Start by confirming which Claude environment your agency uses. Anthropic documents a self-service audit-log export for Claude Enterprise, but its published instructions do not establish that the same controls or click path apply to Claude for Government. For Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner can request an export at Organization settings > Data and Privacy > Export logs. It covers the previous 180 days, arrives as an emailed download link active for 24 hours, and records events and identifiers—not chat or project titles or contents.

Confirm the Claude product and deployment before exporting

Claude for Government and Claude Enterprise are separate offerings in Anthropic’s public documentation. Anthropic describes Claude for Government as operating in a FedRAMP High-authorized environment and making it available to U.S. federal, state and local agencies and qualifying public-sector organizations. That description does not establish that Enterprise’s administrative interface or compliance features are available in a government tenant.

Anthropic’s Claude for Government Help Center page says organizations will move to the updated Claude for Government Desktop offering by October 4, 2026, and directs administrators to the government administrator guide for current instructions. Confirm your organization’s product version and deployment path there before using Enterprise-specific steps.

This distinction is especially important for the Compliance API: Anthropic’s Enterprise API documentation excludes Public Sector organizations. Do not treat the Enterprise API instructions below as confirmation that a government organization can enable or use that API.

Export audit logs in Claude Enterprise

Anthropic’s audit-log export is documented for Enterprise organizations. An Owner or Primary Owner can request it; Admins are not listed as eligible for this export.

  1. Sign in to the organization as an Owner or Primary Owner.
  2. Open Organization settings > Data and Privacy.
  3. Select Export logs.
  4. Allow time for Anthropic to aggregate the records. The requesting Owner receives an email with a download link; retrieve the file within 24 hours of delivery because the link expires.

The export aggregates the organization’s previous 180 days of audit logs. These steps come from Anthropic’s Enterprise audit-log instructions; the cited public materials do not show that this interface works in Claude for Government Desktop.

What the audit export records—and what it does not

Anthropic describes the file as an event and entity record, not a transcript archive. Documented columns include created_at, actor_info, event, event_info, entity_info, ip_address, device_id, user_agent and client_platform. Some values may be absent. Entity records can include a type, UUID, optional name and optional metadata.

Examples of logged activity include sign-ins and sign-outs, invitations and membership changes, SSO and domain settings, project changes, file uploads, conversation creation, renaming or deletion, and organization data exports. Chat and project titles and contents are not included; the export identifies them with unique identifiers. Those identifiers may help correlate events with other records, but they do not reveal the conversation or project itself.

If a compliance task requires chat inputs and outputs, Anthropic separately documents organization data exports for Primary Owners. The data-export link is also active for 24 hours after delivery. Review Anthropic’s data export instructions, and establish that this route is suitable for your agency’s policy and authorization boundary before relying on it.

Check encryption and API eligibility

Customer-managed encryption keys

Anthropic says the Export logs button cannot be used when an Enterprise organization uses customer-managed encryption keys. Its audit-log documentation points to the Compliance API for audit events in that configuration. For a government organization, verify the applicable government-specific instructions rather than assuming the Enterprise alternative is available.

Compliance API coverage and access

Anthropic describes the Compliance API as a programmatic way to retrieve activity-feed events, chat data and file content for monitoring and compliance workflows. Its published eligibility is for Enterprise organizations excluding Public Sector organizations, and Claude Platform customers in Claude chats. Therefore, the page does not establish Enterprise Compliance API eligibility for Claude for Government.

For eligible Claude Enterprise organizations, only the Primary Owner can enable the API from Organization settings > API. A Primary Owner can create a key covering linked organizations; an Owner can create a key limited to their own organization. Admins do not see the page. For linked organizations, the parent Primary Owner enables the API and the setting applies across linked organizations. Anthropic says audit-log events are included in the API.

Documented coverage includes Claude, Cowork and Claude Code in specified clients, but Anthropic lists exclusions, including Claude Code cloud sessions, Claude Code accessed through Claude Platform, other Microsoft 365 apps, and sessions run on Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI. Check the current Compliance API documentation against the organization’s actual deployment before designing collection around it.

Choose the record route that matches the audit need

Need Documented route Key scope or limitation
Enterprise event and entity history Organization settings > Data and Privacy > Export logs Owner or Primary Owner; previous 180 days; no chat or project titles or contents. Not established as a Claude for Government workflow.
Conversation inputs and outputs Organization data export Anthropic documents this export for Primary Owners; it is separate from audit logs. Confirm suitability for agency policy and authorization boundary.
Programmatic event and content collection Compliance API Enterprise documentation excludes Public Sector organizations; deployment exclusions apply. Government availability is not established by that page.

The right choice depends on the product and deployment, whether the requirement is for event metadata or content, who holds the necessary role, and whether encryption or cloud-provider routing changes availability. An Enterprise workflow is not a substitute for government-specific administrator guidance.

Apply the records requirements of your agency

A FedRAMP High authorization description does not specify which records a particular agency must retain or prove that the agency has met a records schedule or control. Determine retention and evidence requirements from the agency’s applicable records schedule, authorization package and counsel. The public product documentation cited here does not settle those agency-specific obligations.
