To use your own notification sound on a Samsung Galaxy, copy the audio file into the phone’s internal-storage Notifications folder, then choose it in Settings. You can set it as the default tone for notifications or, if the app exposes the control, assign it to an individual app’s notification category.
Put the audio file in the Notifications folder
The custom sound must be available in internal storage’s Notifications folder to appear in the notification-sound list. Samsung’s steps are similar across regions, though menu names and locations can vary by Galaxy model and software version.
- Open My Files and locate the audio file. Check Audio or browse to the folder where you saved it; a saved voice recording can also be used.
- Touch and hold the file, then tap Copy or Move. Choose Copy if you want to keep the original in its current location.
- Return to the My Files home screen and open Internal storage.
- Open the
Notificationsfolder. If it is not visible, change the folder filter from Essentials to All. If the folder does not exist, create a folder namedNotificationsin internal storage. - Tap Copy here or Move here, depending on the option you chose.
Samsung Australia’s August 2026 instructions demonstrate this workflow with an MP3. Samsung Japan also lists saved voice recordings and MP3, WAV, and AAC files as possible choices, but cautions that compatibility can vary by device and Android version. A listed format is not a guarantee that every file will work, and Samsung does not specify a universal maximum clip length. Samsung Japan’s guide was updated June 9, 2026; Samsung Australia’s guide was updated August 10, 2026.

After putting the file in the folder, open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Notification sounds. Select your custom sound, then go back to apply it. This changes the phone’s default notification tone rather than just one app’s sound. Samsung’s India instructions cover the system-wide setting and voice recordings: How to set a music file as a Notification Tone on my Samsung Phone.

Choose a sound for one app
To use a different tone for a particular app, open Settings > Apps, select the app, then tap Notifications. Choose the relevant notification category and tap Sound to select the custom file. Depending on the app and software, the category may be called General notifications or Notification categories; some apps or categories do not offer a sound control. See Samsung’s app-specific notification sound instructions.
If notification categories are missing
On Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or later, Samsung Japan says to check Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Manage notification categories for each app and turn it on if needed. This is version-scoped guidance, not a requirement for every Galaxy phone; labels and availability can differ by device and software.

If the custom sound does not appear or play
- Check the folder and filter: Confirm that the file is in internal storage’s
Notificationsfolder, not merely in Downloads or another location. In My Files, switch from Essentials to All if the folder is hidden. - Check the selected setting: The default tone is under Settings > Sounds and vibration > Notification sounds. An individual app’s tone is set through its notification category, where that option is available.
- Check Sound mode: If notifications are silent, open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Sound mode and select Sound. Samsung India specifically recommends checking this when notification sounds cannot be heard.
- Try another compatible file: Samsung lists MP3, WAV, and AAC, as well as saved voice recordings, but notes that some files may fail on certain devices or Android versions. The official guidance does not establish a single guaranteed format or duration for every Galaxy.
- Account for app limits: An app may use its own sound controls or may not let you assign a custom sound to a particular category.
Samsung’s support guidance is consistent on the folder-based workflow, but it warns that exact screen names and paths vary by model and software version. The cited pages cover Galaxy devices in India, the Caribbean, Japan, and Australia; use the closest labels available on your phone.
