WordPress does not provide a universal, built-in “email this author” control. The clearest author-by-author option is an RSS feed for each author. For email, Jetpack Newsletter supports site-wide and category subscriptions, but its documented Subscribe Block does not offer an author selector. If readers must choose specific authors and receive email only when those authors publish, use a currently verified author-filtered plugin or build a custom integration.
First, define what “subscribe to an author” means
Readers may mean one of two different services:
- RSS following: a reader subscribes to one author’s feed and sees that author’s new posts in an RSS application.
- Email notifications: a visitor submits an address and receives messages when selected content is published.
These are not interchangeable. An RSS link does not collect email addresses or send messages by itself.
Option 1: Give each author an RSS subscription link
WordPress exposes author-specific feeds. The author_feed_link hook is documented for author feed URLs and supports RSS2 and Atom feed types (WordPress developer reference). WordPress’s feeds documentation explains that feeds deliver content updates (Feeds handbook).
How the link works
An author archive has a feed URL generated by WordPress. Your theme or a small customization can place a link such as “Follow Jane Smith via RSS” on that archive or on the author’s profile. The visitor opens the link in an RSS reader and follows that author separately from other site content.

What this route does and does not provide
- It supports author-by-author scope.
- It requires the reader to use an RSS reader.
- It does not provide email delivery, subscriber confirmation, or an email preference database.
- It should not be presented as a newsletter signup.
Do not assume every WordPress theme displays an author feed link automatically; expose and label the link where readers will find it.
Option 2: Use Jetpack Newsletter for site-wide or category email
Jetpack Newsletter lets you enable newsletter functionality and add a Subscribe Block to a post, page, or widget area. Jetpack also documents a shortcode option and the setting label “Let visitors subscribe to this site and receive emails when you publish a post” (Jetpack Newsletter documentation).

Basic setup
- Enable Newsletter in Jetpack.
- Open the post, page, or widget area where you want the form.
- Insert and configure the Subscribe Block, or use Jetpack’s documented shortcode.
- Publish the location containing the form and verify the confirmation and unsubscribe experience with a test visitor.
Category subscriptions are not author subscriptions
The Subscribe Block documentation describes letting readers subscribe to selected newsletter categories (Jetpack Subscribe Block documentation). Categories can organize subjects, but the cited Jetpack documentation does not describe a control that lets a visitor select individual authors. Do not promise author-only email based on category settings.
Content covered by Jetpack’s documented trigger
Jetpack’s documented new-post email applies to standard posts. Publishing a page or custom post type does not trigger the same notification according to its Newsletter documentation. If your authors publish pages or custom post types, confirm that those content types are handled by your chosen system before presenting the subscription as complete.

Option 3: Provide author-selected email with a verified plugin or custom code
For a form where visitors choose one or more authors and receive email only for those authors’ new posts, verify the current product documentation before installing or recommending a plugin. Generic phrases such as “post notifications” do not establish author-level filtering.
Checks to make before adoption
- Author scope: the subscriber can select authors, not only categories or the whole site.
- Consent controls: confirmation, unsubscribe, and preference-management flows are documented.
- Content support: the system states which post types trigger messages.
- Delivery method: email provider, sending limits, and failure handling are clear.
- Maintenance: the plugin shows current updates and compatibility with your WordPress version.
- Administration: site owners can view, export, or manage subscriber preferences as required by their workflow.
No particular maintained plugin is established here as meeting every one of those requirements. If none does, a custom integration can associate subscribers with author IDs, listen for publication of eligible posts, and send only to matching subscribers. That approach requires ongoing development, email deliverability work, consent handling, and unsubscribe management.

Recommended implementation sequence
- Choose the delivery: decide whether readers need RSS, email, or both.
- For RSS: expose the author feed on each author archive or profile, label it clearly as an RSS option, and open it in a feed reader to confirm it resolves.
- For site-wide or category email: enable Jetpack Newsletter, add the Subscribe Block, and check that standard-post-only behavior matches your publishing model.
- For author-selected email: verify a plugin against the checklist above or commission a custom integration before advertising the feature.
- Test as a visitor: use a non-administrator account, subscribe, publish a new standard post by the selected author, and confirm the expected delivery. Also check pages or custom post types if your site relies on them.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling an author RSS feed an email subscription.
- Assuming a category selector filters by author.
- Promising notifications for pages or custom post types when the selected service documents standard posts only.
- Installing a plugin based solely on “post notification” wording without confirming author selection and preference controls.
- Skipping confirmation, unsubscribe, and deliverability checks.
WordPress.com versus a self-hosted site
WordPress.com documents blog subscriptions through email and Reader, with subscriber notification choices (WordPress.com blog subscriptions). That hosted experience should not be treated as proof that a self-hosted WordPress site has a per-author email preference control. On self-hosted sites, implement the RSS, Jetpack, plugin, or custom approach that matches the required scope.
