Give the agent the exact URL, viewport width and height in CSS pixels, when to capture, what part of the page to capture, the file format, and where to save it. Set the viewport before navigation if the page may respond to its size. For example: “Using Playwright, open https://example.com with a 1280 × 800 CSS-pixel viewport set before navigation. Wait until the main content is visible. Capture only the current viewport as a PNG, save it as /tmp/page.png, then report the viewport dimensions and file path.”
What to specify in your prompt
A precise request tells the agent what to load, how to configure the browser, and what result to return. Adapt this template:
Using Playwright, open

- URL: Give the specific page, not just a site name.
- Viewport: State both width and height and say “CSS pixels” when you mean browser layout dimensions.
- Timing: Specify a visible condition that indicates the page is ready, such as the main content appearing. A condition tied to the page is usually more useful than an arbitrary delay.
- Emulation: If you need mobile or other device behavior, name it separately: viewport dimensions alone do not configure every device property.
- Scope: Choose the visible viewport, full scrollable page, or a particular element.
- Output: Name a format and, if the agent can save files, a destination path.
- Verification: Ask the agent to report its applied settings and saved path. This helps check the request was followed, but does not prove the page rendered correctly.
Set viewport dimensions before navigation
In Playwright, page.setViewportSize({ width, height }) sets the viewport width and height in pixels. The documented example sets the size before navigating, and the Page API recommends doing so because some sites react to size changes. See Playwright’s Page API.

Use wording such as “set before navigation” when the page’s layout or behavior might depend on the initial viewport. Playwright also notes that changing viewport size resets screen. If you need more control over screen and viewport properties, browser-context settings can configure them separately; do not assume a viewport change alone represents a device. Visible viewport
This captures what is currently visible in the browser viewport. It is the right choice when you want a screenshot at a specific on-screen size.

Full page
A full-page capture covers the scrollable page rather than only the visible viewport, as if the page could fit on a much taller screen. Playwright supports a fullPage screenshot option; its screenshots guide explains the distinction. Be explicit because “at 1280 × 800” describes the viewport, not necessarily the final image dimensions in full-page mode.

CSS viewport size is not output image scale
Viewport width and height describe the browser’s layout area in CSS pixels. The screenshot’s pixel dimensions can be a separate choice. Playwright MCP documents scale: "css" for CSS-pixel output (the default) and scale: "device" for high-resolution output using device pixel ratio. If you require exact output image dimensions, state both the viewport and the screenshot scale in the prompt. See Playwright MCP screenshots.
Likewise, a phone-sized viewport is not by itself a complete phone simulation. Device emulation may include user agent, screen size, viewport, and touch capability. Specify the device or the emulation settings you need rather than saying only “make it mobile.” Playwright’s Page API discusses viewport and screen settings.

Mobile-style capture
Open
[URL]using[device or explicit emulation settings], with a[width] × [height]CSS-pixel viewport. Set viewport and screen values as specified before navigation. Capture[viewport or full page]as[format], save it to[path], and report the emulation settings used.
Only call the result an exact device reproduction if the necessary device properties were actually configured.

- Layout looks like the wrong size: Confirm the prompt gave width and height in CSS pixels and asked for the viewport to be set before navigation. Ask the agent to report the applied values.
- Image pixel dimensions differ from the viewport: Check whether device-scale output was selected. Specify screenshot scale as well as viewport dimensions when exact image pixels matter.
- Only part of the page appears: The agent may have captured the viewport rather than full-page mode. Name the intended capture scope explicitly.
- The page is incomplete or still loading: Replace a vague wait instruction with a visible, page-specific readiness condition, then request a new capture.
- Mobile rendering does not match expectations: A narrow viewport alone may not set user agent, touch capability, or screen properties. Specify the required emulation settings and ask the agent to report them.
- No file is available: Include a concrete save path and confirm that the agent’s environment can write files there. Ask it to report the output path or explain if it can only return the image another way.
