Open Facebook’s privacy settings
- Open the Facebook app and tap the menu or profile control. Its position and appearance may differ in the current iPhone or iPad app.
- Tap Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Find Audience and visibility and open the section relevant to the information or content you want to control. Facebook lists profile details, finding and contacting you, posts, stories, Pages, Reels, followers and public content, profile and tagging, and blocking among these areas. [Facebook Help Center]
If the labels do not match, use the settings search if it appears in your app, or look through the category names for the control you need. Do not assume that a setting for one type of content also controls another.
Choose who can see new posts and stories
Before sharing, check the audience selector for that post or story. Facebook lets you choose an audience for things you share; the selector for one content type should not be treated as a universal default for every other type. [Facebook Help Center]
Choose the narrowest audience that fits what you are sharing. Depending on the content and options offered, choices may include Public, friends, selected people, or only you. Check the selector each time if the audience matters, rather than relying on a remembered setting.

Review your profile and who can find you
Profile details and contact information
In Audience and visibility, review profile details and How people find and contact you. Check the visibility of the details you have added and the ways people can locate or contact your account. Available controls can differ by profile type. [Facebook Help Center]
Friends list
Facebook places the friends-list audience control under How people find and contact you. Narrowing the audience limits who can see the friends section on your profile, but it does not control what your friends choose to show on their profiles. Mutual friends may still be visible. Public profile information
Facebook describes profile and cover photos, featured photos, and feed updates about basic information changes as public profile information. Review the available controls for who can like or comment on that information if you want to limit interaction with it. [Facebook Help Center]
Control tagged posts and profile review
Tagged content has two separate audience considerations: the original poster’s audience and your setting for tagged posts. A setting on your account does not replace the original poster’s audience. Facebook also describes an option to add friends or other selected people to the audience when they otherwise could not see a post you are tagged in. The help page says this setting defaults to Friends, so inspect the current option in your account. [Facebook Help Center]

Open Profile and tagging in Audience and visibility to review the controls available for your profile and tagged content. Review these separately from the audience on posts you create yourself.
Set a separate audience for Reels
Facebook provides a default audience for future Reels and lets you change the audience of an individual Reel. Its help page lists Public, Friends, and Friends except… as available choices. Check the individual Reel before publishing, particularly if you are sharing across Instagram and Facebook. [Facebook Help Center]

Limit Facebook’s access to your device location
Facebook’s in-app audience controls do not grant or remove iOS access to your device location. To change the app’s location permission, open iOS Settings, then Privacy & Security, Location Services, and Facebook. Choose While Using the App, Ask Next Time, or Never, as available on your device. This controls Facebook’s app access to device location; it does not change the audience of a post or remove location information already shared. [Facebook Help Center]

Past posts and activity
To inspect information or content you have already shared, Facebook points users to Privacy Checkup, Activity Log, and Manage Activity. Use these to review past activity instead of assuming that changing a setting for future posts also changes what you have already shared. [Facebook Help Center]

Apps and websites
Under Apps and Websites, review connected apps and the permissions they have. If an app is allowed to publish on your behalf and you no longer want that, remove that permission or the app connection where the option is offered. Facebook’s in-app browser
If you use Facebook’s in-app browser, review its controls for browsing data and autofill. Clearing data there applies to that browser; it does not mean all activity on Facebook has been deleted. [Facebook Help Center]

- Audience: Decide how broad the audience should be for each item, from public to a smaller group where the control allows.
- Content type: Review posts, stories, Reels, profile details, and tagged posts independently.
- Who controls it: Some settings are yours; tagged-post reach can also depend on the original poster, friends control their own profile visibility, and iOS controls device location access.
- Scope: Distinguish settings for future sharing from controls on an existing post, app permission, or device permission.
