSS selector with values from the authorized portal. Inspect the page first; there is no universal selector shared by Indian exam-results sites.

driver.quit()Selenium’s Python API specifies a .png file path for save_screenshot(); the method returns False if an I/O error occurs. Checking both the return value and the resulting file helps catch a failed write. The 60-second page-load timeout is a guard against navigation hanging; the 30-second explicit wait is a separate, page-specific readiness check. Adjust these limits to the portal and your environment rather than treating them as universal timing guarantees.
Capture only a result element
Once the element is located and visible, use its screenshot method instead of the driver’s viewport screenshot. Keep the same inspected selector and output checks:

Make the screenshot safe and useful
- Use a predictable filename such as
exam-result.png; avoid putting a candidate’s name, roll number, or other sensitive identifier in the filename. - Share candidate identifiers or result data only when you have authority and a clear need to disclose them.
- Check that the image shows the intended exam, result state, and relevant context before archiving or sharing it.
- Close the browser session after each run with
driver.quit(), including when a wait or screenshot fails.
Troubleshooting
Navigation hangs or times out
set_page_load_timeout() limits how long Selenium waits for navigation. If it expires, confirm the URL and portal availability, then review whether the site is waiting on resources or an access step. Do not interpret a page-load timeout as proof that the result content is ready.
The result selector times out
The portal may have changed its markup, the result may not yet be available, or the page may require an authorized interaction. Reinspect the current page and choose a stable, visible result heading, table, or equivalent signal. No single selector or readiness condition works across all exam sites.
The image is blank or misses the result
Wait for the actual result content rather than relying only on navigation completion. Check that the chosen selector identifies the expected element and that the browser is displaying the intended page. For content below the fold, use planned additional captures or a separately verified full-page approach.

The screenshot file is missing
Confirm the destination directory is writable, use a filename ending in .png, and check the boolean return value from Selenium’s screenshot method as well as whether the file exists.
A CAPTCHA or access control appears
Stop the automation and use the portal’s authorized human or official process. Do not attempt CAPTCHA solving or bypass access controls.

Check that the browser is supported and installed, and consult Selenium’s current setup documentation for the binding and browser in use. Selenium Manager can manage browsers and drivers for Selenium bindings, but local environment and browser setup still matter.
