You can automate a daily change to a YouTube satsang playlist with a scheduled script that uses the YouTube Data API. YouTube Studio supports manual playlist edits, but its video scheduling feature schedules publication—not playlist membership or ordering. An automated workflow therefore needs three parts: a rule for which satsang video to change, an authorized API script, and a separate scheduler to run it.
Decide what should change each day
“Change the playlist” can mean several different things. Choose the desired outcome before writing or configuring automation: the API provides separate operations rather than one daily-playlist switch.
- Add today’s satsang: insert a video into the target playlist, perhaps at the end or in a chosen position.
- Remove yesterday’s satsang: delete that playlist entry while leaving the video itself on YouTube.
- Move a video: update its position in the playlist. Position changes require the playlist’s ordering to be set to Manual.
- Keep an archive: add the new satsang but retain older entries, rather than removing them automatically.
Decide whether the playlist should remain a stable, shareable destination. In most cases, updating one existing playlist is simpler for viewers than creating a new playlist every day.
Choose manual edits or automation

YouTube’s documented scheduled-publishing feature is for making a private video public at a chosen time; it is not documented as a scheduler for playlist membership or order. The API supplies playlist-item operations, but the schedule, monitoring, and fallback are implementation choices you must provide.

Set up a daily API workflow
1. Define the selection and playlist rule
Specify how the job determines which video is “today’s satsang”—for example, from a reviewed list or a consistent naming or metadata rule—and what should happen to prior items. Decide whether to append, remove a particular older entry, or place the new entry at a specific position. Include a rule for what to do when there is no eligible video, so the job does not make an unintended change.
2. Identify the playlist and its existing entries
Use the YouTube Data API to list the playlist items before updating them. Keep the target playlist ID separate from each video ID. For a removal or position update, the operation targets the playlist-item ID: it identifies that video’s placement in that playlist, not merely the video itself. Read the entries and retain the relevant playlist-item ID for the later action.

3. Authorize the write operations
Playlist-item writes require OAuth authorization. YouTube’s API guide describes API keys or OAuth tokens for requests and requires OAuth when modifying data. Use channel authorization appropriate to the task, store credentials securely, and avoid exposing tokens in source code, logs, or shared scheduler settings. Build a way to detect expired or revoked authorization; a scheduled job cannot succeed if its credential stops working.
4. Call the operation that matches the intended change
- Insert: add a video to the playlist.
- Delete: remove a playlist-item entry, not the underlying YouTube video.
- Update: change playlist-item details such as its position. Set playlist ordering to Manual if the job must place an item at a particular position.
Google’s current method references list a cost of 50 quota units for each playlist-item insert, delete, or update call. The YouTube Data API Getting Started guide lists a default allocation of 10,000 units per day for most other endpoints; that default can change, and your project’s actual quota is the one to check. Budget for all calls the script makes, including listing items and any retries.

5. Schedule the script and monitor its result
Run the job at the intended local time using a scheduler you choose; the YouTube API documentation does not prescribe a particular scheduler. Record a useful success or failure outcome and arrange an alert or human fallback. After the first run, verify the playlist in YouTube and confirm the correct video, order, and retention behavior. Repeat that check after changing the selection rule or authorization.
Prevent common automation failures
- The wrong entry is removed or moved: the workflow used a video ID where the operation needs the playlist-item ID. List the playlist first and match the intended item before writing.
- The new video appears in the wrong place: the job inserted it without the intended position rule, or the playlist is not set to Manual for a position update. Confirm the ordering setting and requested position.
- The job runs but does not change the playlist: check whether OAuth access expired or was revoked, whether the authorized account can edit the target playlist, and whether the API returned an error. Log the response without logging secrets.
- The job creates duplicates: a retry may repeat an insert after the first request succeeded but before the script recorded success. Check existing playlist items before inserting and make the workflow safe to rerun.
- The video cannot be added: verify that the selected video is available to the authorized channel and eligible for the playlist; handle missing or inaccessible videos as an exception rather than assuming every daily selection is valid.
- The API rejects a write or quota runs low: inspect the returned error and project quota, then avoid unbounded retries. Each insert, delete, and update method has a documented 50-unit cost.
- No change happens at the expected time: check the scheduler’s timezone, execution history, and alerting. The scheduler is separate from YouTube’s video-publication scheduling.
Keep copyright and channel policies in view
Playlist automation changes how videos are organized; it does not establish that a video is authorized for upload or that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies. For satsang recordings, confirm that the channel has rights to the recording and any music, performance, or other material included, and review YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content guidance separately. A daily playlist rule cannot resolve rights or monetization questions.
