You can automate recurring screenshots with a Playwright script that opens an authorized portal page, waits for a reliable page-specific signal, and saves a timestamped image. Run the script on a scheduler approved for your computer or organization. For pages that require login, first check the current portal terms and your organization’s rules: the official policies reviewed here do not expressly say whether unattended screenshot automation of authenticated pages is permitted.
Check permission and choose what to capture
Start by identifying the exact page and purpose: for example, recording a public notice page or keeping an internal visual record of a page you are authorized to access. Prefer a public page when it meets the need. If a page requires login, review the current portal terms and applicable organizational policy before automating access; do not assume that being able to log in manually means unattended automation is allowed.
The Income Tax Department’s Website Policies prohibit misuse of the portal or its components. Its privacy policy also says users are responsible for keeping login credentials secret, confidential, and secure. The reviewed policy does not specifically decide whether recurring screenshots of authenticated pages are allowed.

CBIC’s GST portal terms caution that website information should not be treated as a statement of law or used for legal purposes, and recommend professional advice where there is ambiguity. The terms do not set a screenshot schedule or specifically resolve automated authenticated access. CBIC’s privacy policy describes the portal’s information handling; it does not establish how long you should retain your screenshots or authorize sending them to a third party.

Choose the capture type
- Viewport screenshot: captures the visible browser area. Use it when the layout or current visible status is what you need to document.
- Full-page screenshot: captures the page’s full scrollable length. Use it when content below the fold matters.
- Element screenshot: captures a particular page element, such as a notice or status panel, when that focused record is sufficient.

Set up a repeatable Playwright capture
The example below uses Node.js and Playwright. It captures a public page without attempting to sign in. Replace the URL and, if appropriate, the readiness check with one suited to a page you are allowed to access. The script uses a fixed viewport and date-based filename so captures are easier to compare and locate.

For example, replace the locator check with await page.locator('YOUR_SELECTOR').waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 15000 }); using a selector you have verified on the page.
Make captures comparable and dependable
Keep the rendering environment steady
Visual differences can result from changes in the page or from changes in the environment that rendered it. Keep the Playwright and browser versions, operating system, viewport dimensions, and relevant settings consistent across runs. A screenshot taken with a different viewport or browser build may not match even if the page itself has not materially changed. Wait for a meaningful completion signal
A fixed delay alone does not prove that a dynamic page has finished loading. Prefer a page-specific selector that appears when the content you need is ready, or another safe and verifiable completion signal. If the portal changes its markup, the selector may stop matching; treat that as a failed capture to investigate rather than saving a screenshot that looks complete but is not.
Use clear filenames and review changes
Use a consistent name that identifies the page and capture time. The ISO timestamp in the example is suitable for sorting, but the machine’s clock and time zone should be managed consistently if exact local-time records matter. If your goal is to detect visual changes, Playwright supports visual assertions with a reviewed baseline; inspect baseline changes before accepting them so a real page change is not silently normalized.

Schedule the script in your approved environment
Run node /absolute/path/to/capture.mjs from the scheduler your operating system or organization already approves. The exact scheduler depends on your environment; the portal policies reviewed here do not prescribe a scheduler, set a recurring interval, or establish that unattended login is permitted. Choose an interval that serves your documentation need and is consistent with the portal’s current terms and your organization’s policy.
Before relying on a schedule, run the command manually under the same account and environment the scheduler will use. Confirm that the resulting file is created where expected, then check the scheduler’s run history for failures. Avoid putting passwords, cookies, session tokens, or complete screenshots into public build logs.

Protect screenshots and credentials
Portal screenshots can contain tax, business, or personal information. Restrict access to the machine or job that creates them and to the destination where they are stored. Apply your organization’s retention policy, and do not send authenticated page contents to a third-party service unless that transfer is permitted and appropriate for the data.
- Keep credentials and session material out of source code, command-line arguments, and logs.
- Limit who can read the screenshot directory and any backups.
- Use an approved storage location and retention period.
- Do not treat a screenshot as a substitute for an official portal record, legal interpretation, or professional tax advice.
Troubleshoot common capture failures
