If you do not have access, the supported fallback is to export each Trends chart as CSV and analyze it in a spreadsheet. Google Ads Keyword Planning is a separate route for advertising metrics, not an API for extracting Google Trends data.
Choose the workflow based on the data you actually need: Trends search-interest indices for comparative demand over time, or Google Ads keyword ideas, historical metrics and forecasts for campaign planning.
What “keyword extraction” means in Google Trends
Google Trends does not report an absolute count of searches. It reports search interest: a normalized index showing how popular a query was relative to the selected terms, place and time range. A value of 100 represents the highest relative interest in that result set and period; it is not “100 searches.” Values from separate, independently scaled website requests should not be treated as directly comparable.
This distinction determines whether automation is useful. A script that stores and compares consistently scaled Trends responses can support monitoring and analysis. A script that labels those values as monthly search volume would be misleading.

Google’s July 24, 2025 announcement introduced the Trends API as a limited test and requested developer feedback. The current alpha documentation still asks developers to apply for early access. An application is not a promise of admission or production availability.
Automate Trends with the official API alpha
Check eligibility before writing a client
Apply through Google’s current Google Trends API Alpha page. Plan for an approval step and changing alpha behavior. Do not build a production dependency until your account is actually enabled and the terms and limits supplied to you are clear.
What the alpha documents
- A rolling window of the last 1,800 days, approximately five years.
- Daily, weekly, monthly and yearly aggregation intervals.
- Country and sub-region geographic breakdowns.
- Consistently scaled data that can be joined and compared across requests.
- Comparison of dozens of terms, whereas the Trends website interface permits eight terms in one comparison.
Those are product capabilities, not measurements of market size. The five-year window is rolling, so an older day leaves the available history as new data arrives.
Design a repeatable extraction job
- Define the unit of analysis. Record the exact term or topic, search type, geography, language context, date range and aggregation interval. “apple” as a search term is not automatically equivalent to an Apple topic.
- Keep a request manifest. Store the request timestamp, API version or alpha revision, terms, geography and interval beside every response. This makes later changes auditable.
- Use one consistent comparison set. Since Trends is relative, changing the terms in a request changes the scale. For longitudinal monitoring, keep anchor terms in the same comparison set where the API permits.
- Persist raw responses and normalized tables. Save the original payload, then write a table with date, term, geography, interval and interest value. Never overwrite the raw response when correcting a parser.
- Handle missing and low-interest results explicitly. A zero or absent value can mean insufficient relative interest or no returned observation; it is not proof that nobody searched.
- Schedule conservatively. Respect the alpha’s assigned quotas and retry guidance. Use exponential backoff for transient failures and avoid launching parallel bursts until your access documentation permits them.
Comparing separate requests safely
The website rescales each request from 0 to 100. That makes a value from one website request unsuitable for direct arithmetic against a value from another request. The alpha’s consistently scaled output is intended to make cross-request joins and comparisons more practical, but you must still preserve identical dimensions and document any changed term set, geography or interval.
CSV export: the fallback when API access is unavailable
Google’s documented manual workflow is the dependable option for users who are not admitted to the alpha. Google Trends Help states: “To analyze Trends data further, you can export charts as CSV files.”

- Open Google Trends and enter a term or topic.
- Set the comparison terms, search type, location and date range.
- Choose the chart you need, such as interest over time or interest by sub-region.
- Use the chart’s download control to export a CSV.
- Open the file in a spreadsheet application such as Google Sheets.
- Keep the exported file with a note of the query settings and export date.
CSV export is chart export, not a comprehensive raw-data or guaranteed bulk keyword-list API. For a small recurring report, a human can repeat the sequence and place files in a dated folder. A spreadsheet can then calculate changes, rolling averages and rankings without pretending the index is absolute volume.
Spreadsheet checks that prevent bad conclusions
- Do not combine rows from charts with different comparison sets as though they share one scale.
- Keep dates as dates and preserve the interval (daily, weekly, monthly or yearly).
- Label the source as Google Trends and include the selected geography and search type.
- When publishing the analysis, attribute Trends data to Google and review the applicable Google Terms of Service.
Google Ads Keyword Planning is a different product
Google’s own help says Google Trends is a different data source from Google Ads. Keyword Planning in the Google Ads API can generate keyword ideas and provide historical metrics and forecasts, but those are Ads data and must be labeled that way.
Use Ads Planning when the question is commercial
- Which keyword ideas can support a campaign?
- What historical Ads metrics and forecasts are available?
- Which terms should be evaluated for bidding or targeting?
Use Trends when the question is comparative public interest over time or by place. You may use both in one research project, but store them in separate tables and name the source in every report.
Access, limits and caching
Google Ads API functionality depends on access level and permissible use. Google documents Test, Explorer, Basic and Standard access; some Planning services are unavailable at Explorer level, Basic access has daily operation limits, and Standard access requires an application. Keyword Planning is rate limited. Google recommends caching because responses for an existing-keyword query generally do not change over hours or days, while historical metrics refresh monthly. Confirm the current limits for your account before scheduling jobs.
Building a reliable extraction pipeline
Data model
A useful fact table contains source, term, term_type (search term or topic), geo, date_start, date_end, interval, interest, retrieved_at and request_id. Add a separate metadata record for the query settings. This prevents a future analyst from confusing a Trends index with an Ads metric.

Scheduling and change detection
For a weekly monitor, request a fixed rolling period and compare the newly completed week with prior values from the same series. Flag schema changes, missing dates and unexpected geography labels. Retain failed responses and error messages rather than silently writing zeros.
Cost and quota planning
The Trends alpha’s gating constraint is eligibility and whatever quota Google assigns to your tester account, not a generally published pay-per-call price. CSV export has no API quota but consumes operator time. Ads Planning has its own access and operation limits. Estimate jobs from the number of term sets, geographies and intervals, then test with a small schedule before scaling.

There is no API key or endpoint that works
The alpha is limited access. Apply through Google’s current alpha page and wait for enablement; do not assume an unofficial endpoint is equivalent to the official program.
Two charts produce different-looking values
Check whether the term set, date range, geography, search type or term-versus-topic selection changed. Website charts are independently scaled. Use the alpha’s consistently scaled output for cross-request comparisons when your account has access.
The CSV has zeros or blank-looking rows
Verify the selected place and period, distinguish a low-interest result from a missing observation, and avoid converting either into an absolute search count.

Ads results do not match Trends
That is expected: Ads Keyword Planning and Trends use different data sources and answer different questions. Keep their metrics separate and label them in reports.

An Ads API job is rejected or throttled
Check your access level and permissible use, reduce operation bursts, cache existing-keyword responses and account for the monthly refresh cycle of historical metrics.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an official Google Trends API?
Yes. Google offers a Google Trends API alpha, but access is limited to approved testers and the program is still being developed.
Can I automate CSV downloads from the Trends website?
Google documents chart export to CSV as a manual workflow. It is not documented as a supported bulk automation interface.
