YouTube Studio lets you create playlists and reorder videos, but its documented features do not include a native weekly recurring playlist-rotation setting. For a small lineup, update the playlist manually on a weekly routine. For automatic changes, use an external scheduler to run authorized YouTube Data API playlist-item operations. First decide whether “radio” means a playlist viewers play themselves or a continuous live broadcast: those are different workflows.
Choose the workflow that matches your “radio” channel
| Option | Automation | Setup effort | Can set exact playlist order? | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual playlist editing in Studio | None; a person updates it weekly | Low | Yes, by choosing manual sorting and dragging videos | A small or occasional rotation |
| External scheduler plus YouTube Data API | Recurring job runs the update | Higher; requires authorized credentials and a scheduler you configure | Yes, when the playlist uses manual sorting | A playlist that must change on a predictable weekly schedule |
| Scheduled video publishing | Publishes an individual private upload at a selected time | Low to moderate | No; publishing a video does not reorder an existing playlist | A release calendar, not playlist rotation |
| Scheduled live broadcast | Schedules a broadcast workflow in YouTube Studio | Moderate; encoder streams use a stream URL and key | No; a broadcast is not a playlist edit | A channel that means a live broadcast by “radio” |
YouTube’s scheduled video publication and scheduled live-stream workflows are separate from playlist rotation. The guidance and documented features described here were checked against YouTube Help and Google for Developers documentation on October 3, 2026; interface labels and API requirements can change.
Update the playlist manually in YouTube Studio
This is the simplest approach when a person can make the weekly change. YouTube Studio supports creating playlists, choosing their arrangement, editing visibility, and sorting videos by dragging them. The exact labels may shift as Studio changes.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Content, then Playlists. Create a playlist if you do not already have one for the radio lineup, or open the existing playlist.
- Add the videos for the coming week. Decide whether the rotation replaces the whole lineup or changes only selected entries. Check that each intended video is available to viewers.
- Set the playlist’s arrangement to manual sorting. This lets you control the sequence rather than relying on another arrangement.
- Drag videos into the intended play order. Check the beginning, transitions, and end of the lineup. If the list is meant to loop, make sure the ending leads sensibly back to the start.
- Review visibility and save the change. Confirm the playlist is visible to the audience you intend, then view it as a viewer to verify the resulting order.
- Repeat on a stable weekly day and time. Tell viewers about schedule changes if they rely on a predictable lineup. YouTube’s creator guidance recommends a consistent, sustainable schedule and communicating changes.
Automate playlist changes with an external scheduler and the Data API
Google’s YouTube Data API documents operations for inserting playlist items and updating their positions. Combined with a separate scheduler, those operations can support a recurring weekly job. This is an implementation approach inferred from the documented API capabilities—not a turnkey weekly scheduler supplied by YouTube, nor a tested recipe endorsed by YouTube.

Plan the rotation before connecting an account
- Define the target lineup. Keep a weekly schedule or data file that identifies the playlist and the video IDs in the desired order.
- Choose the rotation rule. Decide whether each run replaces the lineup, reorders existing entries, or changes only a subset. Specify how the job should handle a video that is unavailable or no longer accessible.
- Choose a stable run time and time zone. Make the schedule explicit so a daylight-saving change or a server’s default time zone does not silently shift the update.
- Use a dedicated test playlist first. Log the target playlist and intended item positions, then verify the result before allowing the job to modify the production playlist.
Build the recurring job
- Set up an external scheduler. Choose a service or scheduled task that can run on your preferred weekly day and time. The scheduler is a separate component; YouTube’s API does not supply this recurring trigger.
- Authorize the job for playlist writes. Playlist insertion and position changes are write operations, so the job needs authorized credentials with suitable permissions for the channel. Keep credentials out of public code and logs, and make sure the account can access the target playlist.
- Fetch and reconcile the current playlist items. Compare the current entries with the intended lineup. Decide how the job should treat duplicates, removed videos, unavailable items, and entries added manually since the previous run.
- Insert or reposition items using the API. Use the documented playlist-item operations to add entries or update their positions. For exact position updates, configure the playlist for manual sorting; an API position change can fail if the playlist or item is unsupported or the authorization is insufficient.
- Run a dry run before enabling writes. Have the job report the playlist it would change and the intended positions without modifying anything. Compare that report with your schedule.
- Test against the test playlist, then enable production changes. Verify the resulting order in Studio and on the viewer-facing playlist. Retain logs sufficient to diagnose a failed run, but do not expose credentials.
- Monitor each weekly run. Record success or failure and alert a responsible person when the job cannot access an item, lacks permission, or receives an unsupported-operation error. A scheduler that fails silently can leave last week’s lineup in place.
For maintainability, keep the schedule separate from the code that performs API calls, and make the job safe to rerun: a retry should not create unintended duplicates or scramble the order. Confirm current API permissions and supported playlist behavior before deploying, because those details can change.
When scheduled publishing is the right tool
YouTube’s scheduled publishing feature schedules a private video to become public at a selected date, time, and time zone. It can support a release calendar—for example, publishing a new program before a weekly playlist update—but it does not rotate entries in an existing playlist. YouTube Help notes that the publication date shown on the watch page follows Pacific Standard Time, which may differ from the time zone used to schedule the release.

When you mean a continuous live broadcast
If “radio” means a live broadcast rather than a playlist viewers start themselves, use YouTube Studio’s live-stream workflow instead of treating playlist edits as a broadcast scheduler. For an encoder stream, YouTube provides a stream URL and key. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Scheduling a broadcast and changing the order of a playlist remain separate tasks.
Keep the weekly rotation dependable
- Set a sustainable cadence. Pick a weekly update time you can maintain, and communicate changes to viewers who expect a regular lineup.
- Make the change easy to audit. Keep the intended order somewhere clear and log what the automated job plans to do before it changes the playlist.
- Plan for unavailable videos. Choose in advance whether to skip an unavailable item, retain the existing lineup, or require a person to review the run. Do not let an error produce an unreviewed partial rotation.
- Keep rights and platform rules in view. Only use content you have the rights to stream or otherwise make available. A playlist or continuous broadcast does not make copyrighted material permissible, and playlist rotation alone does not establish compliance with YouTube policies.
- Do not confuse a series playlist with rotation automation. YouTube’s series playlist feature identifies videos intended to be viewed together; it is not a recurring rotation scheduler. YouTube states that series playlists require a verified account, a video can appear in only one series playlist, and only videos uploaded by the creator and rights-cleared by them can be included.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your real goal is to keep a YouTube radio broadcast running from uploaded videos, rather than merely reorder a playlist, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams what you uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This keeps an uploaded-video live stream running; it does not automate weekly edits to a YouTube Studio playlist. Frequently Asked Questions
Can a YouTube series playlist rotate videos automatically every week?
No. The series playlist feature identifies a set of videos intended to be viewed together; it is not a recurring rotation scheduler.
Does changing playlist order make a YouTube video publish at a scheduled time?
No. Playlist order and scheduled publication are separate: scheduled publishing makes a private upload public at its chosen time, while playlist editing changes the lineup.
