Browser automation can move data between web applications when you must work through their interfaces, but Selenium, Playwright, Puppeteer and ChromeDriver are automation tools—not turnkey migration systems. Use them to read, enter and submit records; design the field mapping, duplicate rules, validation, retry handling and rollback around the specific applications yourself. Check for a supported API, export/import feature or connector first, then pilot the browser workflow on a small, representative set of records.
When browser automation is the right migration path
Start by checking whether the source or destination provides an API, export, import or supported connector. Those paths may offer a more direct way to transfer structured data. Browser automation is a practical fallback when those options are unavailable or do not meet the need, and an application requires interaction through its web interface.
A browser script can operate controls much like a user: open a record, read visible or accessible fields, navigate forms, enter values and submit changes. It does not automatically know how source fields correspond to destination fields, how to handle duplicates, or whether a submitted record was saved correctly. Those are migration-specific engineering decisions, not capabilities guaranteed by a browser framework.
Choose an automation tool for your constraints
Choose based on browser coverage, the languages and test framework your team already uses, local versus remote execution, version control, and whether you need to attach to an existing authenticated browser. The official documentation describes browser automation and testing capabilities; it does not establish which tool is fastest or most reliable for migrations.

Selenium’s documentation also describes WebDriver BiDi as the W3C standard bidirectional protocol for browser automation, created by the Selenium project together with browser vendors. See Selenium WebDriver. Chrome’s automation ecosystem includes Chrome for Testing, ChromeDriver, Puppeteer and headless Chrome; the Chrome DevTools Protocol reference documents CDP.
Design the migration before automating clicks
Define the data contract
- List the source fields, destination fields, transformations, required values and any format conversions.
- Decide how duplicates are detected and whether an existing destination record is skipped, updated or treated as an exception.
- Specify how relationships, attachments, optional fields and records that cannot be mapped should be handled.
- Choose a stable record identifier so each attempted item can be traced and safely retried.
Pilot with representative records
Select a small sample that includes ordinary records and meaningful edge cases: missing optional values, long text, special characters, duplicate candidates or unusual relationships. Run the complete read-map-write-verify path and inspect the destination manually before increasing volume. The browser-framework documentation does not prescribe a migration pilot; this is a way to expose application-specific behavior before a large write.

Keep an attempt ledger
Record each source identifier, attempt status, destination identifier when available, timestamps and error category. Make retries idempotent where possible: before creating a destination record, check whether a prior attempt already created it. A browser timeout after clicking Submit does not prove the application rejected the request; blindly repeating it could create duplicates.
Implement a controlled browser workflow
The exact selectors, page routes and save signals depend on the applications being migrated, so there is no universal runnable script that can safely operate on arbitrary source and destination sites. Structure the implementation into application-specific functions and keep mapping and verification explicit.

- Prepare an isolated environment. Use a dedicated browser profile and least-privilege account. Keep credentials out of source code and logs.
- Stabilize the browser runtime. Pin the browser build and compatible driver or framework version when repeatability matters. Chrome for Testing publishes versioned binaries and matching ChromeDriver releases.
- Read and normalize. Navigate to one source record, wait for the relevant fields, extract values, and convert them according to the mapping rules.
- Check destination state. Search by the chosen stable key and apply the declared duplicate behavior before creating or updating anything.
- Write and confirm. Fill the destination fields, submit, then wait for an application-specific success signal such as a saved record identifier or a visible updated value—not merely the disappearance of a spinner.
- Persist the result. Write a success or exception to the attempt ledger before moving on, so a stopped run can resume deliberately.
- Reconcile. Compare source and destination counts and perform application-specific field checks. Keep an exception report and a rollback or recovery plan before processing large batches.
With Selenium, the shared WebDriver interface is useful when browser interoperability or Grid allocation is central. With a Chrome-focused stack, ChromeDriver and a pinned Chrome for Testing build make the browser/driver pairing explicit. Puppeteer is a JavaScript option for Chrome control. Playwright can launch its own browser or attach to Chromium through CDP, but its documentation qualifies CDP attachment as lower fidelity than its own protocol.
Protect credentials and session data
Do not treat an authenticated browser profile as a harmless convenience. Google Chrome for Developers states that, when auto-connect is active, an agent has access to all data in the browser profile, including open tabs, session storage, local storage, cookies and other data exposed through JavaScript APIs. That warning concerns access to the connected profile and is relevant when choosing how automation obtains a session. Chrome auto-connect documentation

- Use a separate profile and a restricted account rather than a staff member’s everyday browser profile.
- Limit access to session tokens, cookies, downloaded files, traces, screenshots and logs; retain artifacts only as long as needed.
- Store secrets in an appropriate secret store or protected runtime configuration, not in scripts or diagnostic output.
- Review where browser automation and its artifacts run, especially if execution is remote or connected to an agent or service.
Chrome’s documentation says its local auto-connect server does not send browser data, session tokens or telemetry to Google. That statement is specific to that feature and should not be generalized to other agents, services or deployment setups.

Browser automation can fail for reasons unrelated to the data itself: changed page structure, delayed rendering, expired sessions, validation errors, navigation interruptions or transient network problems. Classify failures and make the next action explicit rather than retrying every operation in the same way.

Browser-driven migration is generally constrained by page load and interaction cycles, and a portal may rate-limit or restrict repeated actions. No migration-specific throughput, success-rate, time-saving or cost benchmark is established by the cited browser documentation. Start conservatively, measure the actual application workflow, and increase concurrency only after verifying that the applications tolerate it and that records remain reconcilable. Selenium Grid can allocate browsers across machines, but distributing execution does not itself solve duplicate writes or correctness.
