For a screenshot, automate a browser with Playwright or send the destination URL to a screenshot API. For card text and metadata, use a link-preview or metadata extraction workflow instead. These outputs can be combined, but a preview card does not inherently need both.
Choose between a rendered screenshot and preview metadata
A screenshot captures pixels from the destination page. It is useful when the image itself should show what a visitor would see on that page—for example, a visual thumbnail in a saved-links list. The result is an image file or, depending on the service, a URL to an image.
A metadata-based link preview gives your application data to lay out in its own interface. OpenGraph.io describes its Link Preview API as returning fields including title, description, preview image, domain, favicon and Open Graph metadata, with fallback data when metadata is missing. OpenGraph.io Link Preview API describes this URL-unfurling use case.
- Choose a screenshot when you need the rendered page image.
- Choose metadata extraction when you need structured content for a card you control.
- Use both only when the product genuinely needs both the page image and structured card fields.
Two ways to generate a screenshot automatically
You can run a browser yourself, or delegate capture to a hosted screenshot API. The first approach gives your application direct control of browser automation but makes the browser runtime part of your system. The second accepts a URL and capture settings and returns an image or image location, depending on the service. The documented options and output behavior below are specific to the cited products; check the current documentation and terms before relying on them.

| Approach | What you operate | Documented controls | Output and retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright | Your application operates a browser runtime and saves a screenshot file. | The Page API documents screenshot capture; consult the reference for the options supported by the Playwright version in your project. | The basic documented pattern saves to a path you specify. Your application controls where that file is stored. |
| Screenshot API | A hosted service performs capture in response to a request. | OpenGraph.io documents format, quality, full-page capture, dimensions, selector, exclusions, dark mode, caching, proxy usage, capture delay and navigation timeout. | OpenGraph.io’s cited screenshot documentation says its screenshot URLs expire after 24 hours. Download or cache an image if you need it longer. |
Capture a page with Playwright
Playwright’s Page API documents the core pattern: create a page, navigate to a URL, save a screenshot, and close the browser. See the Playwright Page API for the precise options available in your installed version. This minimal Node.js example uses the library’s browser, page and screenshot APIs; it assumes Playwright is installed and its browser runtime is available.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'preview.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Replace https://example.com with the destination URL and preview.png with the output path your application expects. The example is a basic capture, not a guarantee that every page will be ready, accessible or visually complete when the screenshot is taken. Authentication, bot checks, dynamic content, navigation failures and application-specific readiness conditions need their own handling.
Tailor the capture to the card
Set the capture dimensions and screenshot options deliberately so the image fits the component that will display it. A viewport screenshot represents the visible browser area; a full-page screenshot includes content beyond that viewport where supported. If only a particular region matters, use the version-specific Page API options for element screenshots. Avoid assuming a full-page capture is always the better thumbnail: a long page scaled down to card size may make text and details too small to recognize.

Wait for the page state you need
Navigation completing is not the same as every image, animation or client-rendered component being ready. For a dynamic target, identify a meaningful page state and use the relevant Playwright waiting mechanism before capturing. A fixed delay can be simple but may waste time on fast pages and still be too short on slow ones. Verify the exact waiting and screenshot options against the API reference for your Playwright version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse a hosted screenshot API
A hosted API avoids operating the capture browser in your own application. The cited OpenGraph.io Screenshot API documentation describes a GET request with an encoded target URL and an application ID. It lists controls for image format (JPEG, PNG or WebP), quality, full-page mode, dimensions, CSS selector, exclusions, dark mode, caching, proxy usage, capture delay and navigation timeout. The details apply to that service and can change; confirm its current request syntax, response format, limits and terms before integrating it.
The documentation names thumbnail generation for link previews as one use case. That makes screenshot capture an option for a card’s image, not a substitute for metadata extraction when your interface also needs title, description or other structured fields. It does not establish that every preview needs a screenshot.

Check image lifetime before storing a URL
OpenGraph.io’s cited documentation states that screenshot URLs last 24 hours. If your application needs an image after that period, download it while available and store it in infrastructure you control, or use a cache strategy that meets your retention needs. Do not assume that URL lifetime or retention behavior applies to other screenshot providers; verify each provider’s rules independently.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request with a URL returns a PNG, JPEG or WebP image, or a PDF. Here is a cURL request using the documented endpoint; replace the example URL with the page you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
Options that matter for link-preview images
Before choosing a capture method or configuring a service, map the card’s requirements to actual capture settings. Different providers expose different controls, so treat these as questions to answer in the relevant library or service documentation, not as a universal parameter list.

- Image shape and coverage: Decide whether the card needs a viewport or full-page capture, and choose dimensions that match the display area.
- Format and quality: Select a supported format and quality setting that balances visual clarity with the image size your product can deliver.
- Target area: If a whole page is visually noisy, check whether the tool can capture a CSS selector or exclude specified elements.
- Appearance: Consider whether dark mode is appropriate and whether the target renders differently under that setting.
- Timing: Determine whether a delay or navigation timeout is configurable, and whether the page’s content becomes ready within it.
- Reuse: Check caching behavior and image retention. A cached image can be useful, but its lifetime and invalidation rules are provider-specific.
Reliability, performance and cost decisions
Running the browser yourself
Self-managed capture is a fit when your team wants browser automation inside its own application and can operate the browser runtime. It also means your design must account for browser startup, page navigation, target readiness, output storage and failure handling. The cited Playwright documentation establishes the screenshot mechanism; it does not promise success for every destination or provide a universal production reliability figure.
Delegating to a service
A hosted API delegates the browser capture step, but your implementation still needs to handle request failures, response processing and image retention. Compare only documented behavior that matters to your workflow: supported capture options, response type, URL lifetime, caching and applicable plan or terms. The reviewed sources do not establish a price comparison, comprehensive provider ranking or performance benchmark, so there is no evidence-based basis here for declaring one approach universally cheaper or more reliable.
Keep screenshot capture separate from metadata fetching
If a card needs both a screenshot and metadata, treat them as distinct outputs in your data model. Capture failure should not silently be interpreted as missing metadata, or vice versa. Decide how the interface behaves when either result is unavailable—for example, whether it shows metadata without an image or uses a fallback image—and set retention for any image you store.

Troubleshooting common capture problems
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: The destination may not have rendered the expected content before capture, or a navigation or bot check may have blocked access. Check the page state and capture timing; for a service, inspect its documented response and status information.
- A page is missing content loaded later: Navigation may finish before client-rendered content or images are ready. Wait for a meaningful selector or other readiness condition supported by your browser workflow, rather than assuming the first navigation milestone means visual completeness.
- The screenshot is too tall or too small in the card: Confirm whether the capture covers the viewport or the full page, then match the dimensions and crop/display behavior to your card design.
- A selector capture does not show the intended component: Check that the selector matches an element present on the rendered page and that the element is visible before capture. Provider-specific selector behavior may differ.
- A saved image URL stops working: For OpenGraph.io, the cited screenshot documentation gives screenshot URLs a 24-hour lifetime. Download or cache the image when it is created if the application needs it later.
- The capture request times out: Check the target’s load behavior and the timeout supported by your chosen tool. Longer waits can allow slow pages more time, but they also make each capture take longer; a timeout setting does not make an inaccessible page capturable.
- A card has no title or description even though its screenshot works: Image capture and metadata extraction are separate. Fetch the structured preview data your card needs rather than expecting the screenshot endpoint to provide it.
Implementation checklist
- Decide whether the card needs rendered pixels, structured metadata, or both.
- Choose Playwright if you will run browser automation, or a hosted screenshot API if you want to delegate capture.
- Set dimensions, format, capture area and readiness behavior to match the actual card.
- Plan what the application does when a destination is blocked, blank, slow or missing expected metadata.
- For hosted image URLs, verify the provider’s retention period and store a durable copy if required.
- Check the current API reference, version-specific options, limits and terms before deployment.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take a screenshot of a website from a URL?
Yes. Playwright can navigate a page to a URL and save a screenshot, while a hosted screenshot API can accept a URL and perform the capture. The setup and response differ between those approaches.
Can I capture a full-page screenshot?
It depends on the tool and its supported options. The OpenGraph.io Screenshot API documentation lists full-page mode; consult the Playwright Page API for options supported by the version in your project.
Does a screenshot automatically create a rich link preview?
No. A screenshot is an image. A rich card with fields such as title, description, domain and favicon needs preview metadata as well, whether fetched separately or supplied by a service designed for link previews.
