Put sticky="w" in the widget’s .grid() call to align it to the left side of its grid cell:
label.grid(row=0, column=0, sticky="w")
w means “west.” It positions the widget at the cell’s left edge without making it fill the cell.
Align a widget inside its grid cell
By default, when a grid cell is larger than a widget’s requested size, Tkinter centers the widget in the cell. Add sticky="w" to the .grid() call for the specific widget you want to move left:
import tkinter as tk
root = tk.Tk()
label = tk.Label(root, text="Name")
label.grid(row=0, column=0, sticky="w")
root.mainloop()
The Python Tkinter documentation describes the grid geometry manager, its cell options, and how it positions widgets inside their containers.
Choose between aligning and stretching
The sticky option controls where a widget sits in its cell and whether it stretches to the cell’s edges. Use the direction that matches the intended layout:
| Setting | Effect |
|---|---|
sticky="w" |
Aligns the widget to the left; it keeps its requested width. |
sticky="ew" |
Stretches the widget horizontally to fill the cell. |
sticky="nsew" |
Stretches the widget to fill the cell horizontally and vertically. |
Use sticky="w" for a left-aligned label or button that should remain its natural size. Use sticky="ew" when an entry or other control should grow across the available column width.
Make the column grow when the window grows
sticky positions or stretches the widget within its cell; it does not make the column receive extra space. Give the column positive weight on the same parent that manages the widget with grid:
parent.columnconfigure(0, weight=1)
label.grid(row=0, column=0, sticky="w")
A column with weight zero stays at its requested size. A positive weight allows it to receive extra width when its parent has space to distribute. With sticky="w", the widget stays at the left of that expanding cell; change to sticky="ew" if it should also expand to fill the width. The Python column-configuration documentation and the Tcl/Tk 8.6 grid manual explain grid sizing and column weights.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo leave space around the widget, set horizontal padding with padx, for example label.grid(row=0, column=0, sticky="w", padx=8). Padding creates space; it does not change the alignment direction.
Check why a widget still looks centered
- Check that
sticky="w"is on the intended widget’s own.grid()call, with the expected row and column. - Configure the column on the same parent container that manages that widget with
grid. - Decide whether you want the widget positioned at the left (
"w") or stretched across the cell ("ew"). - If the widget is left-aligned within its cell but the whole grid appears centered, inspect the grid region’s size and position separately.
stickypositions a widget relative to its cell; it does not move the entire grid region.
Use one geometry manager per parent
Choose a geometry manager for the layout as a whole rather than changing managers just to align one child. grid arranges widgets in rows and columns; pack arranges children against container sides, and place positions them using explicit distances or relative coordinates. Do not use grid and pack for children of the same parent. If different parts of an interface need different managers, put them in separate frames. The Python geometry-manager guidance covers this constraint.
