On Windows, adjust these settings in Settings > System > Display; on a Mac, use Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. If you have more than one screen connected, select the display you want to change first. The available controls depend on whether the screen is built in or external, and on the monitor, computer, and connection.
Adjust display settings in Windows
These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, though labels and available options can vary by device. Microsoft’s guides cover brightness, resolution and layout, and refresh rate.
Change brightness
- For a built-in screen, open Settings > System > Display and move the brightness slider. You can also open the taskbar’s quick settings and adjust the Brightness slider there.
- If the slider is missing for an external monitor, adjust brightness with the monitor’s physical buttons or on-screen menu.
Some supported PCs offer automatic brightness adjustment based on room lighting. Windows 11 devices may also provide content-adaptive brightness, which changes brightness based on what is shown on screen.
Change refresh rate
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- If multiple screens are connected, select the display you want to configure.
- Choose a refresh rate from the available list. The list is specific to the display and connection.
If a rate has an asterisk beside it, Microsoft indicates that it does not support the current resolution. Selecting it changes the resolution to achieve that refresh rate. Windows 11 may also offer Dynamic Refresh Rate on supported devices, balancing motion smoothness and battery life.

Change scaling or resolution
- Open Settings > System > Display and select the correct screen if needed.
- Under Scale & layout, choose a Scale option to change the size of text and apps.
- To change the pixel mode instead, choose a value under Display resolution.
Windows marks a recommended setting for scale and resolution in many configurations; use it as a starting point. Scaling changes interface size, while resolution changes the number of pixels used for the image. A resolution below the display’s native resolution can make text less sharp and may result in a small, centered, black-bordered, or stretched image. If expected options are missing or settings change unexpectedly, check for display-driver updates.
Adjust display settings on a Mac
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays.
- Select the display you want to configure, then use the controls macOS provides for brightness, resolution, or refresh rate.
- If a third-party external monitor setting is not available in macOS, use the monitor’s own menu.
The available controls depend on the Mac model and connected display. Apple warns that choosing an unsupported refresh rate can leave the screen black; check the display documentation before selecting a mode. See Apple’s guides to Displays settings on Mac and refresh rates on MacBook Pro or Apple displays.

Choose a refresh rate for your work
Apple documents fixed rates such as 120, 60, 59.94, 50, 48, and 47.95 Hz for certain MacBook Pro and Apple display models; compatible devices may also offer adaptive modes. These are model-specific examples, not options every Mac or display supports. For video work, Apple recommends a refresh rate that divides evenly into the content’s frame rate—for example, 48 Hz for 24-fps content.

Which setting should you choose?
- For readability: Adjust scaling to make text and apps comfortable to read. Keep the recommended resolution as a starting point if you want the display’s intended sharpness.
- For smoother motion: Choose the highest refresh rate listed that works reliably with your display, connection, and chosen resolution. Higher is not automatically better for every task.
- For battery life: On portable devices, a lower refresh rate can reduce display power use. Supported Windows 11 devices may offer Dynamic Refresh Rate to balance smoothness and battery life.
- For video playback or editing: On supported Mac models, consider matching refresh rate to the video frame rate as Apple describes; confirm that the desired rate is offered for your setup.
Brightness, scaling, resolution, and refresh rate solve different problems. Change one at a time so you can see whether the result improves comfort, sharpness, motion, or battery use without creating a compatibility issue.
