To format every time you save, enable "editor.formatOnSave": true. If VS Code finds more than one formatter, choose Format Document With… → Configure Default Formatter… first, then turn on save formatting.
Format a file or selection immediately
- Open the file in VS Code and make sure its language mode is correct (for example, Python, Go, TypeScript, JSON, HTML, or CSS).
- Open the Command Palette and run Format Document. You can also right-click in the editor and choose the same command. On Windows and Linux, the documented shortcut is Shift+Alt+F; macOS uses the platform equivalent.
- To change only part of a file, highlight the code, open the Command Palette, and run Format Selection.
- Review the changed lines before committing. Formatting changes whitespace and layout; it does not prove that the program is correct.
If VS Code asks which provider to use, choose Format Document With…, then Configure Default Formatter… and select the extension or built-in provider you want for that language.
Turn on format on save
Open Preferences: Open User Settings (JSON) from the Command Palette, or open the Settings editor and search for Format On Save. Add this setting for every language:

These behaviors are off by default in the general formatting workflow. Enable only the triggers your team wants, because formatting on every keystroke can be distracting and paste formatting is not supported by every provider.
Use a different formatter for each language
Language-specific settings are the safest way to avoid applying a Python formatter to TypeScript or a project formatter to unrelated files. For example:

}Replace the language identifier and formatter identifier with the values supplied by the extension you installed. The language block can contain other editor settings, so you can keep save formatting enabled while leaving it off for a language that has no suitable provider.
Python
Install a formatter extension, select it as the default for Python, and then enable save formatting. Microsoft’s Python documentation uses the Black Formatter identifier ms-python.black-formatter. Formatting and import organization are separate jobs: Ruff can organize imports through editor.codeActionsOnSave, but choosing an import action does not replace selecting a formatter.

Go
Go formatting is provided by gopls. The Go extension runs formatting on save by default. To disable that behavior:

}JavaScript and TypeScript
VS Code includes a built-in formatter for JavaScript and TypeScript. TypeScript-specific js/ts.format.* settings provide basic formatting customization. If your project standard is a separate formatter, install that extension and set it as the language’s default instead of allowing two providers to compete.

Built-in formatting is documented for JSON, HTML, and CSS as well as JavaScript and TypeScript. Open one of these files, run Format Document, and inspect the result. For languages outside the built-in set, use a maintained Marketplace formatter extension that supports the operations you need.
Choose a formatter deliberately
When several providers are installed, compare them on the dimensions that affect your workflow:

| Maintenance and trust | Check the publisher, extension permissions, update history, and whether the project is actively maintained. |
Set one default provider per language. If a project requires a different provider, commit the workspace setting so every contributor receives the same choice.
Understand settings precedence
A setting that appears correct can still be overridden. VS Code evaluates defaults, user, remote, workspace, folder, language-specific defaults, language-specific user/remote/workspace/folder settings, and finally policy settings. In practice, a workspace or folder value can override your user setting, and a language block can override the general editor.formatOnSave value.

- Open the target file and confirm the language mode in the status bar.
- Open Settings and search for format on save; use the gear menu to inspect the setting’s source.
- Open the repository’s
.vscode/settings.jsonand check for a language block that changeseditor.formatOnSaveoreditor.defaultFormatter. - In a remote window, inspect remote settings as well as local user settings.
The default-settings file is read-only and is useful for comparison. Do not edit it to fix a project; change user or workspace settings instead.
Why VS Code is not formatting on save
No formatter is selected
Run Format Document With… → Configure Default Formatter… and select a provider. A language can have format-on-save enabled while still lacking a formatter.
The file has the wrong language mode
Click the language indicator in the status bar and choose the correct language. A formatter is selected by language identifier, so a file detected as Plain Text will not use the Python or TypeScript block.

A workspace setting overrides your user setting
Inspect .vscode/settings.json, folder settings, and remote settings. Correct the most specific language block rather than repeatedly changing the global value.
Settings JSON is invalid
VS Code highlights syntax errors in settings.json. Remove comments or trailing commas only where the file format requires it, close missing braces, and save again. Use Preferences: Open User Settings (JSON) to edit the active user file.
Two extensions are competing
Disable the unwanted formatter for that language or set an explicit default. If you need a one-off shortcut without changing the default, bind editor.action.formatDocument.multiple to a key and provide the formatter identifier in the keybinding configuration.
The formatter cannot parse the file
Check the extension’s output panel and the file’s syntax errors. Formatters generally cannot produce a reliable result when the source is incomplete or uses syntax unsupported by the installed version. Fix the parse error, save, and format again.
Save formatting is disabled for the current language
A language block such as "[go]": { "editor.formatOnSave": false } wins over the global setting. Remove or change that override if save formatting is intended.

Keep formatting predictable in a team
- Commit workspace settings only when the repository has an agreed formatter and language policy.
- Use the formatter’s project configuration file as the source of style rules; avoid relying on each developer’s personal settings.
- Separate formatting from import sorting and lint fixes so code actions do not make unexpected edits.
- Review the diff after a formatter upgrade, especially when a formatter’s configuration format changes.
- For large files or remote workspaces, test save-time behavior before enabling format-on-type.
