You can automate scheduled screenshots safely only if the portal permits automation and you authenticate through its supported OTP flow. For a typical Playwright setup, log in once, save the resulting browser state as a protected secret, and load it for later runs while it remains valid. OTP channels, expiry rules, CAPTCHA requirements, and automation policies differ by portal, so there is no universal recipe—and stored state must be treated like a password.
Get approval and confirm the portal’s rules
Before writing a job, obtain approval from the portal owner and check the portal’s terms and access controls. Confirm which pages the job may access, how often it may capture them, how long screenshots may be retained, and whether browser automation is allowed. Use a dedicated, least-privilege account if the portal supports one.
These details cannot be inferred from the fact that a portal is Indian or uses OTP. The Government of India’s GIGW guidance describes multiple authentication patterns, including custom application OTP, Aadhaar-based OTP, and TOTP; it does not establish which one an unnamed portal uses or authorize automation of it. - Use the portal’s real, approved login route. Do not bypass CAPTCHA, evade rate limits, scrape a personal inbox or SMS account, or assume an undocumented API exists.
- If the owner provides an approved API or test environment, consider it instead of automating the browser UI.
- If the portal requires a person to complete an OTP challenge on every run, arrange an approved attended reauthentication process rather than trying to defeat that requirement.
Choose the authentication approach
Use the supported UI flow when no approved API is available
Playwright can interact with a login page and save the authenticated browser context for reuse. The OTP step itself is portal-specific: its channel, field labels, challenge timing, and any extra checks must be confirmed with the portal owner. Do not hard-code assumptions about SMS, email, or a fixed OTP lifetime.

Use an API only when the application supports it
Playwright documents authentication through an API request when an application supports that route. An official, owner-approved API may be more reliable than UI automation, but its existence and authorization are portal-specific. Do not reverse-engineer or invent an API login endpoint.
Reuse state only while policy and expiry allow it
Logging in once and reusing browser state avoids repeating the interactive flow on every scheduled run, but the state can expire or be revoked and is sensitive. Reauthenticating for each run may reduce reliance on a long-lived state file, but it is not appropriate if it requires automating a personal OTP channel or bypassing a portal’s intended human check. Choose based on the portal’s approved method and operational security requirements.

Set up Playwright authentication state
Playwright’s documented pattern is to use a setup project to authenticate once, save state, and make it available to later tests or contexts. The following JavaScript example is a template, not a universal OTP script: adapt the locators and success condition to the authorized portal. It pauses for a human to complete the actual OTP flow, avoiding assumptions about where or how the code is delivered.
- Install Playwright Test: run
npm init playwright@latestin the project and select JavaScript if prompted. The example uses the Playwright Test runner. - Protect the state directory: create
playwright/.authwith permissions restricted to the job account. Addplaywright/.authto.gitignore; never commit a real state file. - Create a setup test: save the following as
tests/auth.setup.js, replacing the example URL and selector with the portal’s approved login page and an authenticated-only element. - Run setup interactively: use
npx playwright test tests/auth.setup.js --headed, complete the portal’s normal login and OTP process in the browser, then press Enter in the terminal. Confirm the authenticated-only selector appears before state is saved. - Load the saved state in the scheduled job: configure the job to use the saved file only if its storage location and access controls meet your security requirements.

});The example deliberately makes the OTP step interactive. An unattended OTP mechanism is suitable only if the portal owner has approved it and provided a supported method. Avoid logging OTP values, cookies, authorization headers, or tokens.

Run a scheduled capture with the saved state
In the scheduled job, create a browser context with the stored state, navigate to the approved page, verify a portal-specific success condition, and then capture. Fail the run rather than saving an image of a login screen or error page.

});Keep scheduling and production operations separate from the screenshot call itself: the job runner must handle timing, output storage, alerts, and classifying success or failure. The example uses Playwright Test for a runnable test project; a production capture can use Playwright’s page screenshot API without treating a screenshot assertion as a scheduler.

Keep the state file secure and refresh it deliberately
Playwright warns: “The browser state file may contain sensitive cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate you or your test account.” Its documentation also says, “We strongly discourage checking them into private or public repositories.” See Playwright authentication.
- Keep the file outside source control and restrict filesystem and job access to the minimum needed.
- Store it in an approved secret store or protected job storage where practical; do not print its contents in logs or expose it in build artifacts.
- Delete or refresh it when it expires, the account is revoked, or the job no longer needs it. Plan for manual reauthentication if the portal requires an interactive OTP again.
- Use the portal owner’s retention and access requirements for captured screenshots as well as for authentication state.
Playwright storage state covers cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkey-based authentication. Session storage is different: Playwright says the usual storageState mechanism does not persist it across page loads, and it is domain-specific. Only add custom session-storage handling if the portal actually depends on it; injecting it into a new context changes how session data is established and should be reviewed with the portal owner.

Make screenshots stable without hiding real failures
Dynamic pages can shift as fonts, images, animations, or live data load. Wait for a portal-specific ready condition before capture; use a fixed delay only when the portal has no better signal and you have verified the trade-off. For a scheduled artifact, capture the page with page.screenshot(). For visual tests, Playwright’s screenshot assertions wait for consecutive screenshots to stabilize before comparing them.
Screenshot assertion options include animation handling, caret visibility, and scaling in CSS or device pixels. Choose settings according to whether the goal is visual comparison or a faithful capture; disabling animation can improve repeatability but may not represent an animated page’s live state. Troubleshoot common failures
- The job is redirected to login or an OTP challenge: the state may have expired, been revoked, or be insufficient for this browser context. Mark the capture failed, alert an operator, and reauthenticate through the approved flow.
- The image shows a login page despite a successful navigation: navigation alone is not proof of authentication. Add a portal-specific authenticated-page assertion and do not save output if it fails.
- The state file cannot be read: check the scheduled job’s file path, service-account permissions, and whether the protected state was provisioned to that environment. Do not solve this by making the file broadly readable.
- The state file exists but the portal behaves as logged out: the portal may depend on session storage, a new challenge, or other portal-specific state. Confirm the behavior with the owner; do not guess at hidden tokens or bypass checks.
- Capture is blank or incomplete: verify the page’s ready condition and the authorized URL, then wait for the relevant content before capturing. Treat portal errors and failed loads as failed jobs, not valid screenshots.
- Screenshots differ between runs: inspect dynamic content and animations. For visual assertions, tune stability, animation, caret, and scale options to the comparison goal; do not suppress differences that matter to the reader.
- OTP attempts trigger blocks or rate limits: stop automated attempts and ask the portal owner for the supported access method and allowed frequency.
