You can reduce some gore and campaign swearing in Gears 5 using its documented accessibility settings. The controls are not confirmed for every Gears of War edition, so first check the exact game title on its main menu and use that title’s own options. In-game filters and Xbox parental controls do different jobs: one changes selected content in a supported game, while the other can restrict access to games.
How do I turn off gore in Gears of War?
In Gears 5, open the game’s options, go to the Accessibility section, and look for the violence or gore control. The official Gears 5 accessibility guidance documents an option to turn off gore effects. It removes some displayed blood and gore effects during gameplay; it does not promise to remove every violent image or mature element.

The guidance confirms the feature but does not establish a complete, current button-by-button route or identical menu labels on PC and console. Follow the labels in your installed version rather than relying on controller instructions for another platform.
How do I turn off swearing?
Gears 5 has separate controls for campaign dialogue and received text chat. In Options > Accessibility, look for the mature-content setting to disable swearing in the campaign story. The official description is: “Turn off mature content to disable swearing in the campaign story.” A separate profanity filter addresses strong or mature language in received text chat; it is not a campaign-dialogue setting.
#1 Best Overall
- AN ORIGIN STORY BEGINS — Fight alongside Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in the gripping origin story of Emergence Day, as the Locust Horde erupts from below.
- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
- MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.
- CLASSIC COMBAT, MODERNIZED — Experience signature cover‑based gameplay enhanced with updated movement, traversal, and controls that feel like Gears while playing like something new.
- CO‑OP YOUR WAY — Play online with up to four players across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus, or team up locally with 2‑player split‑screen co‑op on console.
These options reduce selected language. They do not change the game’s rating or establish that every mature element is removed.
Where are the mature-content settings?
For Gears 5, start in the game’s Options menu and open Accessibility. The official guidance documents the gore, campaign mature-content, and text-chat profanity controls there, but does not provide a verified platform-specific sequence or confirm that every edition uses the same labels.

Check the title shown on the main menu before following these directions. The available official information does not establish that Gears of War: Reloaded, the original Gears of War, or every other entry has the same controls or menu path. Use the options for the specific game you have installed.
What do the game settings and parental controls each do?
These are two different approaches: in-game filters reduce selected content within a supported title, while platform parental controls can limit access to games. An access restriction does not switch off gore or filter campaign dialogue in a game that is allowed.

| Approach | What it affects | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| In-game content settings | Selected effects or language, where the title provides controls | That game; availability varies by edition |
| Xbox rating-based parental controls | Whether a child account can access games within the chosen rating limits | Access on the child’s Xbox account, rather than specific dialogue or effects |
For Xbox, ESRB’s parental-control guide explains rating-based restrictions and refers to the Xbox Family Settings app. If you want both kinds of protection, set an available in-game filter for the particular title and separately choose an appropriate rating limit for the child’s Xbox account.
What is the rating for Gears of War?

| Gears 5 | Windows PC and Xbox | Mature 17+; Blood and Gore; Intense Violence; Strong Language |
| Gears of War: Reloaded | Windows PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series | Mature 17+; Blood and Gore; Intense Violence; Strong Language |
| Original Gears of War | Windows PC and Xbox 360/Xbox One | Mature 17+; Blood and Gore; Intense Violence; Strong Language |
The ratings are not lowered by changing a game’s settings. A content filter and a rating-based access restriction address different things: one reduces selected content in a supported game; the other manages whether the account can play it.

Can I block Gears of War for my child?
On Xbox, use the rating-based restrictions described in ESRB’s Xbox parental-control guide to manage which games a child can access. That is separate from any in-game filters available for a particular Gears title. A restriction on access does not change content in games the child is permitted to play.
