To take a screenshot in Windows 11, press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool overlay. If you want a one-key option, you can set PrtScn to open screen snipping. Windows also saves a full-screen screenshot directly with Windows logo key + PrtScn. Microsoft documents these built-in options, but not a general setting for assigning any arbitrary key combination to screenshots.
How do I assign a keyboard shortcut to take screenshots in Windows 11?
For a selected area, window, or other available capture mode, use Windows logo key + Shift + S. Microsoft describes this as opening the Snipping Tool overlay. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions explain the capture and editing workflow.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- When the screen dims and the Snipping Tool overlay appears, choose an available capture mode and select the screen content.
- Open the capture in Snipping Tool to annotate or edit it, then copy, save, or share it.
The available modes include freeform, rectangle, window, and full-screen capture. The snip is copied to Snipping Tool; saving behavior and the Screenshots folder settings can be managed in the app.
Can I make Print Screen open Snipping Tool?
Yes. Windows 11 lets you change the Print Screen key so it opens screen snipping. This is the built-in way to reach the snipping experience with a single key rather than assigning a new, arbitrary combination.

Some keyboards require you to hold Fn to use the Print Screen function. If your keyboard has no dedicated PrtScn key, Microsoft’s support page lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as a possible alternative; whether it works depends on the keyboard hardware.
Which screenshot shortcut should I use?
| Option | Capture and destination | Best for | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows logo key + Shift + S | Opens screen snipping for a selection or another available mode; the capture is available in Snipping Tool. | Capturing a region, window, or other specific content. | Use the app to edit, save, or share the snip. |
| PrtScn with the Accessibility setting enabled | Opens screen snipping. | A one-key entry point to screen snipping. | Enable the option under Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. |
| Windows logo key + PrtScn | Saves a full-screen image in Pictures > Screenshots. | Saving the entire screen directly as a file. | The keyboard may require Fn for the Print Screen function. |
| Shortcut-file or key-remapping workaround | Attempts to launch an app or invoke the built-in screenshot shortcut with a different binding. | People who need a particular custom combination. | Community suggestions only; setup-dependent, not a universal Windows setting. |
What if I need a different custom key combination?
Microsoft’s current support guidance covers the built-in shortcuts and the Print Screen setting, rather than a control for assigning any combination to the screenshot overlay. Community posts suggest workarounds such as setting a shortcut key in a shortcut file’s Properties or using PowerToys Keyboard Manager to remap a key to invoke Windows logo key + Shift + S. See the Microsoft Tech Community discussion and the Microsoft Q&A discussion for examples. These suggestions depend on how the app shortcut is exposed and on the specific remapping; they are not guaranteed to work on every Windows 11 installation.
