To audit a terminal-connected device on Linux, inspect the exact /dev path your application opens, then check its owner, group, mode bits, ACLs, and the udev rules that may assign those settings. If you also need a record of later access, assess Linux Audit separately: it monitors configured events; it does not set or fix device permissions.

1. Identify the device node the application actually opens

Start with the precise path used by the terminal application, such as /dev/ttyUSB0. Do not assume a friendly symlink and its target have identical metadata. Check both the application’s path and the device it resolves to so you audit the object the application actually accesses.

2. Check the node’s type, owner, group, and mode

Use ls -l for a quick view and stat when you want structured file status information:

ls -l /dev/DEVICE
stat /dev/DEVICE

Replace /dev/DEVICE with the actual path. Confirm that the node is the expected character or block device, then record its owner, group, and mode. These commands inspect the current state; they do not explain which policy created it. See the ls(1) manual and stat(2) manual.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

3. Check ACLs, including the effective-rights mask

Mode bits alone may not show everyone who can access the device. Run:

getfacl /dev/DEVICE

Look for named user and group entries as well as the ACL mask. The mask can restrict the effective permissions of entries that appear to grant broader access, so do not judge access from an ACL entry in isolation. The getfacl(1) manual explains ACL output and effective permissions.

4. Trace the device’s udev properties and matching rules

udev processes kernel device events and applies rules, which can set properties such as ownership, group, and mode. Query the node’s udev data and inspect its device and parent attributes:

udevadm info --query=all --name=/dev/DEVICE
udevadm info --attribute-walk --name=/dev/DEVICE

Use the reported properties and attributes to find candidate rules. Check the available options against the udevadm version installed on your host; consult the udevadm(8) manual.

Review applicable .rules files in these directories:

  • /etc/udev/rules.d
  • /run/udev/rules.d
  • /usr/local/lib/udev/rules.d
  • /usr/lib/udev/rules.d

Search for rules matching relevant SUBSYSTEM, KERNEL, ATTR, or ATTRS values, and for assignments involving OWNER, GROUP, MODE, tags, or symlinks. Rules are collected from system and local directories and processed in lexicographic order; a local file with the same name as a vendor file can replace it. The udev(7) manual describes rule loading and matching.

5. Decide whether the current access is appropriate

Compare the observed access with your organization’s least-privilege policy and the device’s intended use. A group-readable or group-writable mode may be intentional, but the correct group and scope depend on that policy. Linux does not have one universal permission mode or group that is right for every terminal-connected device class and distribution.

Treat the node’s permissions as a snapshot, not necessarily durable configuration: udev rules may assign or reset them when the device is added or another event occurs. A one-time chmod may therefore fail to persist. If a change is authorized, identify and review the governing policy first rather than changing the node blindly.

6. Monitor later access only if you need an event record

For ongoing observation, consider a Linux Audit filesystem watch for the path and the access categories you need. Before adding one, check audit status, architecture, whether rules must persist across reboot, expected event volume, and local audit policy. The audit rule perm filter refers to access types and syscall behavior; it is not the device node’s Unix permission mode. Audit rules record configured events and do not repair unsafe permissions. See audit.rules(7) and auditctl(8).

Which tool answers which question?

Tool What it reveals Best use
ls -l or stat Node metadata, including owner, group, and mode Quick current-state check
getfacl Extended ACL entries and the mask that can limit effective rights Checking access beyond the basic mode bits
udevadm info Device properties and attributes useful for tracing udev policy Finding candidate rules that manage the node
Linux Audit Events covered by configured audit rules Monitoring specified activity over time

These methods are complementary: the first three help explain present metadata and its likely source; Audit can observe selected events later. Exact commands and options may vary with installed utilities, so check the manuals on the host.

Before changing an ACL or rule

Inspection is read-only. Permission changes and udev rule edits can alter who gets device access, so review them separately and verify the result afterward. If you use setfacl, reread the ACL and mode: when the filesystem cannot represent the requested ACL as entered, setting it can also change mode bits. See the setfacl(1) manual.
