Use Selenium WebDriver to open the authorized portal page, wait for the specific content you need to appear, and then save a screenshot. In Python, Chromium’s documented screenshot method captures the current window as a PNG; Firefox documents separate methods for full-document screenshots. The exact scope and access rules depend on the browser binding and the portal.
Before automating a government portal
First identify the portal, route, and state you need to capture: the initial page, a page after an allowed interaction, or an error state. Check the service’s current terms and access policy before running automation. There is no single policy that establishes whether automation is permitted on every Indian government service portal.
Use a reproducible browser context. Record the browser and version, viewport dimensions, and any locale or display settings that could affect what appears. These are practical recordkeeping steps, not universal settings prescribed for Indian portals.
Stop when the page presents a CAPTCHA, login challenge, or other human-verification barrier. Use an authorized human workflow or an approved test environment rather than trying to bypass it. GIGW accessibility guidance discusses alternatives for CAPTCHA users; that guidance is not permission to defeat a portal’s verification.

How to take a screenshot of a government website with Selenium
The following Python example shows the essential sequence for a viewport screenshot in Chromium. Replace the example URL and readiness condition with ones appropriate to a portal you are authorized to access. Install Selenium and the browser driver required for your environment before running it.

Choose a selector or text condition tied to the actual page state. The documented Chromium Python current-window API writes a PNG and returns a boolean indicating whether an I/O error occurred.

How to wait for an Indian portal page to finish loading
A navigation reaching the browser’s document-ready state does not guarantee that JavaScript-driven content has appeared or become visible. When capture depends on application content, use an explicit wait for that content’s state rather than assuming navigation alone is sufficient.

- Navigate with
driver.get(url). - Identify a page-specific condition: for example, a result element becoming visible, a loading indicator disappearing, or expected text appearing.
- Wait for that condition with
WebDriverWaitand an expected condition, as in the example. - If the condition times out, inspect the page and locator, and determine whether the portal requires an authorized interaction or human verification. Do not treat a timeout as a reason to bypass a barrier.
Selenium recommends condition-specific explicit waits when the next action depends on a changing page state. Its documentation warns that combining implicit and explicit waits can produce unpredictable timeout behavior; avoid setting both kinds of wait in the same script.

Viewport or full-page screenshot: choose the scope deliberately
driver.save_screenshot("portal-viewport.png") in the Chromium Python example captures the current window. It is not a cross-browser promise of a full-document image. If you need the entire document, confirm that the method is supported by your chosen browser and language binding.
For Firefox’s Python API, Selenium documents driver.get_full_page_screenshot_as_file("portal-full-page.png") as a full-document screenshot method. Do not assume the same method is available through every browser binding. If the full-page call is unsupported, use a documented method for your specific browser and binding rather than silently substituting a viewport image.

Verify and label the captured file
After saving, check that the file exists and visually shows the intended route and page state. A successful save call does not establish that the right content was ready or that the portal permitted the automation.

service-application-viewport.png. - Keep a note of capture time, browser, viewport, route, and whether the image is viewport or full-document.
- For a post-interaction capture, record which authorized interaction led to that state.
Common Selenium screenshot problems
- The screenshot is blank or missing dynamic content: the document may be ready before the application content. Wait for a page-specific element or state, then inspect the saved image.
- The explicit wait times out: verify the URL, selector, and expected state. The element may not exist on that route, may require an authorized interaction, or may be blocked by a human-verification step.
- The image contains only the visible window: the Chromium method shown captures the current window. Use a full-document method documented for the browser and binding you are actually using.
- The full-page method is unavailable: Selenium’s documented Firefox Python full-document method should not be assumed to work in other browser bindings. Check the API for your selected binding.
- Wait timing behaves unpredictably: remove any mixed implicit wait if you are relying on explicit waits, then set a condition-specific wait for the required page state.
- The portal shows CAPTCHA or a login challenge: stop the automated flow and use an authorized human process or approved test environment.
