Use a controlled browser, wait for a known ad state, and save every capture with its test metadata. That produces repeatable evidence of what a page displayed at one moment. It does not, by itself, prove that an impression was viewable for the required duration, served to the intended audience, or free of invalid traffic. This guide shows a defensible screenshot workflow and where instrumented measurement is required.
What screenshot-based ad verification can establish
The Interactive Advertising Bureau defines ad verification as technology intended to ensure ads appear on intended sites and reach the targeted audience (IAB Guidelines for the Conduct of Ad Verification). A screenshot is narrower: it records the rendered pixels available to your controlled browser at a specified time.
Good questions for a capture
- Did the expected creative, text, logo or disclosure appear?
- Was the ad slot blank, collapsed or replaced by an error?
- Is the placement in the expected part of the page?
- Did a test page render the correct campaign variant?
Questions a still image cannot answer
- Whether enough pixels stayed visible for a required continuous interval.
- Whether an impression was delivered to the intended audience or geography.
- Whether traffic was valid, fraudulent or brand-safe.
- Whether a user actually saw or interacted with the ad.
Keep those boundaries in reports. A screenshot is visual evidence, not a standards-compliant measurement record.
Viewability needs time-based instrumentation
Google’s viewability overview summarizes IAB thresholds as 50% of display-ad pixels visible for one continuous second; for display ads larger than 242,000 pixels, 30%; and for in-stream video, 50% for two continuous seconds (Google Ad Manager viewability overview). Those criteria require observing visibility over time.

Google’s Active View methodology monitors position and events such as scrolling, resizing and tab switches, then records viewability with measurement code (Active View methodology). A point-in-time image cannot reconstruct those events. Use platform reporting or an approved verification implementation for viewability, audience, fraud and brand-safety conclusions.
Design the capture specification before writing code
1. State the question and pass condition
Write one test per question—for example, “the 300×250 slot contains the approved creative and disclosure.” Define what counts as pass, fail, timeout and not-testable. A blank page after a timeout must be recorded as a failure state, not silently filed as evidence of a blank ad.
2. Freeze the environment
Record the URL, browser and version, viewport width and height, device emulation (if any), locale, timezone, consent state, logged-in test account and campaign or placement identifier. An emulated handset is not a real handset, and a test page is not proof of live delivery.
3. Choose a meaningful readiness signal
Prefer an ad-slot selector, creative iframe, image URL or known “filled” state. Use a bounded timeout. A short arbitrary sleep is useful only as a fallback for animation; it is not evidence that an ad finished loading.
4. Preserve originals and failures
Save the unaltered PNG or WebP. If you crop or annotate a report image, retain it as a derived file alongside the original. Store timeout, blocked-request and navigation errors with the run rather than omitting the file.

Automate captures with Playwright
The following Node.js example uses Playwright. Install it with npm install playwright and install a browser with npx playwright install chromium. Replace the URL and selector with your test page’s values.

For a slot-only artifact, replace the page screenshot with page.locator(adSelector).screenshot({ path: ... }); keep a full-page original when page context matters.
Handle consent and test state deliberately
Set consent through your approved test mechanism before capture. If authentication is required, use a dedicated test account and an isolated browser context. Do not record unrelated personal data. Keep cookies, headers and user-agent settings in the run record when they affect ad selection.
Frames, lazy loading and rotating creatives
Ads commonly render inside nested iframes. Wait for the iframe or a selector inside its frame rather than assuming the top document contains the creative. For lazy-loaded placements, scroll to the slot before waiting, then document that action. Rotating or personalized creatives make pixel-for-pixel baselines unreliable; compare stable properties such as slot dimensions, disclosure text or an approved asset identifier.
Store evidence that another person can reproduce
Use a stable filename containing a run ID, not a label such as “final.” A sidecar JSON record should include:

- UTC start and finish times.
- URL and campaign, placement or test-case ID.
- Browser name/version, viewport, device emulation, locale and timezone.
- Consent and authentication state identifiers (not raw secrets).
- Readiness selector, timeout values and capture result.
- Original image path, checksum if your retention policy uses one, and any error text.
Apply your organization’s access, retention and privacy rules. Redact or avoid account data that is not relevant to the ad question.
Compare runs without over-interpreting them
A pixel diff is a triage signal. It can flag a missing creative, shifted slot or unexpected overlay, but it can also reflect rotating ads, timestamps, personalization, animation, font differences or a changed consent state. Mask documented dynamic regions, use a fixed viewport and browser build, and require human review for material changes. A visual match still does not establish viewability, audience reach or traffic validity.

The screenshot is blank
Check navigation errors, response status, consent state, ad-blocking extensions and whether the slot is below the fold. Wait for the slot’s actual state or creative asset, not just domcontentloaded. Save the blank result as a failed or inconclusive run with the reason.
The selector times out
Inspect whether the ad is inside an iframe, uses a changing class name or is legitimately unfilled. Prefer a stable data attribute supplied by the test page. If no ad is expected, classify the result as “not filled” rather than “automation error.”
The creative changes between runs
Freeze campaign and account context where possible. Otherwise record the observed creative identifier and compare layout and disclosure requirements instead of raw pixels. Live delivery is naturally variable.

Bot checks or CAPTCHAs appear
Do not try to bypass a challenge in a production verification workflow. Use an authorized test environment or obtain permission from the site and ad platform. Mark the run as blocked; a challenge page is not evidence of ad rendering.
Mobile output does not match a handset
Document that the run used emulation. Differences in hardware, browser, network, app webviews and consent can change delivery. For mobile-app or CTV verification, use the environment’s supported measurement technology rather than treating desktop emulation as equivalent.
Runs are slow or flaky
Reuse a browser process for a batch, cap navigation and selector timeouts, and capture only the required viewport when full-page images are unnecessary. Record every timeout. Retries should have a limit and a new run ID; overwriting a failed artifact hides reliability problems.
When to use instrumented verification instead
IAB Tech Lab describes the Open Measurement SDK as facilitating third-party viewability and verification measurement across web video, mobile apps and connected TV. Its Measurement Pillar page lists OM SDK v1.5 (June 2024); check the current release before implementation (IAB Tech Lab Measurement Pillar). Choose an appropriately accredited or platform-supported measurement workflow when the question involves continuous visibility, audience targeting, invalid traffic, brand safety or cross-environment reporting. Keep screenshots as contextual artifacts, not substitutes for that telemetry.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot prove that an ad was viewable?
No. Viewability depends on visible area over a continuous time interval and is measured with event and measurement code. A screenshot documents only the pixels present when it was taken.
Should I use a full-page image or an element crop?
Use a full-page original when placement context matters, and add a selector crop for focused review. Preserve both and identify the crop as derived evidence.
Is browser automation suitable for mobile-app or CTV ad verification?
Desktop or emulated-browser automation does not represent those environments. Use the platform’s supported instrumentation, such as an appropriate Open Measurement implementation, and retain screenshots only as supplemental context.
