In Windows, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations, then select Apply all. Microsoft’s built-in feature applies a set of power-saving settings in one click, but the choices vary by device—and a near-doubling of battery life is not guaranteed.
Where to find Apply all in Windows
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations.
- Review the listed options, then select Apply all to use them together. To keep control over individual changes, apply recommendations one at a time instead.
Microsoft documents this feature for Windows devices, but the recommendations shown depend on the computer’s hardware and sensors. If you do not see a particular option, it may not be supported on your device. See Microsoft’s battery-saving tips and Energy recommendations documentation.
What Energy recommendations can change
Energy recommendations brings together settings that can reduce power use. Depending on the device, the list may include:
- Power mode, screen brightness, and adaptive brightness.
- When the screen turns off and when the computer goes to sleep.
- Content-adaptive brightness and contrast, or features that respond to a person’s presence.
- Screen saver behavior and whether USB devices stay active while the screen is off.
Not every computer has the hardware or sensors needed for every recommendation. Review the options before applying them all. For example, display brightness or contrast changes may be distracting, and may not suit color-accurate photo or video work. You can leave an unsuitable recommendation unapplied.

Energy recommendations is not the same as Energy saver
Energy recommendations applies individual settings that affect power consumption. Energy saver is a separate Windows feature that manages system processes and power usage; its battery-saving behavior can restrict background activity. Choose recommendations when you want to review specific settings, and Energy saver when you want Windows to conserve power through its broader battery-saving behavior. Microsoft describes both in its battery-saving guidance.
Will Apply all double your laptop’s battery life?
There is no established result showing that it will double battery life across Windows laptops. The near-doubling headline reflects Mark Hachman’s reported test of one specific device, not a general guarantee.

In a 2026 PCWorld article, Hachman tested two Qualcomm Snapdragon-based laptops with Wi-Fi on, using a one-hour Procyon office-productivity benchmark rather than running either laptop until its battery was empty. For the Microsoft Surface Laptop 7th Edition, the reported hourly drain changed from 16% to 8% after applying recommendations; the article projected those rates to about 6.25 and 12.5 hours, respectively. The Asus ZenBook A16 changed from 17% to 14% hourly drain, with projected runtimes of about 5.9 and 7.7 hours. These are results reported for those machines and test conditions, not independent confirmation or a prediction for your laptop. Read Hachman’s PCWorld test report.
Choose recommendations around your priorities
The listed changes trade convenience or visual preference for lower power use. Consider the effect of each setting before applying it:

- Display comfort and accuracy: Lower brightness can save power, but may be uncomfortable in a bright room. Adaptive brightness or contrast changes may be unwelcome when consistent color matters.
- Idle convenience: Shorter screen-off or sleep intervals conserve power, but may interrupt a workflow when you step away briefly.
- Background activity: More aggressive conservation can affect background tasks or syncing, particularly when using Energy saver.
- Performance: A power-mode recommendation may favor efficiency over responsiveness, depending on the available setting and your workload.
If the result does not suit you, return to Energy recommendations and adjust the relevant option individually. Battery capacity also declines as lithium-ion batteries age; power settings cannot restore capacity already lost. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guidance.
