Apply topical minoxidil to the scalp—not the hair—and follow the dose and schedule on the exact product’s U.S. Drug Facts label. The reviewed products differ: 5% solution and men’s 5% foam are labeled twice daily, while women’s 5% foam is labeled once daily. Using extra or applying it more often will not improve results.

How do I apply minoxidil?
- Check the label and treatment area. Confirm that the product is intended for you and that its labeled area matches your pattern of hair loss. The reviewed men’s 5% foam, for example, is labeled for adult men with gradual thinning at the top (vertex), not a receding front hairline. If the cause or pattern is unusual, ask a clinician rather than assuming the product fits.
- Expose the scalp. Part the hair in the area you are treating so the medicine reaches the scalp skin. Applying it mainly to the hair will not put the dose where it is intended to work.
- Measure the product-specific amount. Use the solution dropper or foam directions described below; do not estimate a larger dose.
- Apply to the scalp. For solution, apply gradually over the hair-loss area. For foam, dispense and massage it into the scalp as its label directs.
- Wash your hands. Keep the medicine away from your eyes and other body areas. Wash hands after applying to reduce accidental transfer.
- Let it dry completely. Avoid lying down, wearing a hat, or letting the treated area touch linens until dry. Follow the product-specific bedtime directions below.
How much minoxidil should I use?
There is no single dose or schedule for every topical minoxidil product. These are directions from the reviewed U.S. labels; follow your own product’s label if it differs.

Should I apply minoxidil to wet or dry hair?
The reviewed labels instruct users to apply the medicine to the scalp and let it dry fully, but they do not establish one universal wet-versus-dry rule for every product. Check your product’s label. In any case, part the hair and apply to the scalp rather than coating the hair; do not cover the area or lie down until the medicine has dried.
How long should I wait before washing my hair?
The reviewed 5% solution and men’s 5% foam labels say to wait about four hours after application before washing the hair or scalp. The 5% solution label also advises waiting about four hours before swimming when possible. These intervals are label-specific, so consult the directions for your product.

For the reviewed 5% solution, the night dose should be applied 2 to 4 hours before bed. The reviewed men’s foam label says to let the nighttime dose dry completely before bed.
What if I miss a dose?
Resume with the next scheduled dose; do not apply extra product or double up to make up for a missed dose. The reviewed labels say that using more or using it more often will not improve results and may raise the risk of side effects.

How long does minoxidil take to work?
The reviewed men’s 5% solution and foam labels say results may appear as early as two months, while some men may need at least four months. These are product-label expectations, not a promise; response varies, and full regrowth is not likely for everyone.
The same reviewed men’s labels say increased shedding may occur for up to two weeks after starting and may be temporary. If shedding continues beyond two weeks, they advise seeing a physician. Continued use is needed to maintain regrowth; those labels say newly regrown hair may be lost within three to four months after stopping.

Common minoxidil application mistakes
- Putting it on the hair instead of the scalp: Part the hair and target the skin in the labeled area.
- Using extra or applying more often: Stick to the exact label amount and schedule; more is not a shortcut to faster results.
- Doubling a missed dose: Skip the make-up dose and return to the next scheduled application.
- Washing it off too soon: For the reviewed 5% solution and men’s foam, allow about four hours before washing.
- Going to bed or covering the area while wet: Let the medicine dry to reduce transfer to linens, hats, or other skin.
- Leaving medicine on your hands or applying beyond the scalp: Wash hands and keep application to the labeled area; transfer can contribute to unwanted hair growth elsewhere.
- Ignoring foam flammability: Foam products carry a warning to avoid fire, flame, and smoking during and immediately after application.
When should I check with a doctor before using minoxidil?
Do not treat sudden, patchy, unexplained, or otherwise atypical loss as routine pattern hair loss without medical advice. The reviewed men’s foam label says not to use it for sudden or patchy loss, hair loss of unknown cause, an irritated scalp, or loss at the front/receding hairline; it is labeled for adult men with gradual thinning at the top/vertex. The reviewed women’s foam label also lists sudden or patchy loss, unknown cause, and hair loss associated with childbirth among situations where it should not be used, and warns against use under age 18. These are product-specific label directions, not a universal diagnostic rule.
