Add visual regression testing by mounting a component in its Cypress component test, rendering a deterministic state, asserting that the state is ready, and then calling a visual-testing integration’s snapshot-and-compare command. Cypress can capture screenshots, but comparison with an approved baseline requires a plugin or service.
What visual testing adds to a component test
A functional test can pass while a component’s font, spacing, color, icon, or CSS layout has regressed. Visual testing captures the rendered component, compares that image with an approved baseline, and flags differences for review. Cypress puts it plainly: “Cypress does not perform image comparison itself.”
Component tests are a useful place for these checks because they mount a component independently rather than visiting the whole application. You can give it controlled props and data, render a specific state, and narrow the likely source of a visual difference. They complement broader application tests; they do not prove that every application layer works together.
Do not confuse a visual assertion with a failure screenshot. cy.screenshot() captures what is on screen, which can help diagnose a failed test, but does not compare the image with a baseline. The visual-testing workflow is capture, compare, and review: fix an unintended change or approve a deliberate one.

Choose a comparison integration
Start with your constraints rather than assuming one provider is best for every project. Cypress’s visual-testing guide, last updated September 20, 2026, describes the following choices. Setup details, Cypress compatibility, pricing, and terms can change, so check each vendor’s current documentation before adopting it.
| Approach | Examples listed by Cypress | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Self-managed plugins | Cypress Image Diff, Cypress Image Snapshot, Cypress Visual Regression, and Visual Regression Diff | Comparison and baseline files stay in your environment; your team owns baseline updates, diff review, and rendering consistency. Cypress describes these plugins as free. |
| Self-hostable visual review platform | Pixeleye | Consider whether a self-hosted review workflow fits your infrastructure and maintenance capacity. |
| Hosted services | Applitools Eyes; Argos; Chromatic; Happo; LambdaTest SmartUI; Percy from BrowserStack; Sauce Labs Visual; SmartBear VisualTest; Wopee.io | Services may manage baseline storage and approvals, provide review dashboards or pull-request integrations, and render across browsers or viewport widths. Weigh those benefits against subscription cost and provider-managed infrastructure. |
The Cypress guide characterizes these commercial integrations as follows: Applitools Eyes offers AI-assisted Visual AI and component and end-to-end support; Argos provides screenshots with CI and pull-request review; Chromatic captures a UI archive during Cypress tests, then renders and diffs it in its cloud; Happo supports full-page and component snapshots across browsers and sizes; LambdaTest SmartUI compares Cypress SDK captures across browsers and resolutions; Percy renders DOM snapshots across browsers and responsive widths with review and approval; Sauce Labs Visual has an official plugin, automatic baselines, region ignoring, and DOM capture; SmartBear VisualTest supports full-page, element, and multi-device captures; Wopee.io offers visual validation with platform-managed baselines. These are guide descriptions, not a substitute for checking current vendor documentation.

- Consider a hosted service if managed baselines, cross-browser rendering, or pull-request review better fits your workflow.
- Compare the rendering method—such as pixel comparison, cloud rendering, or AI-assisted comparison—along with browser and responsive viewport coverage.
- Check how the integration fits your CI and pull-request process, and compare subscription costs with the internal work of maintaining a local system.
Add the visual assertion to a component test
The exact install command and snapshot API depend on the integration you choose. Follow its current Cypress component-testing setup instructions rather than assuming that a command from one provider works with another. The shared test shape is:
- Set up the integration. Install and configure the chosen plugin or service according to its current documentation, including any baseline storage or CI settings it requires.
- Mount the component. Use your project’s existing Cypress component-test setup and import the component and required fixture data.
- Render a meaningful, deterministic state. Supply fixed props and data, and control any network response or time-dependent behavior that affects what appears.
- Assert readiness. Use a normal Cypress assertion to confirm that the intended state is visible before capturing it.
- Capture and compare. Call the integration’s documented snapshot command. On an initial run, the tool may require you to create or review a baseline before later comparisons can detect changes.
- Review differences. Inspect the expected and current images, including the highlighted diff. Fix unintended UI changes; approve a new baseline only when the visual change is intentional.
For example, the structure below shows where the steps belong; cy.visualSnapshot() is illustrative, not a universal Cypress or provider command. Replace it with the command documented by your integration.

import { mount } from 'cypress/react';
import StatusCard from './StatusCard';
describe('StatusCard visual states', () => {
it('renders the completed state', () => {
mount(<StatusCard status="complete" label="Payment received" />);
cy.contains('Payment received').should('be.visible');
cy.visualSnapshot('StatusCard — complete'); // Replace with your provider's command
});
});
The import path and mount syntax can differ with your framework and Cypress component-test configuration. The important sequence is mount, establish the state, assert it is ready, then invoke the integration-specific comparison command.
Make snapshots stable and useful
Wait for the final state
A snapshot records whatever is visible at capture time. Assert that the expected UI has appeared and that data loading is complete; otherwise, the baseline may capture an intermediate render. Finish or disable CSS transitions and animations when they make captures inconsistent. Cypress notes that action-command animation settings do not prevent a screenshot from catching an animation elsewhere on the page.

Control inputs and rendering conditions
- Use fixtures and
cy.intercept()to make API data repeatable. Usecy.clock()when dates, times, or countdowns affect the component. - Set a fixed viewport. Keep baseline generation and comparison in the same environment where possible, and pin browser versions when practical.
- Remember that operating system, browser, display scaling, and fonts can create pixel differences even if the application code is unchanged. A cloud service may standardize its rendering environment, but check how that service renders your tests.
- Mask only small, uncontrollable regions, such as third-party widgets, rather than loosening the tolerance for the whole image.
Capture the right visual contract
Choose meaningful shared components and states rather than snapshotting every test. An element-level capture is a natural fit when the component owns the visual contract; use a full-page capture when page layout is what you need to protect. Image equality also cannot establish whether text meets a defined color-contrast standard, so pair visual checks with accessibility testing.

If your goal is to capture a site image through an API rather than compare a Cypress-mounted component against a baseline, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is not a Cypress visual-regression assertion: use a Cypress-compatible integration for component baselines and review. For a standalone page capture, one GET request returns an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options.

Troubleshooting visual-test failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Diff shows a loading state or incomplete content | The capture ran before rendering or data loading finished. | Assert on the expected visible state and wait for controlled network data before calling the snapshot command. |
| Images differ across runs without an intended UI change | Animation, time-dependent content, variable API data, fonts, browser versions, or rendering environment may be changing. | Control time and data, finish or disable transitions, fix the viewport, and align the baseline and comparison environments. |
| A provider command is undefined or the test fails during setup | The integration may not be installed or configured, or the example command may not match that provider. | Use the provider’s current Cypress component-test instructions and its documented command; verify compatibility with your Cypress version. |
| A large image diff comes from a small third-party area | A widget or other uncontrollable region changed independently. | Mask only the small unstable region rather than widening tolerance for the full capture. |
| The snapshot passes but text is difficult to read | Image comparison checks rendered differences, not compliance with an accessibility contrast criterion. | Add accessibility checks alongside visual regression tests. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Cypress compare screenshots automatically?
No. Cypress captures screenshots, but a plugin or service must provide image comparison and baseline review.
Can component visual tests replace end-to-end tests?
No. They check targeted component rendering and complement tests that cover the wider application.
