A website screenshot is not authenticated just because it looks convincing. Verify the source page, compare the screenshot with independent and time-relevant evidence, and treat metadata or provenance credentials as supporting clues—not proof that the page or its claim is true. Your conclusion should be calibrated: corroborated, contradicted, or unresolved.

What website screenshot authentication can—and cannot—show

Authentication is a chain of checks, not a visual judgment or the result of one search tool. A screenshot can preserve its pixels accurately while misrepresenting which page they came from, when the page appeared, or what the surrounding claim means. Separate three questions:

  • Integrity: Is this file unchanged from a particular comparison copy?
  • Provenance: What source or processing history can be established for the file?
  • Truth and context: Did the depicted page exist as claimed, at the relevant time, and does its content support the claim being made?

A hash can help answer the first question, and provenance information may help with the second. Neither alone answers the third. The FBI distinguishes image integrity from whether an image accurately represents what it purports to show (FBI guidance).

Preserve the screenshot and record its claim

Keep an untouched copy

Save the received file as-is before cropping, annotating, converting, or resaving it. Note where and when you received it, who supplied it if known, and any accompanying message or caption. Work from a duplicate. Editing can change metadata and make later comparisons harder.

Write down what the image purports to show

Transcribe the visible site or domain, page title, headline, date, author or account name, and one or two distinctive sentences. Record the claim attached to the image separately from what is actually visible. These details are search leads, not authenticated facts; a URL drawn inside an image is not proof the browser visited that address.

Trace the page to its original source

  1. Check the domain carefully. Navigate to the organization through a trusted route, such as its known homepage or an official account, then inspect the address bar. Look for misspellings, extra words, misleading subdomains, or a different top-level domain.
  2. Search distinctive wording. Search an exact phrase from the screenshot in quotation marks, along with the claimed site name or headline. Search the page title too. A result may lead to the original article, a copy, a quotation, or a debunk; inspect the destination, not just the search snippet.
  3. Follow official links and identifiers. Compare the page author, account name, organization links, and other visible identifiers with the organization’s own site or verified channels where available.
  4. Open the live page directly. If it exists now, compare its wording, title, byline, dates, and layout with the image. A matching live page establishes that content is available now; it does not establish that the screenshot was captured on the date claimed.

The UK House of Commons Library’s image-verification guidance recommends finding the original source and checking the additional context it may provide (How to verify images and videos).

Compare independent and time-relevant evidence

A page that matches today may have changed since the screenshot was allegedly taken. Compare the image with other evidence that can speak to the relevant time and context:

  • Archived versions: Check whether an archived copy is available near the claimed date. Record the archive and capture date, and note that an archive may be incomplete or may not preserve every page element.
  • Other pages from the publisher: Look for related announcements, corrections, or coverage that clarify whether the page fits the publisher’s record.
  • Independent reporting: Search for credible reporting of the same event or statement. Agreement can corroborate context; it does not automatically prove the screenshot itself is genuine.
  • Earlier appearances of the image: Run a reverse-image search and check whether the image appeared before the claimed date, under another caption, or in a different context.

Google’s About this image feature can surface available image history, prior appearances, descriptions by other sites, and metadata; Google’s Fact Check Explorer can help find images used in existing fact checks. Treat both as ways to find leads, not as conclusive authenticity verdicts (About this image; Fact Check Explorer; Google Search tools for checking facts and images). Search indexes are incomplete and a lack of results does not show that an image is original.

Inspect metadata and C2PA credentials carefully

Metadata is editable and often missing

Image metadata may identify a device, software, timestamp, or processing history, but it can be absent or changed. Social platforms often strip metadata, and a timestamp in a file does not independently prove when the pictured website state existed. The House of Commons Library and FBI both warn about metadata’s limitations (House of Commons Library guidance; FBI guidance).

A valid C2PA manifest has a defined scope

C2PA is a standard for provenance information and cryptographically verifiable bindings. Its technical specification defines authenticity in terms of facts, including provenance data and hard bindings, that can be verified as not having been tampered with (C2PA Technical Specification, version 2.2). A valid manifest can help establish which claims were signed and whether content covered by those bindings changed after signing. It does not prove every assertion is truthful, establish that the signer is trustworthy, or show that the pictured page’s claim is true. The C2PA explainer describes the verification and trust model (C2PA and Content Credentials Explainer, version 2.2).

If credentials are present, use a compatible verifier and inspect the signer, assertions, recorded actions, and validation status rather than relying on a badge alone. A screenshot taken from credentialed source media may not carry that media’s original credentials. The Content Authenticity Initiative explains that a screenshot of an image does not carry the original image’s C2PA metadata; missing credentials therefore do not prove manipulation or inauthenticity (Content Authenticity Initiative FAQ).

A practical verification workflow

  1. Preserve the original file and note its source, receipt time, and accompanying claim.
  2. Transcribe the visible domain, title, date, account or author, and distinctive text without treating them as established facts.
  3. Reach the organization through a trusted route; inspect the actual domain and search the exact wording and title.
  4. Compare the image with the live page, available archived copies, related publisher pages, and credible independent reporting. Note the date of each comparison and any differences.
  5. Run reverse-image search or Google’s image-context tools. Check earlier appearances, alternate captions, and existing fact checks.
  6. Inspect available metadata and, if present, validate C2PA credentials with a compatible verifier. Record what the signer and assertions say and what they cover.
  7. Write a conclusion that matches the evidence: corroborated, contradicted, or unresolved. State which checks support it and where uncertainty remains.

How to report the result without overstating it

Describe the result of each check rather than giving the image a blanket “real” or “fake” label. For example: “The publisher’s live page currently contains the same headline, but I found no archived copy from the claimed date; the capture date remains unresolved.” Or: “An earlier copy of the same image appears with a different caption, which contradicts the claim that it shows the later announcement.”

Make clear whether you confirmed the page’s current existence, found evidence about its earlier state, matched an image to prior uses, or validated a file’s provenance. Those are different findings. A file hash can show that two copies are identical, but not that either copy faithfully depicts the real page.

Common problems and what to do next

  • The page is live, but the claimed capture date is uncertain: Look for an archive or contemporaneous independent reporting. A current match does not settle when the page first appeared.
  • No reverse-image result appears: Treat the result as unresolved, not proof of originality. The image may not be indexed, may be cropped or altered, or may be too recent to have appeared in search results.
  • Metadata is missing: This is common and does not itself indicate tampering. Continue with source tracing and comparison.
  • The metadata timestamp seems persuasive: Record it as a clue, not a verified capture time; metadata can be edited and may refer to file processing rather than the depicted page.
  • A C2PA badge or manifest is present: Check validation state, signer, assertions, and scope. A valid signature is not a guarantee that the assertions or page content are truthful.
  • A screenshot lacks C2PA credentials: Do not infer that it is fake. Screenshots may not retain the source image’s credentials.
  • The image looks visually convincing: Appearance alone cannot establish source, date, or context. Return to the page, archive, and independent-evidence checks.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a fresh screenshot for documentation or comparison, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it does not authenticate a screenshot someone else sent you. For a one-request capture, create an API key and run this cURL example (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The service accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
