For a useful record, save each competitor landing page twice: submit its exact URL to the Internet Archive’s Save Page Now, then take a separate screenshot in a browser at a recorded viewport. Keep both artifacts with the URL and capture date, and inspect the archived page for missing content or assets. The archive provides a retrievable saved page; the screenshot records what you saw.
What to record before you capture
Start a record for each page so you can identify and compare it later. These are recommended research notes, not fields required by the Internet Archive.
- Exact live URL: retain the full URL, including any campaign or variant parameters that matter to the page you saw.
- Access date and time: record when you viewed and captured the page.
- Page context: note the offer, headline, calls to action, and any visible campaign or variant.
- Screenshot conditions: record whether the browser view was desktop or mobile and its viewport dimensions. Use the same viewport when comparing pages.
Save a retrievable copy with the Wayback Machine
- Open Internet Archive Save Page Now and enter the competitor landing page’s exact URL. You can also invoke Save Page Now through the Wayback Machine browser extension.
- Submit the URL and wait for the save attempt to finish. Save the permanent URL returned for that capture alongside the live URL and your access date.
- Open the returned archive URL and inspect the result. Check whether the page, images, CSS, and other important resources appear as expected.
Save Page Now captures the page you submit, including images and CSS when available; it does not follow outlinks or crawl the whole site. A site may prohibit crawling, SSL settings may cause a capture to fail, and assets may be missing if they are unavailable to the archive. Take a separate browser screenshot
- Open the live page in your chosen browser and set a viewport that suits the comparison, such as desktop or mobile.
- Capture the visible page or the page area you need to document. The sources do not specify a required screenshot application, file format, or viewport, so choose a method that fits your workflow and apply it consistently.
- Save the screenshot beside the archive URL and record the viewport, capture date and time, live URL, and a short note about what was visible.
The screenshot is a local visual record of the page as you saw it; the Wayback URL gives you a way to revisit the archived version. Neither guarantees a complete record of dynamic content, personalization, interactions, or assets that were not captured.

Compare competitor pages without overreading them
Use a consistent viewport and compare observable page elements: the URL and capture date, offer, headline, calls to action, and major visible layout changes. Keep notes tied to the specific saved version and screenshot, since pages can change over time.
A screenshot or archived rendering documents presentation; it does not establish rankings, traffic, or search performance. Google Search Central recommends checking how Google renders a live page with URL Inspection and ensuring important resources are accessible to Google. That guidance is about Google Search, not a guarantee of what the Internet Archive can capture. Google also says robots.txt controls crawling and is not a reliable way to hide a URL from search results. See its SEO Starter Guide and robots.txt guidance. Search Essentials also cautions that meeting its requirements does not guarantee that a page will be crawled, indexed, or served; consult Google Search Essentials.

Rights and interpretation
Do not assume that guidance about one kind of screenshot settles reuse rights for another. Google says users do not need to ask permission to use screenshots of Google Search pages and results in print for educational or instructional purposes, subject to its trademark rules and screenshot guidelines; it also says to show the Search interface naturally and not alter it. That is specific to Google Search screenshots and does not establish a general rule for screenshots of competitor landing pages or every online use.
