If Instagram removed content you posted, open the removal notice in the Instagram app and select Request Review if that option is available. To check what happened next, go to Help > Support Requests. The exact menus and actions can vary by app version, platform, region, and type of enforcement.
Appeal an Instagram content removal
- Open the removal notice. Check which content was removed, the reason Instagram gives, and any deadline or case-specific instructions. If the notice concerns copyright, follow its instructions rather than assuming the ordinary Community Guidelines process applies.
- Open the decision details in Instagram. If you see Request Review, use that option to ask Instagram to reconsider. Keep your explanation brief, factual, and specific to the decision: explain why you believe the content does not violate the stated policy. Meta says its support assistant is rolling out features to help users find explanations, appeal options, and updates, but that does not mean every removal can be appealed. Meta’s March 20, 2026 announcement says the rollout applies in countries and territories where Meta AI is available.
- Save any confirmation or reference information. Keep the notice and any case details available so you can identify the decision when checking for an update.
Check the appeal status
In the Instagram app, open Help > Support Requests and look for the relevant decision or case. Instagram’s 2024 annual online-safety report identifies Support Requests as a place users can see decisions and status. The exact screens may differ from the labels described in that report.
Do not confuse an appeal about your own removed content with a status check on content you reported. For reports about someone else’s post, Instagram’s Help Center describes the path Help > Support Requests > Reports; it also notes that not every report appears there. See Instagram’s instructions for checking a report’s status.

Copyright enforcement can involve a different process from a Community Guidelines review. Meta’s copyright appeal guidance explains that the message sent to the user contains instructions and distinguishes an appeal involving a copyright report outside DMCA procedures from a DMCA counter-notification when the removal followed DMCA notice-and-counter-notice procedures. The cited guidance is Facebook-branded, so use it to understand the distinction—not as assurance that every Instagram copyright case follows an identical workflow. A DMCA counter-notification is a legal process; Meta advises seeking legal advice if you are unsure which route applies.

Consider further review only if your case qualifies
Some decisions may be eligible for an appeal to the Oversight Board after Meta has reviewed the decision again and continues to keep the content down. Eligibility is limited, not a standard next step for every removal. Meta’s April 2021 explanation of the appeal process describes this possibility; check your notice and the Board’s current rules for the requirements that apply to your case.
How long does an Instagram appeal take?
The official sources cited here do not establish a general response-time commitment for Instagram content-removal appeals. Use the notice and Support Requests as the case-specific status sources; do not rely on an assumed same-day result or average wait. Meta’s copyright guidance notes that some matters can take longer when more analysis is required, but that is not an Instagram-wide estimate.

- Reopen the removal notice and check for case-specific instructions; the available actions depend on the decision.
- Check Help > Support Requests for the decision or status. If the issue is a report you filed about someone else’s content, look under Reports, bearing in mind that some reports may not appear.
- If the notice is about copyright, use the instructions in that message to identify the applicable route rather than submitting a DMCA counter-notification automatically.
- If Meta AI is available where you are, its support assistant may help locate explanations and appeal options, but it is a changing rollout and not a universal appeal channel.
When deciding between routes shown in a notice, check whether the case concerns your own content or a report you made, whether the stated basis is a platform-policy issue or copyright, what kind of action is offered, and what eligibility conditions and status details the notice provides.
