To get Apple Fitness+ on your TV, connect your iPhone or iPad and the TV to the same Wi-Fi network, start a workout, tap the AirPlay button in the playback controls, and select the TV. If Fitness+ does not show a direct AirPlay option, use Screen Mirroring from Control Center instead.
What you need to use Fitness+ on a TV
- An iPhone or iPad with Fitness+ and an active Fitness+ subscription. Apple’s iPhone-only baseline is iPhone 8 or later with iOS 16.1 or later.
- An Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD running the latest tvOS, or a smart TV marked “Works with Apple AirPlay.” A Mac can also be an AirPlay destination; Apple lists MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models from 2018, iMac models from 2019, Mac mini models from 2020, iMac Pro, and Mac Pro.
- The iPhone or iPad and receiving device connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
Fitness+ availability depends on country or region, and Apple recommends keeping supported devices updated. See Apple’s Fitness+ device requirements and AirPlay setup instructions.
Stream a Fitness+ workout directly with AirPlay
- Connect your iPhone or iPad and the TV, Apple TV, or Mac to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open Fitness+ and start the workout.
- Tap the AirPlay button in the video playback controls. If you do not see it, check whether another playback button reveals the AirPlay option.
- Select your TV or other receiver. If a passcode appears on the TV, enter it on your iPhone or iPad.
- To stop streaming, tap AirPlay again and select your iPhone or iPad.
Use Screen Mirroring if direct AirPlay is unavailable
Screen Mirroring sends the entire iPhone or iPad screen to the TV, rather than only the workout video. It is a useful fallback if the Fitness+ playback controls do not offer a direct AirPlay option.

How the Apple TV option compares with AirPlay to a smart TV
| Option | Fitness+ support | Extra Apple TV box | AirPlay needed | Workout metrics | Setup |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fitness+ on Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD | Native Fitness+ device support with the latest tvOS | Yes, if you do not already own one | No | Use the native Fitness+ experience; metric details are not stated in Apple’s cited AirPlay guidance | Open Fitness+ on Apple TV and choose a workout |
| AirPlay to a compatible smart TV | Playback is sent from iPhone or iPad | No | Yes; TV must support “Works with Apple AirPlay” | On-screen metrics are available only on some compatible TVs | Start workout on iPhone or iPad, then select TV from AirPlay |
| Screen Mirroring to a TV or Mac | Workout screen is mirrored from iPhone or iPad | No | Yes | On-screen workout metrics are not guaranteed | Start mirroring from Control Center |
Apple’s Apple TV 4K guide describes both Screen Mirroring and selecting Apple TV from the video’s AirPlay controls. Apple TV 4K is the clearest hardware choice if your existing television does not support AirPlay.

What happens to heart rate and workout metrics?
Apple warns that on-screen workout metrics appear on only some AirPlay-compatible smart TVs. Your Apple Watch can still show timers, heart rate, and Activity Ring celebrations. If having metrics on the television is essential, check your specific TV model or use the native Fitness+ experience on Apple TV rather than assuming every AirPlay TV displays them.

- If the TV is managed in the Home app, review Home settings that may restrict AirPlay access.
