Don’t depend on one uninterrupted 24/7 YouTube broadcast to create a complete archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. End and restart the broadcast well before that limit, and record a separate local copy as a backup.

Why one 24/7 stream can lose its YouTube archive

YouTube’s archive guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. It warns that if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. A single, uninterrupted day-long broadcast therefore carries a real risk: the replay may be missing, even though the live stream was available to viewers. YouTube’s archive guidance does not promise that every stream below the threshold will produce a replay, either.

Do not schedule a handoff at exactly 12 hours. End each segment comfortably earlier, allowing time to end it cleanly, check the resulting replay, and start the next stream. That margin is a practical precaution, not a separate YouTube guarantee.

Use two preservation layers

Layer What it is for What you need to manage
YouTube replay A convenient published copy viewers can access after a segment ends. Keep each stream below YouTube’s stated 12-hour risk boundary, then check that the replay appears and has the intended visibility.
Local recording An independent backup you retain even if YouTube does not create a replay. Configure recording, confirm it is actually writing, check the resulting file, and maintain enough storage and backups for your retention needs.

YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. The platform guidance does not prescribe a recording app, file format, drive type, or recording settings, so choose a setup that fits your equipment and retention plan rather than assuming a particular configuration is required.

Set up the broadcast and local backup

  1. Create the stream in Studio. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule an encoder stream. Configure your encoder with the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover creating a stream and connecting an encoder. Keep the key private; YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains where stream keys and the stream URL fit into setup.
  2. Enable a local recording. Configure your encoder or recording system to save a copy locally while sending the live stream. Check that recording has started and that the destination has free space. A recording option being selected is not enough: verify that a file is being written.
  3. Set a segment boundary well before 12 hours. Choose a recurring run-of-show time to end the current broadcast and start another. Use separate segment titles and metadata where appropriate, so the resulting replays can be identified as episodes or parts.
  4. End the stream cleanly and verify the replay. After ending a segment, check the Live tab in Studio for the past stream. YouTube’s encoder stream instructions describe ending a stream and finding past streams.
  5. Start the next segment. Begin a new stream before the next scheduled block, using its intended title and metadata. If a gap between segments is unacceptable, plan the handoff and staffing or automation around that requirement; do not treat a single stream lasting more than 12 hours as a reliable archive strategy.
  6. Inspect and retain both copies. In Studio’s Live or Content area, check the replay and set its visibility to match your publishing plan. Open or sample the local file to confirm its audio and video are usable. Keep it for the required retention period, and consider a second stored copy if losing the only local file would be costly.
  7. Keep an index. Maintain a simple record of each segment’s title, date, and local file location. This makes older episodes easier to locate independently of YouTube’s interface.

Plan local storage around bitrate and retention

Storage needs depend on the recording bitrate and how long you keep each file. As a planning estimate, a recording at a steady bitrate of B megabits per second uses about B × 0.45 GB per hour in decimal gigabytes, before container overhead and any audio or recording differences. Multiply that hourly estimate by the hours recorded and the number of days or copies you intend to retain. For example, estimate from the actual bitrate of your recording rather than treating this formula as a guaranteed file size.

Check available capacity before the stream begins and monitor it during long recording sessions. A local archive only protects you if recording continues successfully and the file remains readable; a second copy helps protect against failure or accidental deletion of the first storage device.

DVR is not an episode archive

YouTube DVR lets viewers pause and rewind while a stream is live; it is a viewing control, not a retained replay. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s DVR guidance for its description and limitations. Do not use a viewer’s ability to rewind as evidence that an episode has been saved.

Common archive failures and fixes

  • The stream ran past 12 hours and no replay appeared: YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Keep the local recording, then use shorter, separately ended streams for future segments.
  • The replay is not where you expected in Studio: Check the Live tab for past streams and the Content/Live area for the replay’s visibility controls. Confirm that you are looking at the correct channel and segment.
  • The local recording is missing or stops early: Check that local recording was enabled, the intended destination was selected, and sufficient storage remained. Test the full recording workflow before relying on it for an important broadcast.
  • The replay exists but viewers cannot see it: Review its visibility in Studio and change it to suit the show’s publishing plan.
  • Older files are hard to identify: Use consistent segment titles and keep a separate index of dates and file locations.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. To use it, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud; it does not go live from a camera. StreamNeo can keep the broadcast running, but it does not remove the need to preserve and verify episode archives: use shorter stream segments and maintain a separate local recording if you need a dependable episode backup.
