To stream a playlist of videos through OBS, add local files to OBS’s VLC Video source, choose whether to loop or shuffle them, schedule a YouTube broadcast in Live Control Room, and connect OBS using the stream URL and key. These are separate setups: an OBS media playlist is not a YouTube playlist, and the documented workflow does not automatically import or synchronize videos hosted in a YouTube playlist.

The same general YouTube and OBS workflow applies to creators in India; the official instructions do not specify a separate India-only setup. This guide covers a manually scheduled stream first, then explains the APIs and cloud option for deeper automation.

What “automate a YouTube live playlist” means

There are three different operations that are easy to conflate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Playlist playback: OBS plays a sequence of media files as part of the outgoing video feed.
  • Broadcast scheduling: YouTube creates a live event with its own title, privacy setting, and scheduled time.
  • Control automation: an API or external tool can manage broadcasts, scenes, and sources.

For the straightforward workflow, you create the media playlist in OBS and schedule the broadcast separately in YouTube Studio. OBS sends the encoded feed; YouTube hosts the live event. YouTube’s own playlists are managed separately, and the documented OBS workflow does not show a built-in feature that automatically fetches and follows one.

Check channel eligibility before you schedule

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube Help says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it well before the event rather than waiting until stream day. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance and encoder streaming instructions.

The cited YouTube and OBS instructions are general documentation, not India-specific network or service guidance. They do not establish local internet-speed, power-reliability, or availability guarantees.

Prepare the files and playlist in OBS

Install VLC for a multi-file playlist

OBS’s VLC Video source is the option for a playlist of local media files. Install the VLC application first; OBS needs it for the VLC Video source to appear. Match the VLC architecture to OBS: for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS’s Media Sources guide describes supported sources and playback behavior.

Add files and select playback behavior

  1. In OBS, select the scene that should show the playlist.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video. If it is missing, install the matching VLC version and reopen OBS.
  3. Open the source properties and add the local video files to its playlist. Arrange them in the desired order.
  4. Choose Loop if the playlist should repeat, or Shuffle if it should play in a different order. These are media-playback settings; they do not schedule or restart a YouTube event.
  5. Check the preview and audio levels, then test transitions between files before going live.

For one file rather than a playlist, OBS’s Media Source can play a local file and loop it. OBS lists common local audio and video formats in its Media Sources documentation.

Schedule the YouTube live event

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to enter the Live Control Room.
  2. Open the Manage tab and choose to schedule a stream. Add the title, description, visibility, and planned start time; review the event details before saving.
  3. When appropriate, reuse settings from a previous stream or create a new stream. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe these options.
  4. Use the event’s stream settings to obtain the stream URL and stream key for the encoder connection.

A scheduled event can appear to subscribers as upcoming, and viewers may be able to select Notify me. Scheduling the event does not itself make OBS start sending video at the scheduled time: the encoder feed still has to be sent. See YouTube’s guidance on scheduling a live stream.

Connect OBS and start the broadcast

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Stream.
  2. Choose YouTube as the service. Depending on the available connection option, connect your account or select the option to use a stream key.
  3. If entering details manually, copy the stream URL and stream key from the scheduled event into OBS. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with someone who should not control your broadcast.
  4. Select Apply and OK, then verify that the intended scene and VLC playlist are active.
  5. At the planned time, start streaming from OBS so it sends the encoder feed. Check the Live Control Room to confirm YouTube is receiving it, then start the event there if required by the event’s controls.

If a stream key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement. A scheduled event and a connected encoder are distinct parts of the workflow; confirm both before relying on a start time.

What can be automated beyond playlist playback?

Schedule broadcasts through the YouTube Live Streaming API

For software that needs to create or manage scheduled broadcasts, Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API provides broadcast and stream resources. Its recurring-broadcast pattern can bind one liveStream resource to scheduled liveBroadcast resources. This is API-level event management; it does not mean OBS automatically finds a YouTube-hosted playlist and plays it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google describes the distinction this way: “A stream enables you to transmit audio-video content to YouTube, and it defines the settings for how you stream your content.” See the API documentation on broadcasts and streams.

Control OBS scenes and sources externally

OBS WebSocket allows external tools to control scenes and sources. It has been included in OBS Studio 28 and later. Enable authentication and protect its credentials; exposing an unauthenticated control interface can let others operate OBS. See the OBS remote-control guide.

Copyright and playback checks before going live

  • Confirm you have the rights or permissions needed for every video and audio track in the playlist. The fact that a file plays in OBS does not establish permission to broadcast it.
  • Check the order, loop or shuffle setting, audio levels, and transitions in a private test or other appropriate test setup.
  • Keep the stream key private and secure OBS WebSocket authentication if you enable remote control.
  • Do not assume that an OBS playlist is a YouTube playlist or that videos hosted on YouTube will be imported into OBS automatically.

Troubleshooting common setup problems

Problem Likely cause What to do
VLC Video is missing from OBS sources VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC for the same architecture as OBS (64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC), then reopen OBS.
The playlist does not advance or repeat as expected The wrong source or playback option is being used, or the files are not arranged as intended. Use VLC Video for multiple files; inspect its playlist, ordering, and loop or shuffle options. For one file, use Media Source and its loop setting.
YouTube does not show an incoming feed OBS has not started sending, or the stream URL/key is wrong or belongs to a different event. Compare OBS’s stream settings with the selected event in Live Control Room. If the key was exposed, reset it and update OBS.
Live streaming is unavailable on the channel The channel may not be verified, may have a recent restriction, or first-time enablement may still be processing. Check YouTube’s eligibility requirements and enable streaming in advance; first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
The scheduled event exists but does not go live by itself Scheduling the YouTube event does not start the OBS encoder feed. Start streaming from OBS and verify feed reception in Live Control Room; follow the event controls to start the event if required.
