The simplest way to add a website screenshot to Airtable is to create an Attachment field, capture or download an image, and upload it in the target record. For recurring or high-volume captures, use an automation or API workflow that gives Airtable a public, direct image URL. If a URL cannot be public, upload the image bytes through Airtable’s attachment-upload API from a secure backend.

Method 1: Upload one screenshot manually
- Open the Airtable base and table containing the record.
- Add a field, or edit an existing field, and choose Attachment. This field type stores files on a record.
- Capture the public webpage with your browser’s screenshot feature or download an existing image.
- Open the target record and click the attachment cell’s plus icon.
- Select the image and wait for the thumbnail to appear before leaving the record.
Airtable previews common image types including JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, WebP, and HEIC. Manual upload avoids API keys and is usually the safest choice when only a few records are involved.
Capture a page in your browser
For a visible page, use your browser’s built-in screenshot command or operating-system capture tool, then save the result as PNG or WebP. A browser capture reflects your current viewport unless you explicitly use a full-page option. Check the image before uploading: cookie notices, chat bubbles, and logged-in information may be included.
Method 2: Automatically capture a URL and write it to Airtable
An automated workflow has three parts: a screenshot service creates an image, a trigger decides when a record needs one, and an Airtable automation, scripting action, or external integration updates the Attachment field. The attachment value is an array containing an object with a url property.

Prepare the Airtable table
- Create an Attachment field named, for example,
Screenshot. - Add a URL field containing the page to capture, such as
Page URL. - Add a status, timestamp, or error field so the workflow can report completion.
- Configure the trigger as “when a record matches conditions,” with a condition such as
Screenshot is empty.
The completion condition matters. Writing an attachment changes the record; an update-triggered automation without a stop condition can repeatedly trigger itself.
Use a direct public image URL
Airtable’s server must be able to make an unauthenticated GET request to the URL. The response must be the image itself, not an HTML preview page. Do not use a URL that requires a password, cookie, signed session, special request header, or a short-lived access check. A request can return success while the attachment is later lost if Airtable’s server-side fetch fails.

Your automation or script should send a value shaped like this, replacing the URL with the direct image address:

Prevent processing race conditions
If a workflow starts while an earlier upload is still processing, Airtable can report Attachment URL is disallowed. Add a delay, check that the URL has reached its final state, or use a formula/status field that allows the next step only after processing is complete. A condition that requires Screenshot is empty also prevents unnecessary reruns.
Method 3: Upload image bytes through the API
Use direct upload when an image cannot be exposed at a public URL. Airtable’s documented direct attachment-upload route accepts base64 data. The Site-Shot implementation example uses fields named contentType, file, and filename, with a 5 MB ceiling; for larger images, the public-URL method is preferable.
- Fetch or generate the screenshot in a trusted backend.
- Convert the bytes to base64 and set the correct MIME type, such as
image/pngorimage/webp. - Send the filename and encoded file to Airtable’s attachment-upload endpoint using server-side authentication.
- Store the returned attachment metadata in the record and log failures without exposing the screenshot key.
This route keeps the screenshot-service secret away from Airtable URLs, but it does not make the resulting Airtable API download URL permanent.

Attachment size, storage, and link lifetime
- Airtable lists a 5 GB maximum for an individual attachment.
- Free bases include 1 GB of attachment storage, Team 20 GB, Business 100 GB, and Enterprise Scale 1,000 GB.
- API attachment-download URLs remain active for at least about two hours. They are not permanent public CDN links.
The file remains stored in the base after a download URL expires. Use Airtable’s viewer URL for collaborators who can sign in, or copy files to storage you control when a stable external URL is required.

Security and authenticated pages
A URL workflow gives Airtable’s fetcher access to the image URL. Use a non-sensitive, direct file URL and keep API keys in server-side environment variables. If the screenshot itself is sensitive, generate it privately and use direct byte upload instead. Screenshot services capture the logged-out view of pages behind a login; they do not automatically reproduce your authenticated browser session.

Troubleshooting
The attachment cell stays empty
Open the image URL in a private browser window. It must return the image without cookies, a password, a redirect to an access-check page, or a special header. Confirm the response is an image MIME type rather than HTML, and check that the URL has not expired.
“Attachment URL is disallowed”
The automation probably ran before the upload finished or the URL was not in an accepted final state. Add a delay, test the URL state, and gate the next step with a completion formula or status field.
The automation runs repeatedly
Use a trigger condition such as Screenshot is empty or a status that changes from “Queued” to “Done.” Do not trigger on every record update unless the script explicitly ignores completed records.

The page may require JavaScript, block automated browsers, or show a bot check. Use a capture service that reports verdicts, and treat bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, and failed loads as failures rather than valid attachments.

Manual uploads fail
Try a private browser window and another network. Temporarily check extensions, VPN and firewall rules, and allowlist Airtable’s attachment-upload domains where your organization’s network requires it.
The file is too large
Resize or recompress the image, select WebP when transparency is unnecessary, or use the public-URL method for files over the direct-upload example’s 5 MB ceiling. Monitor total base storage as your automation runs.
Recommended workflow by use case
- One or two screenshots: create an Attachment field and upload manually.
- A recurring content audit: trigger when the URL exists and Screenshot is empty, capture a clean image, then write its public URL and timestamp.
- Many URLs: run captures in batches, record success and failure status, and avoid firing duplicate jobs.
- Private source material: keep credentials on a backend and use direct byte upload or private storage.
- Durable public hosting: retain a copy in storage you control instead of relying on an expiring Airtable API download URL.

Can Airtable store a screenshot without an Attachment field?
