Give a concise, job-focused introduction: say what you do now (or how you are preparing for engineering work), share one or two relevant examples, and explain why this particular role fits. Aim for a conversational answer, not a life story or a spoken tour of your entire resume.
A word-for-word framework you can adapt
Use this as a scaffold, not a script to recite. Replace every bracket with accurate details; leave out any part that does not fit your background.
“I’m currently [role, study, or project focus], where I [relevant responsibility or strength]. One example is [specific project or accomplishment], where I [your contribution and truthful result]. Before that, I [brief relevant prior experience or preparation]. I’m interested in this [role] because [specific responsibility, product, or team focus], and I’d like to bring my experience in [relevant skill] while contributing to [role-related goal].”
The structure follows guidance from Indeed’s software-engineer interview guide and the San José State University Career Center’s Interviewing Guide: introduce relevant professional context, choose a few useful strengths or highlights, and connect them to the position.

Choose evidence that fits your career stage
The best example is the strongest truthful proof you have that matches the work in the job description. You do not need to present the same kind of evidence as every other candidate.
If you are an experienced software engineer
Start with your current role and select one or two responsibilities, projects, or accomplishments that map to this opening. Explain what you personally contributed. Mention an outcome only if you can describe it accurately; avoid listing every employer, tool, or project you have used.

If you are applying for an entry-level role
You can introduce yourself through a degree program, internship, coursework, or independent project rather than an existing engineering job. Pick an example that shows relevant technical work, collaboration, or problem-solving, and be clear about your own part in it.
If you are changing careers
Briefly name your transition and connect a transferable strength—such as analytical work or collaboration—to a concrete engineering project or learning experience. Keep the focus on evidence relevant to the role, rather than a full account of why you left another field.

Build the answer around the job description
- Identify the role’s priorities. Review the job description and select a small number of requirements that you can support with genuine experience.
- Choose a matching example. Use a project, task, internship, class, or prior job that makes one of those qualifications concrete. Explain your contribution rather than describing only what the team did.
- Make the connection explicit. Name a responsibility, product, or team focus that interests you, then link it to the skill or experience you would bring.
- Practice aloud, then speak naturally. Rehearse the sequence and key details, but do not memorize every sentence. San José State University’s guide says, “Do not memorize answers word-for-word.”
A project mention does not need to become a full behavioral-interview story. Give enough context to make your role and any claimed result understandable; save the detailed chronology for a follow-up question.
Keep it concise without racing
The San José State University Career Center suggests that most interview answers take about one to two minutes. Treat that as a flexible guide, not a required duration: use a shorter version if the interviewer asks for a quick introduction, and leave room for follow-up. Indeed likewise recommends keeping the response brief and focused.

Before the interview, check that the answer includes relevant professional context, a specific piece of evidence, and a clear reason for your interest in this role. If a sentence does not help the interviewer understand your fit, remove it.

You may hear “Walk me through your resume,” “Tell me a little more about your background,” “Can you tell me more about your experience?” or “What should I know about you that is not on your resume?” Keep the same job-relevant focus. For a resume walkthrough, use the most relevant career steps rather than narrating every line; for the last version, add professional context that is not already obvious from the document.
