Keep your functional assertions: they verify behavior, while the screenshot assertion catches unintended changes in what the user sees. Playwright can create a reference image on its first run and compare later captures against it.
What visual testing adds to a functional test
A functional test can confirm that checkout completes, a heading appears, or a button works without noticing that the order summary has shifted, lost styling, or become unreadable. A visual assertion checks rendered appearance alongside those behavioral checks. Neither replaces the other: functional assertions explain what the interface should do; screenshot comparison detects changes in how a selected page or component looks.
Add a screenshot assertion to an existing Playwright test
Choose a state your test already reaches reliably—for example, after navigation and after the expected content has rendered. Use toHaveScreenshot() on the page for a broad check, or on a locator to limit the visual contract to one component.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('checkout summary looks correct', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/checkout');
// Keep behavioral checks: they verify the flow, not its appearance.
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Your order' })).toBeVisible();
await expect(page.locator('[data-testid="order-summary"]'))
.toHaveScreenshot('order-summary.png');
});
Replace the sample route, heading, and selector with your application’s. A locator screenshot is useful when the component is the intended contract and unrelated page regions change frequently. Use await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() when the whole page state matters. Playwright’s screenshot assertion can capture repeatedly while establishing a reference until two consecutive screenshots match, reducing the chance that a one-off unstable frame becomes the baseline. See the Playwright screenshot testing documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Create, inspect, and update reference images
- Run the test to establish its reference. On the initial run, Playwright generates the expected screenshot file associated with the assertion.
- Review the generated image before committing it. Treat it as a test artifact that defines expected appearance; check that it shows the intended state and does not include transient content or an accidental loading frame.
- Commit the baseline with the test. Keeping reference images under version control makes changes visible in the same review as the code.
- When a later run differs, inspect the diff before acting. Decide whether it represents a regression, a deliberate UI change, or rendering variation.
- For an intentional visual change, update and review the snapshots:
npx playwright test --update-snapshotsInspect the resulting files and commit them with the implementation change. Do not update every baseline simply to turn a failing test green; that can make a regression the new reference.
Stabilize the rendering and test state
Pixel comparisons are sensitive to more than application code. Playwright warns that host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering. Generate and compare baselines in the same environment; Playwright’s best-practices guidance also calls for matching operating system and browser versions for visual regression checks. See screenshot testing and Playwright best practices.
- Make the UI state deterministic. Use predictable test data and wait for the specific content the screenshot depends on rather than capturing during navigation or an incomplete render.
- Control dynamic regions narrowly. Playwright supports a custom stylesheet for suppressing volatile elements during capture. Hide only content that is irrelevant to the assertion; a broad mask can conceal a real layout or rendering regression.
- Tune tolerances with evidence. Options such as
maxDiffPixelscan allow known minor variation, but choose thresholds by reviewing representative diffs. A tolerance is not a substitute for understanding unexplained changes. - Read the diff as evidence, not a verdict. A pixel change might reflect a genuine layout, style, font, or asset change, an intentional redesign, or environmental variation. Determine which before changing code or the baseline.
Run visual checks reliably in CI
Use the same test and rendering environment in CI as the one used to create the baselines. Playwright’s CI guidance follows a practical sequence: install project packages, install browser binaries and their dependencies, then run the tests. A container can help keep rendering consistent across machines. Playwright recommends one worker by default in CI to prioritize stability; teams with suitable infrastructure can use sharding to broaden parallel execution. See Playwright’s CI guidance.

Review changed snapshots in the same code review as the UI change. If a check fails unexpectedly, use the screenshot diff and a trace to identify the page state and actions that led to the capture. Playwright recommends Trace Viewer for CI debugging and documents configuring traces on the first retry. See Trace Viewer and best practices.
Choose between Playwright snapshots and a hosted workflow
Playwright’s built-in assertion is a sensible starting point when you want checks in the existing runner and are comfortable reviewing and versioning reference images in the repository. Hosted products may suit teams that need a shared review interface or centralized baseline workflow; they are not required to use Playwright visual comparisons.
