This is a modern CSS feature with limited browser availability, so check support for your target browsers and provide a fallback where needed.
Transition height from 0 to auto
Apply the opt-in to the panel (or a deliberately chosen ancestor), keep overflow hidden while it changes size, and switch between closed and open states in your application:

}The example assumes your app adds or removes is-open. In the supported browsers, the panel can interpolate from the closed length to its natural content height. Choose a duration and easing that suit the interface; 250ms is an example, not a required value.
What interpolate-size allows
interpolate-size: allow-keywords opts into interpolation between a <length-percentage> value and an intrinsic sizing keyword such as auto. As MDN Web Docs explains in its interpolate-size CSS property reference, one end of the interpolation must be a length-percentage. It does not enable interpolation between two different intrinsic keywords.

The property is inherited. Setting it on a component keeps the opt-in local; setting it higher in the tree also affects descendants that inherit the value. Scope it intentionally rather than enabling it globally without considering other components.
Browser support and fallback choices
MDN classifies interpolate-size as limited availability and not Baseline. Its related calc-size() function is also limited availability and not Baseline. Check the live compatibility tables for the browsers and versions your users need: interpolate-size and calc-size().

Chrome for Developers describes the feature as opt-in; its guidance says Chrome 130 supports intrinsic keywords including auto, min-content, max-content, and fit-content, as well as content for flex-basis. That is Chrome-specific information, not proof of equivalent support in every browser. See Animate to height: auto (and other intrinsic sizing keywords) in CSS.
For browsers that do not support the property, select a fallback based on the component rather than assuming one recipe fits every case:

- If the content must push neighboring content down, application code can measure the content and transition to a pixel height. Account for content changes, container resizing, and interrupted open/close transitions.
- If neighboring content does not need to move, consider a visual reveal using a property such as
transforminstead of animating the box height. - Test both the supported CSS path and fallback with real content, including changes in text or images after the panel opens.
When calc-size() is useful
Use calc-size() when you need arithmetic involving an intrinsic size, rather than for a plain transition to auto. For example, height: calc-size(auto, size + 2rem) expresses an intrinsic height plus extra space. Regular calc() does not accept intrinsic keywords for this purpose. For a straightforward length-to-auto transition, MDN generally recommends interpolate-size instead. The detailed reference is MDN’s calc-size() documentation.
Layout and performance considerations
height affects box layout, so changing it can require the browser to recalculate layout as the animation progresses. If the design can be achieved without changing the box size, MDN advises preferring a non-box-model property such as transform where possible. Height animation remains appropriate when surrounding content needs to move naturally with an expanding element. See the MDN references for intrinsic-size interpolation and calc-size().

Troubleshooting
- The panel jumps instead of animating: confirm the browser supports
interpolate-size, that the property is set toallow-keywords, and that the transition is applied toheight. Check the target browser’s compatibility table. - The panel opens but content is clipped: inspect the panel’s overflow and any fixed height or max-height rules that may constrain the open state. The example uses
overflow: hiddento conceal content in the closed state. - A descendant behaves differently than expected: remember that
interpolate-sizeinherits. Check whether an ancestor opted in and scope the property to the intended component. - The fallback breaks after content changes: a measured pixel height can become stale when images load, text changes, or the container resizes. Re-measure when relevant content or dimensions change, and test interrupted transitions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I animate between two intrinsic sizing keywords?
No. interpolate-size: allow-keywords enables interpolation between a length-percentage and an intrinsic size keyword, not between two intrinsic keywords.
Does height animation move the content below the panel?
Yes. Because the element’s box height changes, following content participates in the resulting layout. That is useful for accordions, though it can incur layout work.
