You can automate an Electron app’s renderer UI with Selenium WebDriver by starting a compatible ChromeDriver, connecting Selenium to that server, and setting goog:chromeOptions.binary to the Electron executable under test. The remaining test code uses familiar WebDriver commands for navigation, interaction, waits, and cleanup.
What Selenium needs to connect to an Electron app
Electron’s automated-testing guide says Selenium usage is similar to automating a normal website, with two important setup details: specify how Selenium connects to ChromeDriver and where the Electron binary is located. A regular browser setup may manage a browser and driver for you; this Electron workflow explicitly configures the app executable.
- A compatible ChromeDriver: it must be running and reachable at the server address used in Selenium’s builder.
- The Electron executable: point to the actual executable for the operating system and build you are testing—not merely the enclosing project directory.
- Selectors and expected behavior: WebDriver interacts with the app’s renderer page, so use selectors and assertions that match your application.
The guide’s example uses http://localhost:9515. That is an example address and port, not a requirement; if ChromeDriver listens elsewhere, use its actual address in usingServer().
Install and align the packages
Electron’s guide uses the Node.js packages electron-chromedriver and selenium-webdriver. The Electron-maintained electron/chromedriver repository describes the package as downloading ChromeDriver for Electron and says its major version tracks the Electron major version. Check the current package releases and your project’s Electron version when choosing dependencies; do not copy an old sample version number as a recommendation.

npm install --save-dev electron-chromedriver selenium-webdriver
The Electron guide’s terminal output includes ChromeDriver v2.10.291558, but that is historical sample output, not a current version recommendation. Select a compatible release for the Electron version you actually run.
Start ChromeDriver and connect Selenium
Start the driver
Start the ChromeDriver executable supplied for the Electron-compatible setup and keep that process available while the test runs. Configure it to listen on the address and port you plan to use. Electron’s guide demonstrates port 9515; use the same host and port in Selenium’s builder.
Set the Electron binary in the WebDriver builder
Save this as a Node.js test file, replace the binary path with the executable for your platform and build, and adapt the page URL and selector to your app. The path shown below is intentionally a placeholder and must be replaced before running.

For example, Electron’s guide shows a macOS app executable inside .app/Contents/MacOS/; that layout is not portable to other operating systems or app builds.
const webdriver = require('selenium-webdriver')
async function main() {
const driver = new webdriver.Builder()
.usingServer('http://localhost:9515')
.withCapabilities({
'goog:chromeOptions': {
binary: '/path/to/your/Electron-app-executable'
}
})
.forBrowser('chrome')
.build()
try {
await driver.get('http://example.test')
// Replace this selector and assertion with behavior from your app.
const heading = await driver.findElement(webdriver.By.css('h1'))
console.log(await heading.getText())
} finally {
await driver.quit()
}
}
main().catch((error) => {
console.error(error)
process.exitCode = 1
})
In this illustrative flow, driver.get() loads the page being tested, WebDriver locates and reads a renderer element, and driver.quit() closes the WebDriver session even if an assertion or interaction fails. For a real app, use its own launch behavior, URL or initial state, selectors, and assertions.
Write reliable renderer tests
Wait for state, not a guessed delay
Electron pages may take time to render or load data. Prefer waiting for the condition the test needs instead of assuming a fixed pause is always sufficient. For example, wait until a target element is visible before reading it:

const { By, until } = require('selenium-webdriver')
const button = await driver.wait(
until.elementLocated(By.css('[data-testid="save"]')),
10000
)
await driver.wait(until.elementIsVisible(button), 10000)
await button.click()
Choose a timeout appropriate to the test environment and fail with a useful message if the expected state never appears. Avoid using a wait as a substitute for checking that the app reached the correct state.
Keep setup, test, and teardown predictable
- Use a dedicated test build and a known initial state where possible.
- Prefer stable app-owned selectors such as test IDs over text or styling classes that change frequently.
- Keep the ChromeDriver server address, executable path, and app build explicit in test configuration.
- Always end the session with
driver.quit(), including on failure, so later tests are not left with an open session.
Version, port, and Selenium Manager caveats
Selenium’s documentation describes WebDriver as its browser automation interface and Selenium Manager as a command-line tool that provides automated driver and browser management for Selenium bindings. Electron’s guide separately calls for an Electron binary and Electron-oriented ChromeDriver. The documented material does not establish that Selenium Manager automatically resolves Electron/ChromeDriver compatibility or launches the Electron app, so retain the explicit Electron configuration unless your own setup verifies otherwise.

Likewise, Electron’s guide notes that .forBrowser('electron') applied only to selenium-webdriver versions at or below 3.6.0. Treat that as historical compatibility information, not current syntax guidance. Follow the API for the version installed in your project; the example above uses .forBrowser('chrome') with the Electron binary capability.

Troubleshoot common connection and test failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Selenium cannot connect or the session cannot be created | ChromeDriver is not running, or Selenium is using a different address or port. | Confirm the driver process is active and that its listening host and port match usingServer(). The guide’s localhost:9515 is only an example. |
| The driver starts but cannot launch the app | The binary path is wrong, points to a directory, or belongs to a different app build or operating system. | Use the actual Electron executable path for the build under test. Do not copy the guide’s macOS path as a universal path. |
| Session creation fails after changing Electron versions | The ChromeDriver package may not match the Electron release. | Check the project’s Electron version against the current electron-chromedriver release guidance; its major version tracks Electron’s major version. |
| An element lookup fails immediately | The renderer has not reached the expected state, or the selector does not match the app. | Verify the selector in the rendered app and wait for the needed element or state before interacting. |
| A test passes locally but fails in CI | The CI environment may use a different executable path, build, driver address, or timing conditions. | Make those values explicit in CI configuration and wait for observable application conditions rather than relying on local timing. |
When another Electron testing framework may fit better
Selenium is a reasonable choice when the test primarily needs WebDriver-style interaction with the renderer and the team can maintain the ChromeDriver and binary configuration. Electron’s testing guide also documents other options:
| Framework | Documented Electron-specific capability or status | Consider it when |
|---|---|---|
| Selenium WebDriver | The guide shows explicit ChromeDriver connection and Electron binary configuration. | Your suite already uses Selenium or mainly tests renderer UI through WebDriver. |
| WebdriverIO | Electron’s guide describes launching and shutting down the application and exposing Electron APIs to tests. | Your tests need app lifecycle handling or Electron APIs in addition to renderer interaction. |
| Playwright | Electron’s guide describes its Electron support as experimental and says it uses Electron’s Chrome DevTools Protocol support. | You are evaluating its current support status and can accept an experimental Electron integration. |
Spectron is legacy context rather than a good default for a new suite: its repository is marked deprecated. Teams maintaining an existing Spectron suite may need to plan a migration, but new work should choose a currently supported approach.
