You can automate Chrome without Selenium using Playwright, Puppeteer, or a client for Chrome’s DevTools Protocol (CDP). For most new end-to-end test suites, start with Playwright; for a JavaScript project focused on browser control, consider Puppeteer; use CDP directly when you need protocol-level control and are prepared to manage more of the setup yourself.
Choose the right Selenium alternative
The best fit depends on whether you need a test framework, a browser-control library, or direct access to Chrome’s protocol. No independent performance benchmark is established here, so treat the choice as a difference in features and setup—not a speed ranking.
| Need | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| End-to-end test suite, possibly across browsers | Playwright | Playwright Test includes a runner, assertions, isolation, parallelization, and tooling, and supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. Playwright documentation |
| JavaScript browser control with a Chrome emphasis | Puppeteer | It offers a high-level API for browser tasks and supports CDP as well as WebDriver BiDi. Puppeteer documentation |
| Custom tooling, debugging, or protocol-level access | CDP client | CDP exposes Chrome’s remote debugging protocol, but you take responsibility for browser startup, the connection, and lower-level commands. Chrome DevTools Protocol |
| Tests must use branded Google Chrome | Playwright with a supported Chrome channel, or a Puppeteer setup configured for Chrome | Playwright distinguishes its supported Chromium build from branded Chrome channels. Automate Chrome with Playwright
Playwright is the most complete starting point when you want browser automation and test infrastructure together. Its core browser automation is available for JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java, and .NET, though the test-runner integration differs by language. The example below uses JavaScript with Playwright Test.
Install the test runner and Chromium
- Install a current Node.js release supported by your project.
- In a new project directory, run
npm init playwright@latestand follow the prompts. Select JavaScript or TypeScript and allow the installer to install browsers if prompted. - To install Playwright’s supported browser binaries separately, run
npx playwright install. On Linux CI systems that need browser dependencies too, consult the current installation guidance for the appropriate system-dependency command. - Create or edit a test file such as
tests/homepage.spec.js.
Write and run a browser test
const { test, expect } = require('@playwright/test');
test('homepage has a title and a working navigation link', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveTitle(/Example Domain/);
await page.getByRole('link', { name: 'More information...' }).click();
await expect(page).toHaveURL(/iana.org/);
});
Run the test with npx playwright test. Playwright Test runs headless by default in typical test configurations. To watch a run in a visible browser, use npx playwright test --headed; to step through a test interactively, use npx playwright test --debug. These commands depend on the Playwright Test runner being installed in the project.

Use branded Chrome instead of bundled Chromium
Playwright normally launches its supported Chromium build. To target installed Google Chrome, configure a browser project with the documented chrome channel:
const { defineConfig } = require('@playwright/test');
module.exports = defineConfig({
projects: [
{
name: 'google-chrome',
use: { browserName: 'chromium', channel: 'chrome' },
},
],
});
Use the bundled build when you want a browser version supported and managed alongside Playwright. Choose branded Chrome when matching the Chrome version people receive, or when Chrome-specific codecs or enterprise policies matter. Compatibility with an arbitrary Chrome executable is not guaranteed; prefer documented channels and supported versions. After updating Playwright, run its browser installation command as needed so the browser binaries stay aligned with the package version. See Playwright’s browser and channel guidance.
When Playwright fits
- You need a maintainable end-to-end suite rather than isolated browser scripts.
- You want built-in test organization, assertions, isolation, parallelization, and tooling.
- You may need Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit coverage—not just Chrome.
- You need Java, Python, or .NET automation, as well as JavaScript/TypeScript.
Automate Chrome with Puppeteer
Puppeteer is a JavaScript library for browser control. Its documented uses include navigation, DOM interaction, clicking and typing, network interception, screenshots, PDFs, and UI testing. It communicates through CDP or WebDriver BiDi; it is not limited to CDP. The default installation downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing binary, which can make the browser setup reproducible. Puppeteer overview
Install Puppeteer
In a Node.js project, install the package:
npm install puppeteer
Then save this as shot.js and run node shot.js. It opens a page, checks its title, saves a screenshot, and closes the browser even if an error occurs.
Recommended Free Tools
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
console.log(await page.title());
await page.screenshot({ path: 'example.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
For interaction, locate a page element and use Puppeteer’s page APIs to click or type. For reliable scripts, wait for the relevant navigation or element state rather than assuming a fixed sleep will fit every page. Consult the current API documentation for selectors and wait conditions.

When Puppeteer fits
- Your automation is JavaScript/Node-focused and centered on Chrome tasks.
- You need a browser library, not a full test framework with cross-browser projects.
- You want a high-level API but may need CDP or WebDriver BiDi capabilities underneath.
If Chrome does not download during installation, check the current Puppeteer installation guidance. Package-manager settings that disable install scripts can interfere with the browser download. Puppeteer installation guide
Control Chrome through CDP directly
CDP is Chrome’s remote debugging protocol for instrumenting, inspecting, debugging, and profiling Chromium-based browsers. It is appropriate when a tool specifically needs protocol commands, but it is a lower-level route than Playwright or Puppeteer. A CDP client does not necessarily launch Chrome for you: Chrome must be started with remote debugging enabled, the client must connect to its debugging endpoint, and your application must manage browser and connection lifecycle. CDP documentation and Chrome remote debugging guide
For a JavaScript example, Chrome’s guide identifies chrome-remote-interface as a lower-level client. Because the client does not launch Chrome on its own, first start a separate Chrome process with remote debugging configured, then connect to the endpoint and issue the protocol commands you need. Follow the current client and Chrome documentation for startup flags and connection details rather than copying an unverified command into a production environment. chrome-remote-interface

Understand Chrome, Chromium, headless mode, and ChromeDriver
Chromium is not always the same test target as Google Chrome
Playwright’s bundled Chromium is tied to Playwright releases and may be ahead of the current public Chrome version. That can help expose upcoming browser behavior, but it may not reproduce the installed Chrome your users run. Use a supported branded channel when the distinction matters, and keep the Playwright package and browser installation aligned. Playwright browser documentation

Headless is a mode, not an automation library
Chrome’s modern headless mode uses the same browser implementation as headful Chrome, but headless mode does not itself provide a high-level API for navigating pages, filling forms, or asserting results. Pair Chrome with a controller such as Playwright or Puppeteer for page workflows. Chrome Headless documentation
ChromeDriver still belongs to the WebDriver path
ChromeDriver implements WebDriver and WebDriver BiDi and acts as a bridge for WebDriver-based frameworks. It is part of Chrome automation, but choosing it as the core path does not meet a requirement to avoid WebDriver-based tooling. ChromeDriver documentation

Automate a screenshot without launching a browser yourself
If your task is specifically to capture a webpage image or PDF—not to run a full interactive browser workflow—you can call a screenshot API instead of installing and managing Chrome. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output. The cURL example below saves a WebP screenshot of a page:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and request options. The response includes X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. It can accept a cookie or consent banner like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. It is not a replacement for browser automation that must click through a custom workflow, test application state, or perform arbitrary interactions.
ScreenshotNeo’s listed monthly plans are Free: 1,000 screenshots with no card; Starter: $5 for 3,000; Growth: $15 for 15,000; Pro: $39 for 60,000; Scale: $99 for 250,000; and Business: $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is on every plan.
Or skip the browser setup: use the one-call API request above. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card, with paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000. Playwright says the browser executable is missing
The Playwright package and its browser binaries may be out of sync, or the browser installation step may not have run. Run npx playwright install after installing or updating Playwright. In Linux CI, consult Playwright’s current browser installation instructions for required system dependencies.

The test opens Chromium, but you need Google Chrome
Playwright targets its supported Chromium build by default. Configure the documented chrome channel for branded Chrome and ensure Chrome is available in the environment. Do not assume an arbitrary executable is compatible; use supported channel and version guidance.
Puppeteer installs, but Chrome is absent
Its compatible Chrome for Testing download may have been blocked by package-manager settings that suppress install scripts or by the environment’s network restrictions. Check the install-script policy and follow the current Puppeteer installation guide for the setup that matches your package manager.
The browser launches but the page is not ready
Navigation completion does not guarantee that every application element or asynchronous request is ready. Wait for the specific selector or page state your task needs, and assert that state before interacting. Avoid treating an arbitrary fixed delay as a reliable synchronization method.
A CDP client cannot connect
Confirm that Chrome was started with remote debugging enabled, that the client is using the correct debugging endpoint, and that the endpoint is reachable from the process running the client. CDP clients that do not launch Chrome require a separate browser-startup step.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
Keep the browser version decision explicit in CI. A bundled supported Chromium build can make the test target consistent with the Playwright release; branded Chrome is the better choice when the behavior of the public Chrome channel is the thing being validated. Reinstall or update browser binaries as required when Playwright changes. For Puppeteer, its compatible Chrome for Testing download offers a reproducible starting point, subject to package-manager install settings.

Choose headless or headed execution based on the need: headless is suitable for unattended runs, while headed and debug modes help inspect failures interactively. The available sources do not establish that one framework is universally faster, more reliable, or cheaper. Actual resource use and runtime depend on the pages, test design, browser version, concurrency, and execution environment; measure those in your own workload rather than relying on a generic ranking.
Also distinguish a browser workflow from a screenshot request. Frameworks let code navigate, interact, inspect, and assert; a screenshot endpoint is a narrower service for producing captures without owning Chrome’s lifecycle. Pick the smallest tool that does the job while retaining the control your task requires.
