Audit a Kubernetes node and its control plane as separate but connected evidence sources. Kubernetes API audit logs can show API-mediated activity when enabled and retained, but they do not record direct kubelet API access and cannot establish whether host files, services, processes, or credentials were changed. To investigate unexpected root access, compare the node with a trusted baseline, review who can control the host or kubelet, inspect persistence surfaces, and correlate host and control-plane records.

Define the node’s expected state before looking for anomalies

Start with the node’s provider, Kubernetes version, operating-system image, container runtime, identity, and role. A difference is meaningful only against a suitable reference: compare a worker with workers of the same role and platform version, not with a control-plane node or a different image.

Gather the approved kubelet configuration and service arguments, static Pod manifest source, host security policy, package or image baseline, and list of allowed privileged workloads from sources you trust independently of the potentially affected node. Source-controlled configuration, trusted image records, and clean peer nodes can help establish that reference. Do not treat the node’s current state as its own proof of what was expected.

Check who can gain root or equivalent control

Review host-level access

Inventory administrator accounts, SSH and console access, sudo policy, privileged service accounts, and provider-specific node-access mechanisms. Trace recent access and privilege escalation through operating-system authentication and related provider records. The exact access mechanism depends on the distribution and managed service.

Review Kubernetes permissions that can reach the host

Inspect users and service accounts granted access to nodes/proxy, permission to create Pods on sensitive nodes, or the ability to run privileged or host-mounted workloads. Also identify principals that can change kubelet configuration or use node-management integrations. Trace each grant through its RoleBinding or ClusterRoleBinding to the principal and a documented purpose.

Treat get on nodes/proxy as sensitive, not as harmless read-only access. Kubernetes documentation warns that this permission can authorize kubelet WebSocket endpoints, including endpoints capable of executing commands in containers. Review the exact verbs and subresources granted rather than judging a role by its name. See Kubernetes’ Securing a Cluster and Kubernetes API Server Bypass Risks guidance.

Inspect kubelet authentication, authorization, and reachability

Review the effective kubelet configuration and startup arguments using the supported method for your distribution or provider. Check anonymous authentication, authentication mode, authorization mode, client CA or webhook configuration, and network exposure. Kubernetes’ kubelet reference describes defaults that can leave otherwise-unrejected HTTPS requests anonymous and authorization in AlwaysAllow mode; verify the running configuration instead of assuming those defaults are safe or unchanged.

Kubernetes documents --anonymous-auth=false as a way to reject unauthenticated requests and webhook authorization as a way to delegate access checks to the API server. Confirm that the kubelet port is reachable only from trusted sources and that the unauthenticated read-only port is disabled. Paths, service units, arguments, and provider defaults vary, so there is no universal file path to check.

Verify the kubelet’s identity and authorization boundaries

Confirm that the kubelet credentials identify the expected node as system:node:<nodeName> in the system:nodes group. Check that the API server uses Node authorization where appropriate and that NodeRestriction is enabled to constrain kubelet writes to its own Node object and Pods bound to that node.

Kubernetes’ v1.36 Node Authorization documentation describes Node Authorization as stable since v1.34. That status is version-specific: verify the documentation and effective configuration for the cluster you are auditing rather than assuming every cluster has the same authorizers or admission controls.

Look for host persistence and execution paths

Static Pod manifests and their sources

Find the configured static Pod manifest path and, if manifests are sourced elsewhere, inspect that source too. Look for unfamiliar manifests, unexpected content or metadata changes, altered ownership or permissions, and unauthorized remote manifest URLs. Compare both contents and filesystem metadata with trusted configuration and deployment records.

A user who can write to a kubelet’s static Pod manifest directory or its source can add or change Pods outside ordinary API management. Kubernetes also warns that static Pods may run even when they are not registered in the API in certain admission-failure cases. A missing or unfamiliar Pod in an API listing therefore does not replace host-side inspection.

Container runtime sockets and host mounts

Inspect runtime socket ownership and filesystem permissions, and identify Pods that mount the socket or broad host paths. Kubernetes recommends tightly restricting access to runtime sockets, ideally to root, and restricting hostPath mounts that expose them. Socket access can enable container control, so investigate unexpected permissions and mounts against the workload policy for that node.

Correlate records while accounting for audit-log blind spots

Use several evidence sources because each records a different kind of activity. Kubernetes states that direct access to the kubelet API is not subject to admission control and is not logged by Kubernetes audit logging. API audit records alone therefore cannot establish what happened on the host.

Evidence source Useful for Important limit
Kubernetes API audit logs Reconstructing API-mediated actions when audit logging was enabled and records were retained. Direct kubelet API access is not logged by Kubernetes audit logging.
Host authentication and privilege logs Reviewing logins, administrative access, and privilege escalation recorded by the operating system. They cover only events captured and retained by the host’s logging setup.
File integrity, service-manager, and process telemetry Correlating changes to files, services, and running commands with the expected node state. Coverage depends on which records or monitoring were enabled.
Identity-provider, cloud control-plane, and network records Connecting identities, provider-mediated access, and network activity to the node timeline. These records do not independently prove the host’s file or process state.

Correlate available API audit logs with identity-provider and cloud control-plane records, operating-system authentication and privilege escalation logs, service-manager events, filesystem integrity records, process or command telemetry, and network flow or firewall records. Kubernetes recommends enabling audit logging and archiving the audit file on a secure server; retain records outside the node so a host change cannot erase the only copy.

Preserve relevant evidence outside the node and follow your incident-response process before rebooting, upgrading, or replacing a suspected node. Those actions can alter or discard evidence needed to reconstruct events.

Compare like-for-like nodes and investigate differences

Compare peer nodes with the same role and platform version across the following areas:

  • Effective kubelet authentication and authorization settings.
  • API server Node and NodeRestriction authorization configuration.
  • RBAC subjects and permissions on node subresources, especially nodes/proxy.
  • Static Pod manifest path, contents, source, ownership, and permissions.
  • Kubelet service arguments and configuration integrity.
  • Runtime socket permissions and hostPath exposure.
  • Privileged workload inventory and host access.
  • Operating-system accounts, sudo policy, and SSH or console access.
  • Recent file, package, process, and network changes.

A difference is a lead to explain, not proof of compromise. Kubernetes guidance identifies these security surfaces but does not define a universal forensic baseline across providers and node images.

Know what the audit can and cannot establish

An audit can show whether observed settings and activity match a trusted baseline, and it can identify access paths or changes that warrant investigation. It cannot prove from API audit logs alone that a node was untouched: those logs may be disabled or no longer retained, and direct kubelet API access is outside their coverage. Host-level records and independently trusted baselines are necessary to assess node changes.

The Kubernetes documentation cited here includes Securing a Cluster, Kubernetes API Server Bypass Risks, static Pod guidance, the kubelet reference, and the v1.36 Node Authorization page, accessed October 4, 2026. Configuration details and paths vary by provider, distribution, and release; use the documentation for the deployed environment when verifying effective settings.
